    Laboratory Exercise #19

    Web-based email and chat 

    Objectives:

     At the end of the exercise, the students should be able to:

      create, read, and delete messages using web-based e-mail,

      chat via Windows Live messenger,  chat via Yahoo! Messenger,  use emoticons in chatting, and

      send private messages.

    Materials:

      1 PC with pre-installed Microsoft Windows operating system, Internet Explorer 8 and WindowsLive 8.5 and Yahoo! 11 messenger

    Procedures:

    Activity 1 Register to a Web-Based E-Mail Provider  

    1. Access www.yahoo.com.ph .

    2. Click the Sign Up hyperlink.

    3. Yahoo! Registration page will appear. Fill in the necessary information needed to get a Yahoo! ID

    and password.

    Note:

    In some cases, you will need to re-enter new certain fields (e.g. entering new user name becauseit was already been taken).

    Tip:You may choose from the suggested e-mail addresses.

    4. After the fields are filled up correctly, click the Create My Account button.5. A window displaying your new Yahoo! ID and e-mail address with the important details will appear

    on the screen. Click the Continue  button.

    6. You will be directed to the Yahoo! Home Page .

    Composing an E-Mail Message

    1. Click the Mail button2. Click the Compose Message button.

    3. On the To:  field, enter the Yahoo! e-mail address of the person on your right.4. On the Cc:  field, enter another Yahoo! e-mail address of any of your friends inside the computer

    laboratory.5. Click Add Bcc hyperlink and enter the Yahoo! e-mail address of your instructor.

    6. Type Birthday Invitation in the Subject: field.7. Key in the following text in the Message text box:

    Hi! 

    I would like to invite you for an afternoon tea party in celebration of my 18th Birthday on

    July 16, 2010. This would be held at No.15 Mayumi St., Q.C. I hope to see you there!

    8. Click the Send  button. The Message Sent window will appear on the screen confirming that themessage has been sent successfully.

    Adding Names to Address Book

    1. E-mail provider like Yahoo! suggests that an e-mail address be added to your address book if not

    found. Do this by clicking the plus (+) sign beside the recipients you want to add, enter thenecessary information (i.e. First and Last Name), and click Save.

    Tip:

    Tick Au tomatical ly add new recipients to my Contacts (from now o n)   option to automatically

    add recipients that are not found in your Contacts.

    Reading E-Mail Messages

    1. Click the Inbox folder.

    Note:The number displayed beside the Inbox folder name represents the number of unread messagesin the Inbox folder.

    2. Select the subject of the message to be read, in this case, click the Welcome to Yahoo! subject.

    3. The e-mail message preview sent by Yahoo! is now displayed on the screen using a bottomreading pane.

    Replying and Forwarding E-Mail Messages

    1. Open the message sent by your friend with a subject, Birthday Invitation.

    2. Click the Reply button.

    Note:

    The e-mail address of the sender is automatically entered in the To: field and a note Re: isincluded in the Subject field.

    3. In the Message text box, key in:

    Hi!

    Thanks for the invite. It is my pleasure to be part of your celebration. Advanced HappyBirthday!

    4. Yahoo! allows you to customize the messages by using the formatting tools (font face, size, style,

    color, etc.) in the toolbar. Highlight the message and change the Font Face by choosing from itsdrop-down list box.

    5. Click the Set text color  button and select any color from the list.

    6. Click the Send button.

    7. Click Done.

    8. In the Inbox folder, reopen the message with the subject, Birthday Invitation.9. This time, click the Forward button.

    Note:

     A note Fw: is included in the Subject field.

    10. In the To: field, enter the e-mail addresses of any of your friends inside the computer laboratory.11. Click the Send button to forward the message.

    Deleting E-Mail Messages

    1. Return to the Inbox folder and select the message sent by Yahoo! by ticking on the check boxbeside the message to be deleted.

    2. Click the Delete button.

    Note:

    The deleted message is automatically moved to the Trash folder.

    Activity 2 Chatting via Windows Live Messenger

    1. From the Start  button, click on All Programs, hover over to Windows Live, and chooseWindows Live Messenger . The Windows Live Messenger   screen appears similarly to Figure19.10.

    2. Click the Sign up for a Windows Live ID hyperlink. The Internet Explorer  will display directingyou to Windows Live Sign Up page.

    3. Click Or get a Windows Live e-mail address hyperlink from the page to get a new Windows Livee-mail address and ID. Enter the necessary information. When done, read the Microsoft service

    agreement and privacy statement and click I accept button.

    Note:

    I f you don’t have any other e-mail address that you can use for the password reset, click Or

    cho ose a secur ity qu estion for passwo rd reset   hyperlink to enable the security question.

    4. Close the Internet Explorer  window and access the Windows Live messenger log in screen.5. Enter your new e-mail address and password and click Sign in button.

