MEETING OF March 25, 2019 Welcome: Song Leader Steve “Sunshine” Mott led the Smile song, and Pres. Maureen Simons welcomed all. Steve Wolff led the pledge, and Mott led us in singing God Bless America. For Words, Mimi Gaffey shared comments on the meaning of philanthrophy, saying that since a philanthropist is one who chooses to better the world, which is what Rotary does, that makes all of us philanthropists. ANNOUNCEMENTS Pres. Maureen welcomed back John McShefferty, missing due to a long illness, and former Hi-Noon president Lloyd Rochambeau. There were get well cards to be signed for Ted Owen, who recently had heart surgery, and for Ann Kulchin, recovering from a fractured hip after a fall and the surgery to fix it. The two Carlsbad High students Hi-Noon sent to the regional Four-Way Test Speech Competition finished first and second. Pres. Maureen said our club’s second-place winner was unable to go to the regionals, so our third-place finisher went with our first-place finisher instead. They will now compete in the finals, to be held April 25 elsewhere in the county. Nancy Starling invited all to participate in a club Texas Hold-em Poker Tournament, to be held April 26 at the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Discovery Center, starting at 6pm. Guests welcome. Buy-in is $20, and there will be a chili dinner for $5 per person. BYOB. A sign-up sheet will be coming. Ken Clark said 60 students participated in the club’s annual AVID Seminar, and he thanked all the Rotarians who helped during the event, as well as those who submitted tips for interviewing. Meeting Responsibilities—Mimi Gaffey still has spots open on her Meeting Responsibilities list for the coming quarter and will again have the sign-up sheet during the next meeting. PROGRAM: David GrahamChief Innovation Officer for the City of Carlsbad

David Harrison introduced our speaker, David Graham, noting Graham’s position is the first of its kind, not just in Carlsbad, but in the entire region. Graham began by stating, “What was science fiction is now science fact” and that technologies once seen as being by and for younger folks are now mainstream in society. His job, he said “is to be always looking over the horizon.” Carlsbad, which often is at the forefront of whatever needs to be done, has several focuses going on now, he said, including Mobiliy (making streets more friendly and more efficient for everyone), Solar & Sustainability, Community & Civic Engagement (seeking input from all in the city) and Digital Transformation. Graham promoted the city”s Connected Carlsbad program, which is asking citizens, organizations, city leaders to provide input “to guide what we do in our city” and directed all to the website www.publicinput.com/Carlsbad to offer suggestions and more.

JOKER DRAWINGKen Clark won $8 in the Polio Plus drawing. The jackpot for is now $170.
