“ Meetings made in Germany – Leipzig shows what this really means: reliability, value for money and the highest level of quality and sustainability.”Matthias Schultze, Managing Director, German Convention Bureau e.V.

Welcome to Leipzig.

“ Our Congress in Leipzig was a wonderful experience – for us as organisers, and for our delegates. We enjoyed great teamwork and creative input from our local partners, excellent venues with efficient services and welcoming attitudes, and a city that first surprised and then delighted us all!”Martin Sirk, CEO ICCA – International Congress and Convention Association

“As the first city in the world to be granted trade-fair rights, back in 1497, we have had enough time to gather a wealth of experience from which you benefit today.”Volker Bremer, Managing Director of Leipzig Tourismus und Marketing GmbH

“ Freedom, quality of life and inspiration: This is Leipzig. See for yourself. We would love to welcome you!”Burkhard Jung, Mayor of Leipzig

“ In Leipzig (almost) anything is possible, thanks to a tightly woven network of partners who work together hand in hand.”Axel Ehrhardt, Spokesman for Leipzig Hotel Alliance

... in the sound of music.

Henriette-Luise Neubert helps Leipzig’s musical reputation to resound throughout the world. The cellist has been a member of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra for over 14 years. Indeed, music and Leipzig have a long common history. Johann Sebastian Bach worked here for 27 years as music director of the city and as cantor at St. Thomas Church, where he conducted the famous St. Thomas Boys Choir. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Robert and Clara Schumann and Richard Wagner lived in Leipzig, as did Edvard Grieg and Gustav Mahler. “Leipzig – it is somehow inherently musical,” observes Neubert, who previously worked in Karlsruhe and Dresden. “One hears music everywhere, even outside the concert hall.”www.leipzig.travel/music

High-class – broad-reaching – light: The Leipzig Trade Fair, one of the most modern trade fair and congress complexes in Europe, together with the neighbouring Congress Center Leipzig (CCL), offer the perfect backdrop for all kinds of events, from academic conferences and corporate functions right up to large scale projects such as the Leipzig Book Fair. Situated at the cross roads of the two main trading routes in the Middle Ages, Leipzig is the oldest trade fair site in the world. Today, the Leipzig Trade Fair and the CCL are setting new standards, not only in the form of individual service and support packages, but also in the spectacular glass hall, an icon of modern architecture, which is located at the heart of the spacious site.www.leipziger-messe.com

... in the foundations of culture.

Riccardo Chailly was appointed as the 19th music director of Leipzig‘s Gewandhaus Orchestra in 2005. Before his appointment to Leipzig, the world-renowned conductor had worked with numerous orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Amsterdam‘s Concertgebouw Orchestra and the New York Philhar-monic, and had made guest appearances in many of the world‘s major concert halls and opera houses. Today, his leadership lends the Gewand-haus Orchestra a unique and passionate profile, which in turn generates global recognition. Chailly, who made his debut in his hometown of Milan at the age of just 17, says of his adopted city: “What particularly touches me here is not only the rich musical tradition – above all it is the warm welcome which is extended to visitors and guests alike.”www.gewandhaus.de

Intellectual – musical – academic: Leipzig boasts unrivalled collections of books housed in unique places, which document knowledge and culture through the centuries. The Biblio-theca Albertina, one of the longest established university libraries in Germany, is also an excellent example of neoclassical architec-ture. The building, which had been largely destroyed, has been completely restored from the 1990s onwards and now offers state-of-the-art facilities for more than 800 students and researchers. Over 150 different courses available at Leipzig University cater to over 28,000 students, and 30 Nobel prize winners have either studied, taught or conducted research in Leipzig. Its most illustrious alumni include Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Richard Wagner, Hans-Dietrich Genscher and Angela Merkel. www.ub.uni-leipzig.de

Johannes Hildebrandt sings in the world-famous St. Thomas Boys Choir, which celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2012, and is thus one of the oldest choirs in the world. The choir was once under the directorship of Johann Sebastian Bach, and the choristers, who number roughly 100, live together in the boarding school, which is fondly referred to as the “Kasten” (box) and attend the time-honoured St. Thomas School. The educational philosophy is based on the principles of mutual responsibility and respect for others. With regular concert tours, the choir has appeared in all the major concert halls in the world. In Leipzig, the choristers honour the tradition reaching back to Bach‘s time by offering weekly public performances of motets and cantatas.www.thomanerchor.de

Fast-paced – dynamic – growing: For more than ten years, Leipzig has been a key location for the high-end automo-tive industry. The Porsche Customer Centre offers exclusive conference facilities for up to 800 people, with cutting-edge media technology, professional support services and excellent catering; altogether exceptional surroundings for events of all types and on all scales. And the onsite race tracks offer something out of the ordinary beyond the conference room, both on-road and off-road. After all, riding in a “race taxi” beside a professional racing driver or even sitting at the wheel of a Porsche oneself under the professional eye of an instructor turns any event into a special occasion.www.porsche-leipzig.com

Natural – diverse – fascinating: Leipzig Zoo has created a unique tropical experience where visitors can see around 90 different kinds of exotic animals and 500 plant species under one roof spanning an area larger than two football pitches. The jungle river Gamanil flows through Gondwanaland, which offers exclusive function spaces with an Asian flair. For unforgettable events deep in the jungle and in the middle of Leipzig. www.zoo-leipzig.de

… on nature’s trail.

