1354 Friday 02 September 2016 Dear Members of the Loyola College Community, There have been many highlights in the last fortnight that I am delighted to share with you in this edition of the Ignatian. Meeting of Jesuit and Companion Schools I recently attended the third meeting for this year of principals of the schools in Australia which belong to the Ignatian/Jesuit Association called JACSA. The meeting was held at St Ignatius in Drysdale over two days. We discussed ways of further strengthening the ties amongst our 10 schools with a view to further developing opportunities for our staff and students across a range of areas including formation of staff in the Ignatian charism, leadership development and combined activities. A Day in the Life of Loyola College On Thursday of last week the College ran a program for the Year 4 students in our feeder Catholic primary schools. All seven Catholic schools were invited to attend and we thank the four schools who were able to accept our invitation: Our Lady of the Way (Kingsbury), St Martin’s (Rosanna), Sacred Heart (Diamond Creek), St Francis of Assisi (Mill Park). The children had a wonderful morning and were able to see a secondary school in action, attend some classes and complete some activities as well as meet some of the children who had previously attended their own school and learn more about Loyola College. The College feels that such experiences help the children in their transition to secondary school regardless of where their families decide to send them. We are very pleased to be able to offer this experience to the children of our feeder Catholic primary schools. Library Week Last week a number of activities were held to celebrate Library Week in the iCentre which was beautifully decorated to emphasise the importance of libraries in learning. I thank Ms Do, our Head of the Learning Resource Centre and all the library staff for organising the activities and events. Father and Son Breakfast This year’s Fathers’ day breakfast was again a great success and fully booked out. Following the breakfast there was a prayer service in St Ignatius Chapel lead by Fr Gerry Healy SJ. I thank Mrs Chapman, Ms Gartland, Mrs Pritchard (Canteen Manager), Mrs Fox and Mrs Rinaldi, who prepared the breakfast and the VET Hospitality students who served. Early Dismissal Students will be dismissed at 2:15pm on Friday 09 September to allow staff to prepare the grounds and buildings for Open Day that will be held on the Sunday of that weekend.

Fathers’ Day We wish all dads a Happy Fathers’ day for next Sunday. It is a time to express gratitude for all that fathers bring and do for their families. We look to the example of St Joseph who cared for Jesus and Mary under very challenging circumstances. He is a wonderful role model for all fathers in the way that he cared for his family. We pray for his protection and guidance of all fathers as they carry out the important role of parenting. As mentioned earlier, next weekend we have our Open Day, an opportunity to showcase our wonderful College to the community and to attract future enrolments. The day represents in many ways a mosaic of everything that binds the College together and makes Loyola an educational community rooted in Christian faith and hope following the example of our patron Ignatius. FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (IGNATIAN MISSION & IDENTITY)

The ‘Heart of the College’ - St Ignatius’ Chapel It is no accident that the St Ignatius’ Chapel is at the very centre of Old Loyola. The Irish Jesuits who designed and built it, were making a very deliberate statement about faith and God being of paramount importance in our lives – ‘Ad majorem dei gloriam ‘All for the greater glory of God’ – the Jesuit motto.

A snapshot of the last month or so includes Years Seven and Nine Reconciliation, Grand-parents’ Mass, Year Seven Masses, MacKillop House Feast Day celebration and Philippines Immersion formation Mass. Added to this the communal praying of the Examen each Monday and, in the loft, College Choirs and Year Seven liturgical singing and Year Seven Eucharistic meals.

Modelling a living, vibrant Christian community in the Catholic Ignatian tradition should permeate everything we do. Coming together as an inclusive community for praise, worship and reflect is of the utmost importance to nurture and sustain this environment.

Year Seven class ‘eucharistic meal’ in the choir loft, part of their study on the symbolism of the Mass with their teacher, Miss Towns and our Youth Minister, Miss Chamoun.

Fr Vincent Le, about to celebrate a Year Seven class Mass

Mrs Treglia leading the singing for her Year Seven class Mass – We were very pleased that some parents attended. Loyola parents are welcome at all Loyola masses.

Grandparents’ Mass – Feast of St Joichim and St Anne, Jesus’ grandparents

Grandparents’ Mass – definitely a full house!

Fr Gerry Healy SJ together with the deanery priests are wonderful supporters of the faith life of our community.

