Myanmar is giving priority to providinghealth care for mothers and children. Effortsare being made to reduce mortality rates ofinfants, the under-fives and expectant mothersas well as combating HIV/AIDS. Two thirds ofthe mortality rate of children under five is infants.

With a view to reducing disease outbreaksand such mortality rates, Myanmar is attachinggreat importance to taking care of mothers andchildren, including infants.

Babies aged less than five months needbreastfeeding only. And a baby must be breastfedwithin a half hour after its birth. The earliestbreastfeeding can prevent diseases and isnutritious. Moreover, there are many benefitsfrom breastfeeding such as family planning, prevention of breast cancer and ovarian cancer, cutting household expenses, having more timefor looking after other children and having bothphysically and mentally fit children.

Maternal and child heath care tasks areextensively being carried out as community-based health week activities. Every mother andevery family needs to participate in thoseactivities.

In taking care of the health of mothers andinfants, Myanmar is taking measures forlaunching public educative campaigns, deliveringbabies by way of disinfecting, caring for motherswho have just given a birth and the under-fives,rendering assistance to nutritious developmentof mothers and children and carrying outvaccination processes. Mothers on their partare therefore to take part in such measures.

Afghan detainee dies after exercise at Guantanamoafter working out on an elliptical machine inCamp 6, a communal section of the Guantanamoreserved for well-behaved prisoners, said militaryspokesman Army Col Scott Malcom. The prisonerwas taken to the base hospital, where he later died.

Authorities planned to send his remains backto Afghanistan.

Gul is the seventh prisoner to die at thedetention centre since January 2002, when the USbegan using the American Navy base insoutheastern Cuba to hold captured detaineessuspected of links to al-Qaeda or the Taleban.Five other deaths were declared suicides. Anotherwas from colon cancer.

Malcom said the death was still underinvestigation but that an autopsy completedThursday appeared to indicate a heart attack or apulmonary embolism as the cause. He said USpatient privacy laws prevented him fromdiscussing any details about Gul’s medical history.

As a prisoner, he was “among the mostcompliant” at Guantanamo, which now holdsabout 172 men, but he had not been cleared forrelease, said Malcom, a spokesman in Miami,Florida, for the military command that overseesthe detention centre.

Gul had been held more than eight yearswithout charge, and the military said in a statementthat he was an “an admitted Taleban recruiter”who operated an al-Qaeda guesthouse and hadmet several times with Osama bin Laden.

Tree rings give clues to ancient droughts FAYETTEVILLE, 4 Feb—A study of

tree rings in Mexico may give clues tothe role major droughts played in thefates of long-gone ancient civilizations,US researchers say.

Scientists at the University ofArkansas say their 1,238-year-longtree-ring chronology — the longestand most accurate of its kind for Mexicoand Central America — is the first toreconstruct the climate of pre-colonialMexico on an annual basis for morethan a millennium, pinning down fourancient megadroughts to their exactyears, an American Geophysical Unionrelease reported Thursday.

One large ancient droughtpreviously confirmed in the USSouthwest between 1149 and 1167 is

shown to have extended into centralMexico, where it may have devastatedmaize crops, potentially giving a fatalblow to the declining Toltec culture,David Stahle, a UA paleoclimatologist, says. The rainfall chronology providesconfirmation of the so-called TerminalClassic drought that someanthropologists tie to the collapse ofthe Mayan civilization.

“Certainly these cultural changeswere very complicated — probablynot one single explanation can accountfor the collapse of the Mayancivilization,” Stahle says. “[But] ourstudy will allow other scientists to morethoroughly investigate and understandthe impact of these droughts.”

TUCSON, 4 Feb—Sand dunes in avast area of Mars, long thought to bestatic and frozen in time, are moving,US researchers say.

Researchers at the University ofArizona have been collecting imagesof the dunes using the High ResolutionImaging Science Experiment cameraon NASA’s Mars ReconnaissanceOrbiter, which reached Mars five yearsago. The images show sandavalanches and ripple changes in thedune fields covering an area the sizeof Texas at the edge of the planet’snorthern polar cap, a university releasereported Thursday.

Scientists had long believed thedunes to be fairly static since beingcreated long ago when winds on theplanet’s surface were much strongerthan seen today, HiRISE investigatorCandice Hansen of the PlanetaryScience Institute, Tucson, Ariz, said.

