    1/4

    I. First, Mr. Hinz, my husband and I want you to know that we respect your work as a

music teacher and director, that we have appreciated and enjoyed the schools

choral programs and recognize that you are a gited teacher. !ou have contributed a

great deal in "oshua and #races musical development and skills. $he issue that

has brought about our meeting today is not about you, but deals solely with the

words o the song %&ive 'hile 'ere !oung.( 'e want you to know that our desireis to handle this in the best way, which is why we have sought counsel on how best

    to proceed.

II. I have years o e)perience participating in musical programs. In college I was a

member o the choral and madrigals, or which I had to audition. I have participated

in church and community choirs* I am a pianist who plays or church, weddings, and

other unctions. I currently sing with a worship group that leads congregational

singing. I received my +achelors degree in lementary ducation rom -ovenant

-ollege and my Masters in &ibrary cience rom Florida tate /niversity. I havetaught in both public and private schools and was the director o childrens services

or a regional library. I am now home educating my 0 children.

III. 'ere here to talk about how this message will be understood1

    a. chool policy states %2ny item with vulgarity or proane imprinting, se)ual

innuendo3harassing imprinting including 4hooters shirts or imprinting5is not

permitted.( 6o article with se)ual innuendo is tolerated. 6ow, we must consider

whether anyone in the audience will consider this song as se)ual innuendo.

7roving this point, you have 0 young adults rom your choir 8one o whom is on

the &eadership $eam9 whose conscience wont let them perorm this song. $hey

have spoken to many others in -ompany -, and :;;< o those acknowledge

that the song contains se)ual innuendo.

    b. 'e decided to meet with somebody whose lielong vocation has been to

understand the interpretation o words, our pastor and his wie 8=alph and -arol

=ebandt , phone number >0?@0A?@B;;:9, who agree that the message that will

be perceived is to go have se). 2nd this is the main point. I someone wears a

shirt with a message on it, it doesnt matter their intention, the only thing that

matters is the perception o others. I cite as an e)ample the restriction in the

student handbook on the wearing o %hooters( shirts. $hereore, this song is a

violation o the stated school policy against any messages with se)ual innuendo.

    c. In addition to our pastor and his wie, we contacted Faith +aptist -hurch o

-helsea and 7astor "erry #ould 8another man whose job is to interpret words9

what the lyrics mean to him, and he and his wie, &eslie, state that they

understand this song has se)ual innuendo 8his phone number is B:A@?B:@>ACB

and &eslies is B:A@?B:@>?::9. 7astor #ould contacted their head deacon,

Douglas 'ells and his wie "anice, whose child attends -helsea H, and they

also read the song as se)ual innuendo. 8$heir phone number is AE0@0EE@>?B.9

    d. 'e also contacted the parents o another member o -ompany -. $hey also

airm that the song has several se)ual innuendos.

    e. o, we have proven the point that there will be people in the audience who will

perceive the message o this song as se)ual innuendo, which violates written

    school policy.

. $his is why we would have to leave the auditorium during the show* we could not

in good conscience allow our young daughter and son nor ask my mother 8who

lives with us9 to sit through a perormance o this song. 2nd this also is why we

cannot invite our riends to the -ompanys show.

    g. 6ow, I propose a solution1 Ive ound this video on the internet where another

artist, Megan 6icole, has recorded the song, but with a change in the lyrics rom%tonight lets get some( to %tonight lets let go.(

    websites that show their interpretation1

    http133popdust.com3lyrics3between@the@lines@one@directions@live@while@were@young@lyrics3

yeah this song is about hooking up obviously H2H2H2 thatGs kinda unny actually

crazy till we see the sunJ also J2nd i we get together, yeah get together donGt let the pictures

leave your phoneJ "ust think about or a minute. I youGre too young it might be a bit diicult to

    understand *9

ince they target young girls as their main audience i dont think its a great message to be

singing to them Its obviously about having a one night stand. tick to lyrics appropriate or your

    audience.

I agree, these guys are young and it just seems wrong or them to be singing about this.

&&. +ecoming like $he 'anted, thatGs hilarious I actually ind it amusing that the irst single

on :DGs second album is hinting about se) while the irst single on their previous album was

really innocent, saying how a girl doesnGt know sheGs beautiul. I & :D and i they want to

have a more mature vibe to this album, let them. $rue Directioners agree, rightL 19

    http133songmeanings.com3songs3view3EBE;?>>:;A?BC00;CEA3

$his was the very irst :D song I listened to.

    I was not e)pecting a song about se). 1N

DonGt believe that itGs about se)L $he irst verse could have been about a boy trying to ask a girl

to sneak out to a party but then they say windows down. 'hy would they say windows downL

Doing what we doL I think about doing the do.

    $he chorus means1
