Commodore’s Log Commodore Page is out cruising and having a great time this month. We will hear from him next month.

    Page Proffitt / Commodore

House I am still gathering quotes and input on our 2013 project list from our committee, in addition to general club maintenance. We will start scheduling small projects soon and sub-committee meetings to ad-dress the biggies and provide numbers for the 10-year plan that Treasurer Eric Stord is spearheading.

Our committee also updated the “Club Usage” policy and forms and they will be in the new di-rectory as well as on the website. No policy changes, just updates to bring the written documents in-line with what we are actually doing.

Thanks for making notes on the clip board in the kitchen to let me know when something needs attention or repair.

Lynde Edwards / Vice Commodore / House

Grog Locker We introduced a new House Wine, “Foxhorn Shiraz”, $2.50 a glass. Drink Specials of the Month: “Sailors Coconut Rum Slurpee”, and “Mt. Gay Black Bar-rel Rum” (310th Anniversary), $3 each. Wednesday lunches have been at a standstill for April. We had some members interested in preparing a lunch, but not sure how to go about it. If you think you might be interested in helping with a lunch, there will be a meeting Tuesday, May 14th @ 6pm here at MYC. I’d like to thank Jack and Jacki Leahy for the delicious “Shrimp and Chicken Alfredo”, they prepared for the Small Boat Dine In, and Jeff and Debbie McGregor for the scrumptious “Taco Bar” for Big Boat TGIF. Thanks to Mel and Mary Ford, our Bartenders for the May General Meeting. The Bartenders for June’s Gen-eral Meeting will be Doug and Pamela Worth. Remember, hotdogs are available every TGIF and Sunday. The Bar will start Burn-Its every 2nd Friday with the Birthdays, and a Dine In on the 4th Friday of the month. A flier will be sent out to remind you. I’d like to thank our Bartenders Melanie, Chris and Kathy; you make MYC a special place to be with Family and Friends.

The Bar took in $2998 in chit and Non-member sales.

The Bar took in $4,289 in chit sales (Commodore’s Ball and Low Country Boil), plus lunches and food, for a $4,623 total.

Fleet April was a busy month. Lynde warned me about that! The Spring Regatta weather was great for both Small Boat and Big Boat, although some would have liked a little more wind for the small boats. There was plenty of racing

for everyone and MYC hosted two great parties, thanks to Commodore Page Proffitt and Dean White. The Sunfish held their Regional Regatta in conjunction with ours. Dick Tilman was first overall and Dave Silverman was third. For the Big Boat, we had more wind to make the racing more challenging. This year the J-24 fleet was the dominated by Paul Anstey on Apache. Dick Tilman and Chris Gates were second and third. In PHRF A, the winds favored Airbourne but Jerry Ross and Phil Scalise put in a good showing. For PHRF B, Dave Nesbitt scored bullets in every race. Jack Clark, on Caribe, had all second place finishes. A special thanks to our PROs, PC Jim Henry and PC Pat Lambert, for their excellent work. Finally, MYC/PCYC hosted an ocean race from Port Canaveral. After two days of racing Phil Scalise’s San-tarella pulled out the win followed closely by Dave Nesbitt on Epic. Phil Spletter on Shifting Gears and Dean & Patti White on Jazz were second and third. The first day started off with light winds and then the wind dropped to zero. Not many folks enjoyed bobbing around in the ocean waiting for the wind to pick up. Several people were seen leaning over the rail looking for some wind or something to keep the boat from aimlessly drifting in the rollers. Since both races were reverse handicapped, the later starting boats could not even see the boats that started first.

From John Martin: Commodore Page & Claudia Proffitt and Gail Oliver & John Martin are anchored near Marathon. Jack Clark and his brother-in-law Jack are holed up at Gilberts avoiding severe weather. They sailed thru huge storms when they left Miami. We saw storms around us today but managed to only get rained on.

From Mike Henry: We had a fantastic time, beautiful weather, with only a brief light rain on Saturday. Otherwise great tempera-tures and fine cruising. Gathering in Vero Beach the cruisers enjoyed early afternoon cocktails, specialty drinks (Lunchboxes) and snacks aboard Sea Owl. We had a total of 11 cruisers dingy in for a delicious dinner at the Riverside Café on Saturday night. Beautiful cool evening, full moon, no bugs, and great sleeping weather. Sun-day morning the gang gathered on aft deck and sun deck where they enjoyed a fine breakfast prepared by the hosts, Paty & Mike Henry with much help from the rest of the crew. We then savored the fine weather just re-laxing, messing about on boats and swapping boating adventures for the rest of the morning. Departed VB around 1:00 PM enjoying a nice cruise home. Participating cruisers were Mike & Paty Henry, Mike & Dee Wil-son, John & Judy Drawe, and Rachelle Ross aboard Sea Owl, Chris & Sue Reynolds aboard Dreadnought, and Paul Lindenberg & Carol Mairs aboard Forever. We all declared that a great time was had by all. Sorry you could not join us.