Wireless charging powers forward for mobile devices NEW YORK, 4 Feb—Gadgets are increasingly

becoming more mobile and wireless, and we’rebreaking free of cords and wires—or so we wish.Even wireless devices have to be plugged in everyso often to recharge their batteries. Wireless chargingtechnology could change that, though, and enableus to live in a truly cord-free world.

What if you could travel with just one chargingoption for all your digital devices, instead of luggingaround a tangle of charging cables? Wouldn’t it benice if you could set down your smartphone on aspecial charging table or car dashboard to power it

up without any cords?Plugging your device into an electricity source

with a cord is a tedious pain—especially when youconsider the diverse array of connector types andpower cords involved. Traditional charging relieson electricity conducted directly between a deviceand a connecting physical wire or through contactwith batteries. On the other hand, inductive charginguses magnetic and electromagnetic energy to inducea transfer of power wirelessly. Many electrictoothbrushes charge this way.

unit of gross domestic product (GDP) for China’smajor energy intensive industries decreased bymore than 20 percent during the 2006-2010 period, the statistics authorities have reported.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS)attributed the rising energy efficiency for theindustries to the government’s growing investmentin energy savings, and the accelerated energy-saving technological upgrading for the sectors.

The sectors include oil processing, coking andnuclear fuel processing, chemicals and chemicalproduct manufacturing, non-metallic mineralproduct manufacturing, ferrous metal smelting androlling, nonferrous metal smelting and rolling, andelectricity and heat producing and supplying.

Data from the energy department of the NBSshowed that the industries had saved a total of 400million tonnes of standard coal, contributing morethan 60 percent to the entire country’ s energysavings. The performance of the energy intensivesectors is key to whether China can reach its energyefficiency goal, as the industries accounted forabout 77 percent of China’s total industrial energyconsumption and more than half of the country’stotal energy consumption, said the NBS.—Xinhua

Pakistani judge ordersAmerican held eight more days

LAHORE, 4 Feb—A court on Thursday orderedthe detention of an American official suspected inthe shooting deaths of two Pakistanis extended by atleast eight days, in defiance of US demands the manbe released immediately.

The United States says the American, identifiedby Pakistanis as Raymond Allen Davis, hasdiplomatic immunity and is being illegally detained. He has told a Pakistani court that he acted in self-defence last week when he shot two armed men whowere intent on robbing him at gunpoint as he drovehis car in the city of Lahore. Police say they arepursuing possible murder charges.

The shootings have stoked anti-Americansentiment in Pakistan just as Washington is trying toseek more cooperation with Islamabad in thecampaign against militants. The US is alreadywidely unpopular in Pakistan, in part because of itsundeclared campaign of drone missile strikes in thenorthwest borderlands.

The deaths have also added to pressure onPakistan’s weak government here, which will facecharges of being an American lackey if it hands overDavis to the United States. Refusing to do so risks

“For perpetuation of the Union” is afundamental concept conceived by Union Spiritof national brethren.

Union Spirit is the patriotic spirit of everycitizen who loves the Union of Myanmar. In thisregard, patriotism means national races’ spiritof loving own races as well as the Union ofMyanmar.

The Union of Myanmar is a multiethniccountry. In the course of the nation’s history, nationalraces have been living through thick and thin, dealingwith varieties of vicissitudes. Various national racessuch as Mon, Shan, Bamar and Rakhine have beenpreserving fine traditions of the motherland. Chin,Kachin, Kayah and Kayin national races have beenjoining hands with other national races region-wisethroughout successive periods.

In late Konbaung period and the time of theBritish colonists, Myanmar was the language usedby the great majority of national brethren. But, inthe time of the British government, English wasthe first official language and Myanmar was thesecond official language in the nation. So, Britishcolonialists termed Myanmar as Burma.

After regaining independence, Myanmarbecame the Union of Myanmar of all nationalraces of states and regions.

So, the term “the Union of Myanmar”became the common term of all national races.

Internal armed conflicts broke out for manyyears after the independence. However, successive governments and the Tatmadawthroughout the periods managed to safeguardthe sovereignty of the Union of Myanmar. Therefore, the Union of Myanmar has stood tilltoday.

For perpetuation of the Union is a boundenduty of all Myanmar people of various nationalraces.