FROM HOME~COLLEGE~PARISH LIAISON

Parish Life Week Parish Life Week at Loyola College is a great opportunity to acknowledge and reflect on the importance of the relationship between the Parish life and Loyola College. The celebration allows us to recognise the long standing collaboration of the College and the Diamond Valley Deanery Parishes in terms of nourishing the faith of the students and the collaborative relationships in building both the parish and school community in the celebration of the Eucharist, sacraments, Youth Ministry course in Year 11 and many other liturgical celebrations and pastoral concerns. During the week of 29 August until 02 September, different activities were attempted to express the unchanging message of the Gospel in today’s generation. The week focused on the aspect that parish connection and belongingness will help in the growth of one’s faith life journey and pastoral care towards others. Such activities during the week included the involvement of year 11 Youth Ministry students in putting up the parish display, Praise and Worship at lunchbreak, giving communion to the sick, Music performance at Assisi Centre Elderly Home, Adoration Evening, Mercy Pilgrimage at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Year 10’s Panel discussion from different speakers about the importance of Youth Ministry, BBQ lunch among students, families and some Deanery representatives and lastly Year 9’s praise and worship with the Archdiocese of Melbourne musical artists Genevive Bryant. The prayer is offered that the grace of God will continue to encourage the young people in nurturing their own faith and connections in the church and bring positive experiences and outcomes to the catholic faith community and beyond. We unite ourselves in the entire Australian vision for catholic Youth Ministry as stated in the Anointed and Sent document: to foster the total personal and spiritual growth of each young person; to draw young people into responsible participation in the life and mission of the catholic faith community and to empower young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in today’s world.

This year has been a great year for Chisholm House. One of our goals for 2016 is to increase the overall wellbeing of our house as a whole, by making sure that everyone feels welcomed and comfortable here at Loyola and in the Chisholm family. Together alongside Mr Valentino and our house committee we are striving for the Magis in all things by encouraging the House to join in and step up to the plate in House events

and in mentor activities. So far, Chisholm this year has had a smooth run with a great turnout at House Eisteddfod performing ‘The Wizard of Oz’. The level of participation at House Swimming was inspiring to see as although there were people who weren't Michael Phelps in the pool,

they still stepped up and competed to the best of their abilities. Alongside that, placing first in House Athletics which has been a cherry on top to our time as captains so far. One of our main initiatives this year has been our annual baby goods drive for the Caroline Chisholm Society. One of our other goals was to improve the awareness and participation for charity starting off with the baby goods drive. So this year joining forces with our main feeder school, Saint Mary’s, our baby goods drive has been the biggest it’s ever been. Recently in term 3 the Chisholm House committee filled one whole trailer of baby goods and delivered it to the Caroline Chisholm Society in Caroline Springs. It was truly rewarding to see all the hard work the society does for single mothers and their families, and on behalf of the whole committee, we feel that it was one of the most enriching experiences to be given the chance to spend some time at the society and to help them with little tasks. Being captains of Chisholm House has been an eye-opening experience and we will hold all of these moments close to us for many years to come. To be given the chance of leading Chisholm House is a feeling we will never forget.

Junior Performing Arts Concert This exciting event will feature our Year 7 and 8 students in a showcase of their talent. When: Thursday 15 September 2016 Time: 7:00pm Where: Loyola Companions Hall

Please come along and support our emerging talent as they sing, Act and dance their way

through classics from Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz Singing in the Rain, Aladdin and Wicked just to name a few.

FROM HEAD OF HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Loyola Olympic Week To celebrate the Rio Olympics Loyola held their own Olympics in Health and Physical Education. Students participated in 8 different activities that had an Olympic twist. Students walked, skipped and hopped across the beam, they

shot nerf guns at targets and Frisbee (clay target shooting) and performed archery with the nerf bow and arrows. Students ran relays and tested themselves to see how many badminton hits and forward rolls they could do in a set period of time.

All classes were competitive with many students walking away with an Asics Drink bottle for their efforts. The highlight was the “Olympic” spirit in which the events were held. Students participated with enthusiasm and to the best of their ability in all events. They were encouraging of each other and waited patiently for their turn. I would like to commend all the students on the way they approached this new and novel event and we look forward to the Beijing games in 4 years so we can once again complete the Loyola Olympics!

FROM HEAD OF HUMANITIES

Living Medieval Wednesday 10 August saw the Year 8 students at Loyola College participate in Medieval Day. Students got into the era by dressing up as various members of a medieval society, from peasants to knights, lords and ladies and bishops. They then participated in a range of activities that allowed them to learn about and experience life in Medieval Europe. Students tried their hand at archery and creating stained glass windows and learnt about the role of women in medieval society, life in a medieval court and crime and punishment.

