• First suspected in the Mississippi River Valley

• This is isolates of heartworms which receive routine prophylaxis

• Increased use of drug does not increase resistance

• Several different species of gram negative obligate intracellular bacteria

• Affects many different types of cells: platelets, RBC’s, monocytes

• Transmitted by multiple tick vectors

• May go undetected or result in severe clinical signs

EHRLICHIA

• Ehrlichia canis most common in dogs

• Ehrlichia chaffeensis and E. Ewingi affect humans and dogs

Doxycycline orally for 21 days

Imidocarb intramuscular injections every 2 weeks

Several different species

Transmitted by the Brown dog tick

Clinical signs include fever, anorexia, enlarged lymphnodes, bleeding disorders.

Some dogs are subclinical carriers

Lyme disease

Rocky mountain spotted fever

Anaplasmosis

Gram negative bacteria reside within erythrocytes and endothelial cells

Transmitted by ticks, fleas, lice and biting flies

Affects 30% of cats

Causes cat scratch disease in humans
