campus safe!VI. Public Forum One:

a. Traditions Night – McKinlaye Harkavyi. McKinlaye Harkavy – Director of New Student Orientation

ii. Looking at revamping Traditions Night very significantlyiii. Hosting focus groups on Traditions Nightiv. WSGA is the last group to give feedback

1. Be honest!v. Have you attended traditions night? Why or why not?

1. Lasher: “I went freshmen year, but I did not go my sophomore or junior year. I thought it was boring. You’re supposed to learn the fight song but honestly I still don’t know it.”

2. Pine: “I went my freshmen year. I was disappointed because it got a lot more hype than it really should have had. I didn’t go my sophomore year. It’s a great idea but there needs to be more added.”

3. Toothaker: “I went last year as a cheerleader. I didn’t go this year because it felt more like a freshmen year thing.”

4. Trautman: “It’s during welcome week right?”a. Yes!!!

5. Martinez: “I felt like there were no traditions learned at Washburn University!”

vi. When you think of traditions on Washburn’s campus?1. Weinkauf: “Wulf Pack!”2. Soliday: “Can Emporia, Homecoming, Success Week. We don’t

really advertise this during traditions night.”3. Simmons: “If you walk on the crest in the union, then you don’t

graduate in four years!”4. Fluke: “Hype up the rivalry with Emporia more! Nobody here is

super against Emporia here but KU hates KSU! There should be a #BeatEmporia shirt”

5. McPherson: “Christmas lights on the bell tower! I always enjoy that.”

6. Shields: “Half of the students at Washburn don’t even know the Alma Mater…”

7. Nunez: “We don’t really know what tradition is on campus. We can’t dictate tradition because we aren’t a very big campus. Everything changes each year.”

8. Fluke: “It should be in Lee Arena!” vii. When you think of traditions that we don’t have, what would be traditions

that we could have?1. Pine: “Decorate the Ichabod in streamers and rush into the stadium

as a group into the Bod Squad!”2. Trautman: “Pitt State, students ring the bell when they first get

there, and before they leave as a senior, they ring it again. We also need traditions about sports as well. You don’t see a lot of students at athletic events but it would be cool to see more students involved.”

3. Fennell: “My family came to the football game on family day. It always seems like the alumni is having more fun than the students here. I wish we would bring more of that to campus. Sports in general, we just don’t have a big student section or school pride at all.”

4. Wade: “WU itself doesn’t have a huge tradition itself, but departments have their own traditions.”

5. Soliday: “I like the idea of having the chants and hearing the personal volleyball chants or soccer chants. Football team could do a scrimmage. KU does a 3 on 3 basketball scrimmage (Athletes vs. Non Athletes) You can teach your chants through these scrimmages.”

6. King: “Give everyone different color bracelets and randomly give out prizes when people are waiting.”

7. Nunez: “Form a committee for this. Alumni from 8 years+ ago could think of one or two things that would be more traditional than anything we could come up with since we have only mainly been here for 2-3 years.”

8. Weinkauf: “Get the Ichabod more violent like Willie the Wildcat!”9. McPherson: “I feel like everyone has that ‘other’ team they root

for besides the Ichabods. We should have more Ichabod pride. What can we do to make people like the ichabods more than any other school? People wear other college shirts on campus all the time.”

viii. Typically in the past, there has been a focus on athletics. Do we need to expand that and make it more of a pep rally for athletics or should we focus on different things other than just athletics?

1. Mulanax: “I thought we did a good job of that this year. When we announced WU Stock at Traditions Night, it got people super excited. I think if we have something exciting like that outside of athletics, it would get more people interested. Athletics and Student Orgs are the two main cores of Washburn and if we get rid of one, then we lose people.”

2. Helget: “I’ve seen this on other campuses, but they play a big game of assassins. People compete against each other. Each hall would compete against eachother and each org.”

3. Thew: “If you want to draw more students in, expand it! But don’t expand it too much so that it is too much to handle.”

4. Martinez: “Athletes feel just as awkward as we do when they just walk across and hear the coaches say something awkward.”