In May and June we continue the Dragon Point races. These races are for the racers as well as cruisers. If you want to give the cruising class a try, let me know.

    Tom Knowlton / Fleet

Tabs and Box Tops Challenge The Entertainment Committee of MYC is challenging the membership to fill, fill, and keep on filling the containers which have been placed in the bar area.

Entertainment Our May “Birthday Celebration” was held on May 10th at TGIF with a selection of pies.

The Seafood Raft Up will be held on Saturday night May 25th. Please RSVP for res-ervations to Gail Oliver via e-mail [email protected] or sign up at the bar. Con-tact PC Del Wiese via e-mail [email protected] or call (321) 773-4884 to volunteer. So that no one has to do too much, we need the following volunteers for preparation of the raft up food. Following are some details of the assignments:

Cocktail Sauce – Last year we offered only medium hot. This year in addition to medium, we’d like to offer “more” hot and “less” hot. This person will figure out how to make this happen.

Cole Slaw/Potato Salad/crackers – I will define quantities; this person will buy and bring to the club.

Dessert- This person will define what to buy and buy it. I will define the budget.

Containers/Packaging, includes utensils/napkins – This person will make sure we have the right containers and miscellaneous item on hand. I will define the sizes of containers needed.

Seafood – I will take care of defining and buying the seafood.

Reservations/meal checks (for Jan to bill) – Gail has volunteered to take care of this one.

Preparation help – need two people to come to the club the afternoon of 25 May to help with food preparation.

There will be a meeting for Tuesday 7 May at 6 pm at the MYC club house for volunteer planning for the Sea-food Raft Up. If you have any interest, please attend. Attendance is not a commitment, we will ask for commit-ments once people understand what they are committing to do.

Dock Notes April was a quiet month on the docks. The following is the month’s list of activities:

    1. I am planning a dock committee meeting for mid-May.

    2. There has been some movement of slip assignments. Kiane has relinquished her slip and Fine Finish has requested a deeper slip.

    3. Grant Ball and Al Waschka built a galvanic tester and checked out the West dock from Nice Pear to Fair Winds. They found no power problems and have concluded the wiring on the West dock is in good shape. The problem with MAJJAK II’s zinc has been attributed to a bad zinc.

    4. I have started measuring the dock planks to determine the number of board feet necessary to re-deck the docks.

    5. I have identified a list of ten potential derelict boats to discuss with the Dock Committee before mailing let-ters to their owners.

    6. I am reviewing the Dock Bylaws/Rules/Policies.

Once these changes have been identified and the modified text written, I plan to hold a Slip renter’s meeting to discuss them.

    7. I want to thank Jack Bibb for reattaching the Dinghy Dock rub-rail for a second time, replacing the poor choice of screws that I provided him for the first attempt.

Membership At the May Membership meeting we accepted two new couples as members. They are Jim & Carol Roulston and George Nippell & Nancy Martin. Please welcome them. Also, please welcome our new provisional members Joe & Shirley Jung who will be voted upon for membership at our June meeting. Please read their bio:

“Shirley and I are retired; I from a variety of State and Federal Government jobs and Shirley from the Rochester Public Schools. We purchased our home in Melbourne in May 2010. We spend some portion of the summer at our former home in Canandaigua, New York where we are members of the Canandaigua Yacht Club. CYC is open from April to October. We attend the social functions and have served on the Committee Boat for Sunday morning races. I raced my Catalina on Wednesday evenings. I sold my boat last September.

As a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, I am an instructor of the American Boater Safety Course, a Crew Member and a Vessel Examiner.

In addition to sailing and reading, Shirley and I engage in shooting sports, enjoy performances of the Brevard Symphony Orchestra, shows at the King Center and other Brevard venues. My retirement hobby is archeology. I have traveled to Israel and Jordan several times on archeological digs.

Shirley and I have attended TGIF at Melbourne Yacht Club on March 23 and April 12. I have always felt a de-gree of camaraderie at the yacht club.”

Other membership news is that Diane Gabik has changed her membership status from Resident to Non Resi-dent upon her move back to New Orleans.

Also Charles & Vera Kiessling have resigned their membership due to Charles’ failing eyesight which is re-stricting his activities.

