    HAL copt ers play lead role in Uttarakhand ops

    The recent Uttarakhand flood relief operations put the helicopters produced by defence PSU, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.(HAL), the Dhruv, Cheetah and Chetak under severe, real-time test. And they have proved their worth by playing out their rolesimpeccably in what can be called as one of India's biggest helicopter based rescue ops by the Indian defence forces.

    According to a HAL communiqu, the copters performed effectively in dropping paratroopers, evacuating stranded people andsupply of food and medicines. They made hundreds of sorties in high risk zone overcoming strong winds, visibility and withvirtually no space for landing on high terrains. HAL teams were positioned at Deharadun and Delhi to ensure logistic support forthe rescue operations.

    Dhruv which can ferry 16 passengers clocked over 630 flying hours to become the star performer. On many occasions,incessant rains could be taken on only by Dhruv as it was unsafe for other copters to land. The Cheetah and Chetak clocked in520 flying hours.

    The release quotes Dr. R K Tyagi, Chairman, HAL "The indigenized helicopters pressed into service by the Army and the AirForce in flood-hit areas have proved their mettle in carrying out rescue and relief operations in highly inaccessible areas. We areproud of it".

    BHEL provides vending carts and wheel chairs

    The Bangalore based Industrial Systems Group (ISG), of PSU major, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL), as part of itsCorporate Social Responsibility (CSR) provided vending carts to the economically poor and wheel chairs to the physicallychallenged. The beneficiaries received them from Atul Sobti, ED at an event organized jointly by BHEL and the programmeimplementing NGO, Dr. B R Ambedkar Kreeda Club. The occasion was attended by GMs and other senior BHEL officials.

    The PSU recently contributed Rs. 2 crores to the CM's Relief Fund and its employees contributed over Rs.6.50 crores as aid

    to the victims in flood-ravaged areas of Uttarakhand.

    Bicycles to be used inside RWF facto ry pr emises

    Stepping towards a greener environment, the Rail Wheel Factory (RWF) has implemented the use of bicycles to commutewithin its factory premises in Yelahanka. Rajeev Bhargava, GM, RWF commissioned the bicycles purchased for common use byemployees. Shelters for parking these bicycles have been constructed at strategic locations inside the plant.

    According to a RWF release, this move not just helps employees in their physical fitness but also enable them to move quicklywith- which sprawls in the factory area, across 190 acres.