The musician Sebastian Krumbiegel embodies Leipzig‘s creative potential like almost no-one else. As a chorister with the world-famous St. Thomas Boys Choir, he first sang masses and cantatas, before forming a rock band while he was still at school and then storming the charts with the a-capella band “Die Prinzen”. Krumbiegel was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany at the end of 2012 in recognition of his long-standing commitment to social causes. “It‘s just amazing how Leipzig is constantly moving forward. I‘ve never really been away, and yet every time I look, the city has changed,” says the musician in reference to his hometown. Together with the other four “Princes”, he provided the musical accompaniment to the Gondwanaland opening ceremony.www.sebastian-krumbiegel.de

… in the heart of a city.

Historic – lively – sophisticated: Leipzig’s city centre offers excellent opportunities for shop-ping and memorable experiences, together with a nightlife without closing time. The famous Mädler arcade offers both. Originally built between 1912 and 1914 to house trade fair exhibitions, the complex is today home to elegant cafés and boutiques. And in the underground vaults, you will find Auerbachs Keller, made famous by Goethe’s Faust, serv-ing excellent regional food and drink speci-alities. Two statues at the entrance to the arcade portray characters from Goethe’s most famous tragedy. According to a long-standing tradition, anybody who touches Faust’s foot will be protected against bad luck.www.maedlerpassage.de

Prof. Dr. Friedrich-Wilhelm Mohr has built up the cardiac unit at Leipzig’s university hospital to become one of the world’s leading clinics for heart transplants and keyhole heart surgery. With such success stories, academics in Leipzig are maintaining an over 600-year-old tradition; not only at the university, but also at numerous other higher education and research estab-lishments. The Max Planck Society alone has three institutes in Leipzig. The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research boasts unmatched capabilities for researching human impact on ecosystems. And the BIO CITY LEIPZIG is the birthplace of solutions in the fields of biotechnology, biomedicine and healthcare. “Leipzig’s potential is in the heads of its people. If we can mobilise this, we can achieve the impossible,” asserts Mohr, whose previous workplaces include Munich, Frankfurt and Göttingen.www.uni-leipzig.de

... in the breath of inspiration.

With his modern figurative style of painting, Neo Rauch has become one of the most sought-after painters worldwide and is the most important representative of the “New Leipzig School”. The School’s geographic heart is a former cotton mill, which has attracted galleries from as far afield as New York and Chicago. “Arts Thrive in Leipzig, Bach’s Backyard” was the New York Times headline to describe Leipzig’s art boom and music tradition. www.eigen-art.com

Peter Maria Schnurr is the chef in charge of the Leipzig restaurant FALCO, which was the first restaurant in former East Germany to be awarded two stars by the Michelin Guide, an honour which Schnurr has been able to defend on several occasions since. Schnurr’s cuisine is characterised by a passion-ate, light and relaxed style, which is not only reflected in the food but also in the restaurant’s atmosphere. “In Leipzig, one immediately senses that the place is open for new influences and experiments – that’s what makes the city so unbelievably exciting,” affirms Schnurr, who previously worked in Berlin. www.falco-leipzig.de

Inspiring – innovative – groundbreaking: The cloud laboratory at the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research has unique facilities for researching the development of clouds. Thus it delivers fundamental findings that help us to understand how mankind impacts the climate – just one example of how Leipzig’s research facilities contribute to sustainability on a global scale.www.tropos.de

Meetings & events in Leipzig – at a glanceLeipzig is a key player on the world stage as a location for congresses, conferences, meetings and events, a fact illustrated by the major events such as the annual OECD World Transport Forum and the 50th ICCA world congress, the top meeting of the international event management industry, being held here. The annual Leipzig Interventional Course (LINC), which attracts almost 4,700 attendees, is one of the most significant congresses for vascular surgeons. Originally established by a group of Leipzig doctors, the congress now radiates across the globe: in 2012 the first off-shoot, the LINC Asia-Pacific, took place in Hong Kong. Other specialist conferences at European level, such as those for paediatric endo-crinology, for nutrition and metabolism and for microbiology, have always been and continue to be held in Leipzig. One of the reasons for this success is the immediate proximity of the Leipzig Trade Fair and the Congress Center Leipzig (CCL), where almost 100 congresses and industry events are held every year, attracting around 100,000 visitors. On top of this, thousands more people visit the trade fairs. The AMI Auto Mobil International, one of the most important