The by-law changes pertaining to Membership were approved at the May meeting. Now that they have been approved, the Membership Committee members will start going to the human resources departments of local companies with a MYC packet containing the MYC brochure, a cover letter explaining the membership applica-tion process as stated in the by-laws and membership applications, as well as other materials pertaining to the club such as Sailing Class brochures. If the Junior Resident category of membership works as intended, we will be able to attract some young professionals.

As stated elsewhere in the newsletter, there will be a Memorial Service for Ty Harris here at the yacht club on May 18th at 11:00 AM.

A huge thank you goes out to Wendy & Bob Hughes. They took upon themselves the job of updating the data-base. As you know Wendy has called all of you to update and verify your information. And Bob has entered all the data and made sure all the data is entered in a uniform manner. This took them at probably a minimum of 80 hours. Wendy and Bob, we can’t thank you enough!

All is well with membership and will hopefully get even better with our new ‘Junior Resident’ category.

    Currently membership stands at:

    Resident: 157 Non Resident: 20 Corinthian: 11 Honorary: 12 Total: 200

    Jim Lacy / Membership Director

If tin whistles are made out of tin, what are fog horns made of? If swimming is good for your shape, then why do whales look that way? If white wine goes with fish, shouldn't white grapes go with sushi? Some Navy rockets go into space, which we all know is a big vacuum. So tell me, who changes the bag? Speaking of space, if athletes get athlete's foot does that mean astronauts get mistletoe?

Sailing Education The adult sailing classes start May 9th. I have eight officially registered students with several phone calls to interested parties so I believe we will at least be close to filling all 12 slots. I have the new sailing books in hand and am working on updating the class syllabus to reflect the new book. I also bought a couple of reference books to support the adult classes, the youth classes, and upcoming seminars.

I don’t currently have any youth officially registered but have had many conversations with parents of prospec-tive students. The Youth Class starts July 13th. Craig Rastello (the youth instructor) and I have been in discus-sions about the youth class. The Fall Adult Class starts Sept. 5th.

I am still working on volunteers for the classes. For the first adult class I need one more keel boat (preferably a J-24) and a couple more instructor volunteers. For the remaining classes, I am looking for volunteers to help rig and launch the boats for every class. I will also be looking for volunteers for a couple of classes to get in the boats with the adult students.

I am putting the final touches on a Race Committee Cheat Sheet. I envision that the cheat sheet will help those learning to do RC, especially those learning through doing on the Small Boat Sundays. They will be laminated and will appear in the Key Largo and the annex.

We, also, voted on the bylaw change that was mentioned at the meeting last month; posted in the Tell-Tale and on the MYC website; and discussed at this month’s meeting. The basis of the change was to align the bylaws to the current activities of the club. The vote passed to accept the change to Article 7, Section 8 to read:

The Sailing Education Committee shall be responsible not only for the operation of adult and youth sailing education but also maintenance of the fleet of small boats owned by the Club and used to conduct the sailing classes. It shall also be responsible for any budgets necessary to conduct these activities. This Committee shall consist of a member of the Board of Directors (the Sailing Education Director), who shall be the chairman and at least two other members.

Suzanne Dunphy / Youth & Sailing Education Director

“And on the eighth day God created roller furling, and He saw that it was good." So be-gins the Book of Jib, a little known book in the Bible, in which God cast His gaze down from the heavens and beheld the labors of the many sailors as they raised and lowered

and, with great difficulty, flaked their headsails, always in a grassy area which was supposed to be free of the droppings left by the dogs of Hell but never was found to be so. "God then took pity on the humble workers of the foredeck and inspired His prophets Harken, Schaefer, Hood, and Profurl." To these He gave insight so that they might develop a device that would lessen the burden. For many years did the men of the sea rejoice at their newfound inno-vation. But soon they forgot that the miracle of roller furling was a gift from God and instead began to believe it of their own making. They added automatic motors, and applied it to the mainsail as well, which constituted a breech of ancient law, the manual hoisting and lowering of the mainsail being a sacrament. They furled sails hither and yon, inside the mast or the boom, trying to hide the shameful practice from the eyes of God. God, being then displeased with the arrogance of man, jammed the furling units, leaving the sails exposed to the gales, which tore at them and made the sailors cry and gnash their teeth. The sailors brought down their tattered rags from aloft, and with heads hung low did take them to

the sail maker, whose prices soared higher than the stars in the firmament. And with a mighty shout their checking accounts were laid to waste. The sailors did then beseech redemption. "From this day forward we shall flake our mainsails and mizzens about the boom like men!" And God saw that it was good.