Prizes were given to students who wore the most creative and authentic costumes. The winner was Luke Baz (ASKC) in his Bishop costume. The runners up were Juliette Iemmolo (FJPV) as a peasant, Kyra Treglia (KCMC) as a monk, Liam Garth (XMAC) as Bearfang the Viking, Joshua Tarulli (CDAM) as a knight and Mitchell Helliar (KLHA) as a medieval castle.

FROM LANGUAGES TEACHER

71st Indonesian Independence Day At the Indonesian Embassy, Canberra.

The VILTA (Victorian Indonesian Language Teacher Association) and Indonesian Consult General in Melbourne held a competition for students and teachers in Victoria. They provide seven scholarships for students and two scholarships for teachers to participate in the 71st Indonesian Independence Day Commemoration, on 17 of August, at the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra. After the interview selection process, I was selected as one of the scholarship recipients, representing Loyola College.

There were many activities held at the Indonesian Embassy for the participants, such as learning to play traditional musical instruments, Javanese and Balinese Gamelan, trying on various Indonesian traditional costumes, attending panel discussion by Indonesian scholars from ANU and participating in the flag raising formal ceremony at the Embassy. Students from seven different schools stayed with the Indonesian Embassy’s staff and they were enjoying the whole activities during the stay in Canberra.

At the Embassy, I also met with the Indonesian Ambassador for Australia, Mr. Najib Riphat Kesoema and it is also a pleasure to introduce Loyola College to a wider community

there. Especially when one of Loyola College alumni, Emilia Sterjova who currently studies International Relations and Indonesian Language at LaTrobe University, won a scholarship sponsored by the

Indonesian Embassy, to go to Indonesia last year to attend the Indonesian Independence Day ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.

Below is an article from one of our Loyola College alumni, Emilia Sterjova on her experience in Indonesia.

"Just last year, I was invited by the Indonesian Consulate to go on an all expenses paid trip to Indonesia for over a week. My new friend Seisia from Adelaide and I were selected to represent Australia at the Presidential Palace for a Flag Raising Ceremony for the 70th year of Indonesia's independence.

Once we arrived in Indonesia we met students from 17 different countries around the globe. Throughout our trip we were taken to the most beautiful tourist destinations in both Bali and Jakarta. We were spoilt with luxurious hotels and restaurants and with large ceremonies almost every night to congratulate us. I was chosen due to my high marks in Indonesian and my CV.

I cannot begin to explain just how blessed I feel. There are not enough words in the English language or the Indonesian language that can describe just how grateful I am for such an incredible opportunity. My dream to travel to

Indonesia finally came true in the most remarkable way. I am truly thankful to everyone involved in organising this trip including the Indonesian Consulate in Melbourne and Indonesia (Pak Oldrin dan Bu Ita). Whilst I was in Indonesia both the organisers and locals made me feel very welcome and helped me to experience the best trip I could ever imagine.

I would like to thank my wonderful Indonesian teachers Bu Louise Crowe, Bu Temmy, Pak Setiawan, Pak Ray and the other teachers at Loyola College who helped me to develop a passion in Indonesian that continues through my university life at LaTrobe. You all formed my foundations in the language and taught me to reach for the stars. You all also spent several extra hours with me both at lunch and after school to improve my language skills.

Hopefully the relations between Australia and Indonesia will continue to improve. In the future, I hope to help achieve a stronger tie between the two countries.

Satu tanah, satu negara, satu bahasa... dirgahayu Indonesia!"

FROM LSC COMMITTEE MEMBER

The LSC committee have been hard at work this term. Not only is there talk and planning of the much awaited Footy Day amongst us, but there is much more! We are taking into consideration the Loyola Founders Cafe. We have some amazing members of the committee who are sending through the proposal and who are even drawing a floor plan! Some students have requested the idea of having a student common room or an area where we have a microwave and essentials needed for students to prepare their lunch. We have been brainstorming ideas and hope you enjoy the results. The chilled drink taps have been on our minds as well. We are planning to install some more in certain areas so keep a look out!

Don't forget to keep raising money for your house charities! It's a minimum $20.00 and it can make a difference. Now, the talk you have all been waiting for...We have a few surprises up our sleeves ready for Footy Day! Not giving too much away, but there's games, food, competitions and more! We hope to see many of you there as it is an exciting day for all.

Remember, if you ever have an idea that you would like to request to the committee and see develop let us know! We are always very enthusiastic on having the opinions of students outside the committee and would love to hear your thoughts. Email us at [email protected] or find us and let us know!

Thank you, and we hope you enjoy Footy Day!