automotive trade fairs in Europe, attracts almost 250,000 visitors to its biennial event. The CCL was recently voted “Europe‘s Best Congress Centre” by the British industry magazine “Business Destinations”. The judges were impressed by the infrastructure of the building and surroun-ding area, the quality of the hotels and the accessibility and image of the city of Leipzig, as well as by the “flexibility of the confe-rence centre with its modular structure”. From autumn 2015, the Congress Hall at Leipzig Zoo will offer another option for conventions and conferences. The centrally located venue will enable tailor-made event solutions, incor-porating room capacities from 10 to 1,200 persons, as well as numerous lounge and foyer spaces. With around 2.8 million overnight stays, and this figure continu-ally rising, Leipzig is one of the most popular destinations for city breaks in Germany. Over 70 percent of visitors are business travellers.

Here & Back

The international airport at Leipzig/Halle provides a direct link between Leipzig and major interna-tional destinations and the international hubs at Frankfurt/Main, Munich and Düsseldorf. The trade fair site is situated in close proximity to the airport, and travel time between the city centre and the airport is just 15 minutes.Leipzig is also a key station on Deutsche Bahn’s high-speed rail network. The city can be reached by a direct train from Hamburg in three hours, from Frankfurt in around three-and-a-half and from Berlin in roughly one hour. Moreover, Leipzig is situated at the intersection of three major motorways, which make it easy to reach the city from any direction.Nothing is ever very far away in Leipzig. The main congress hotels, together with the key sights and world-famous cultural venues such as the Gewandhaus, are all just a few minutes‘ walk from each other within the compact city centre. An excellent public transport system offers connections to all parts of the city around the clock. The Leipzig City Tunnel offers fast connections directly from the city centre to the outlying region.

Sleeping & Meeting

Leipzig has over 14,500 guest beds in around 7,500 rooms, more than 40 percent of which have been awarded 4 or 5 stars. Leipzig’s hotels also offer congress, conference and seminar facilities, ranging from consulting rooms for a small number of people right up to ballrooms for up to 1,000 guests. In addition, the city also offers unique venues, with space for up to 10,000 people.

Relaxation & Indulgence

Leipzig also offers a multitude of activities beyond the walls of the conference room. The Gewandhaus Orchestra, the opera house, various theatres, cabarets and vaudeville stages, as well as numerous museums make a visit to Leipzig a lasting cultural experience. Add to this the hospitality displayed by Leipzig’s citizens, and a stay in the ancient centre of trading and culture becomes a real treat. Archi-tectural highlights such as the Old Town Hall, St. Thomas Church and St. Nicholas Church in the city centre, as well as the numerous Wilhelmine quarters, make the entire city a place to see and explore. Over 1,400 restaurants, cafés and bars offer gastronomic service for every palate. Leipzig’s network of architecturally unique “passages” offer a plethora of exclusive boutiques. And Leipzig Zoo, one of the most modern and innovative zoological gardens in the world, promises unforgettable experiences. The region on the city’s outskirts is characterised by unique diversity. Over 20 lakes, family-friendly waterways, idyllic woodland and impressive castles are waiting to be discovered and offer plenty of recreational activities.Away from the traditional tourist trails, it is possible to get to know the city from a completely different angle. Hidden highlights, green spaces and places of creative inspiration – all this and more is part and parcel of Leipzig. The guide “Hidden Leipzig – Off the Beaten Track” offers a round-up of these hidden treasures. www.hidden-leipzig.com

Green meetings – made in Leipzig

Leipzig is one of the pioneers for green meetings in Germany. Like many other congress partners in the city, the Leipzig Trade Fair and the CCL actively support the principles of corporate responsibility. In 2013, the CCL was presented with the “Meeting Experts Green Award” by the German Convention Bureau (GCB) and the European Association of Event Centres (EVVC). A comprehensive sustainability programme covering a broad range of areas, from energy-optimised air conditioning to environmentally friendly mobility solutions, has been in place at the Leipzig Trade Fair for some time now. The site is perfectly integrated into the public transport network across the city and outlying region. Upon request, free travel to and from the site using the local transport network (MDV) can be organised for exhibitors and visitors. The City of Leipzig itself is also a pioneer when it comes to sustainable growth. In 2012, Leipzig was presented with the German

Sustainability Award in the category “Quality of Life and Urban Structure”. The judges found that Leipzig is a particularly good example of the unification of sustainability, growth and quality of life – in the context of urban development, traffic planning and energy efficiency as well as citizen involvement and integration. In view of the continued population growth, the city has set out long-term development principles in the “Leipzig Charta for a sustain-able European city” which have triggered a multifaceted renaissance within the city boundaries.