    Note:

    Close the Welcome screen of Windows Live Messenger.

    6. Once signed in, click Add a contact button.7. Add the e-mail addresses of your classmates on your left and right and group them as your

    Coworkers. Enter all necessary information on the Add a Contact  dialog box. Click Add

    Contact.

    Note:

    Uncheck the Subscribe to upd ates for this contact   option.

    8. Add another contact of any of your friends inside the computer laboratory and group him as yourFriends.

    Note:

    The e-mail addresses you have added are now listed on the main screen of Windows LiveMessenger. Those contacts that are in green mode indicate that the users are online. While those

    that are in gray mode indicate the users are offline.

    9. In order to send a message, double-click on the user ID you want to send a message.10. From the Conversation Window , key in Hello!  in the message input text box and click the Send 

    button.

    Note:

    The sent message appears in the message pane.

    Info:

    There are many options in communicating using Windows Messenger. Aside from the usual text

    messaging, you can also use the web camera and microphone for the video or voice chat.

    11. Click the Invite someone to this conversation button from the Conversation Window to create a

    conference.

    12. Select another contact from the results list of the Click on contact to select it dialog box and clickOK.

    13. Click the Change your font or text color  button to display the Change Font dialog box. Choose

    Trebuchet MS  from the Font  list box, change the text color based on your preferences, and thenclick OK.

    15. Click the Select an emoticon drop-down button and choose the Angel. Click Send.

    16. Close the Conversation Window  by clicking the Close button or pressing the  key.

    Activity 3 Using Yahoo! Messenger

    1. From the Start  button, click on All Programs, hover over to  Yahoo! Messenger , and choose Yahoo! Messenger . The Yahoo! Messenger  screen appears similar to Figure 19.20.

    2. Use your created e-mail address account and password from this Laboratory Exercise  for the Yahoo! ID and Password  fields.

    3. Click the Sign In button.

    4. Close the Yahoo! Insider  window once it appears on the screen.

    Adding Friends to your Yahoo! List

    1. Access the Contact menu and click on the Add a Contact. The Add to Messenger List  dialogbox will be displayed on the screen.

    2. Enter a  Yahoo! ID  or e-mail address as shown in Figure 19.22. In this exercise, enter the

     Yahoo! ID of your classmate on your left. Click Next.

    3. Key in Classmates  on the Choose or enter a Messenger List group for [Contact name]  textbox.

    4. Key in Hello! in the Brief Introduction  text box. Click Next.

    5. Now, click Add another contact  hyperlink because you will add two more contacts on Yahoo!messenger. Enter the  Yahoo! ID  of your classmate on your right and any of your friends insidethe computer laboratory. Select Classmates  group for your other classmate and Friends  group

    for your friend in the computer laboratory.6. When done, click Finish to close the dialog box.7. Locate the  Yahoo! ID  of your classmate on your left. Right-click on the ID and choose Contacts

    Details option.

    8. Fill in the fields for your classmate’s contact details. When done, click the Save & Close button.

    9. Your classmate’s Yahoo! ID will be displayed under the group Classmates  on your Yahoo!Messenger window.

    Notes:

      If you have been added by any of your classmates and friends, the Add to M essengerLi st Request   window will appear on the screen. Select Al low this person to add me

    and see me when I am online   option and tick on And add this person to my

    Messenger List   option. Click Next . Add them to the Classmates   group and click Finish .  Modify the other two contacts on your list for their contact details.

    Sending a Message

    1. Double-click a  Yahoo! ID  of your friend under the group Classmates. A Conversation Window will appear on the screen.

    2. On the Message Input text box, key in any message you want to convey.

    3. Click on the Emoticons  button and select the big grin smiley.

    4. Click the Send button or press the   key.

    5. If your classmate is not replying to your message, click Buzz button from the ConversationWindow toolbar.

    6. On the Messenger   window, right-click on Classmates  and select Broadcast an IM to thisGroup.

    7. Key in any message you want, then click Send or press .

    Editing Text Color, Fonts, and Instant Messenger Window

    1. Click the Format button to display the Format toolbar.2. Click the Change Text Color  button and select any color you prefer.3. Begin typing a message to your friend to view the changes made.

    Tip:

    You can change the color of the text or add some color effects.

    Editing Groups

    1. Right-click the Classmates  group, then click on Rename Group.2. On the New Group Name   text box of the Rename Group  dialog box, enter Computer

    Laboratory Students.

    3. Click OK.

    Tip:

    To add new friends on your group, right-click on the group and then select Add a Contact toGroup  option. 

    Signing Out

    1. To sign out from Yahoo! Messenger, from the Messenger  menu, select Sign Out  or press .2. A message box will appear asking you if you really want to sign out from Yahoo! messenger. Click

     Yes.

    3. Finally, click the Close button.