Only with cooperation and harmony, will itbe possible for national races to make a goodheadway in carrying out tasks for developmentof the Union of Myanmar. It is because a nationalrace alone is not capable of exploiting and utilizingnatural resources of the Union. In the process, they can achieve greater success only if they putreliance and trust in one another.

That is an objective approach. Indeed, eachnational race has to try to develop and preservetheir languages, cultures and customs, whileworking hard for progress of the region concerned. At the same time, they have to work closely in theinterest of the whole Union of Myanmar.

For ensuring perpetuation of the Union isnot the spreading of a political propaganda. Thatis, in fact, exactly the most important thingneeded by all national brethren. All Myanmarcitizens have to be convinced of and exercise thatpoint as an unarguable concept.

Therefore, none of the people should think ofbreaking up the Union. The entire people are alsoto consider that Our Three Main National Causes, namely Non-disintegration of the Union, Non-disintegration of national solidarity, andPerpetuation of sovereignty embodies the drive forperpetuation of the Union.

Only then, will the people of all nationalraces be able to serve the public interests.

To serve the interests of the entire people ofthe Union covers social improvements such asfulfillment of the basic needs of all national races, improvement of the education, health care andrelations, promotion and preservation of theircultures, and peaceful life enjoyed in accordancewith the law and customs.

In order to improve the socio-economic statusof the people of the Union, all must work together

with fair-mindedness.If the people lack unity in working in the

interest of the Union, without any doubt, they willnever achieve the common goal. It is becausenatural resources and enterprises, which can bringabout benefits to the whole Union, are interrelatedto each other.

If the Union splits into pieces, none of thepeople enjoys fruitful results. Only if the peoplework hard together like a national family, canthey all enjoy the taste of development.

(See page 9)

However much the history of the Union of Myanmar, home to all national races, was like in the past, good orbad, at a time when the nation has seen the StateConstitution, it is required of the entire people to havepositive attitude in looking back to past events of thenation. We have to learn lessons from the strengths andweaknesses of past experiences.

Perpetuation of the Union, fundamental cause of all national racesKo Ko Maung Gyi

1. For all national races to safeguard the national policy—Non-disintegration of the Union, Non-disintegration of national solidarity, and Perpetuation of sovereignty

2. For all national races to keep Union Spirit ever alive and dynamic amongnational people

3. For all national races to wipe out, through national solidarity, disrup-tions caused to peace, stability and development of the nation by internaland external subversives

4. For all national races to make efforts with might and main to build amodern, developed discipline-flourishing democratic nation inaccordance with the State Constitution approved by the great majorityof the people

5. For all national races to work in concert with national unity for perpetu-ation of the Union that has existed for thousands of years

Objectives of 64th Anniversary Union Day (2011)

HAILING THE 64thANNIVERSARY UNION DAY:

(from page 8)However much the history of the Union of

Myanmar, home to all national races, was like inthe past, good or bad, at a time when the nationhas seen the State Constitution, it is required ofthe entire people to have positive attitude inlooking back to past events of the nation. We

If the Union splits intopieces, none of the peopleenjoys fruitful results. Onlyif the people work hardtogether like a nationalfamily, can they all enjoythe taste of development.

Strength of unity have to learn lessons from the strengths andweaknesses of past experiences.

And only with positive attitude, can theyput trust and mutual understanding to each other.Positive attitude and mutual understanding aretwo interrelated attitudes. Only when twounderstand each other, can they set mutual trustbetween them. And only with mutual trust, willthe people cultivate the sense of optimism.

In that case, positive attitude means thepeople ignore weak points, mistakes andmisunderstanding of one another, but view onlygood behaviours of one another such as strongpoints, good deeds, good habits, good moralconduct, preservation of national culture and finetraditions, peaceful nature, and willingness to dowholesome acts.

Surely, there will be a peaceful andprosperous Union of Myanmar if nation-buildingtasks are carried out with positive attitude amongnational races, Regions and States, governingbodies who will take over State duties, and politicalparties that have rights to deal with national andpolitical affairs.

So, it is obligatory for each and everycitizen to have positive attitude and optimism inshouldering nation-building tasks in order thatthe people can have much-needed requirementsfulfilled. To be able to do so, we all have to showgood behaviours such as great forbearance, patience, hard work and magnanimity.

I believe that only then will the Union ofMyanmar be a peaceful land with a promisingfuture. Therefore, every citizen must abstainforever from thinking of, speaking and doingthings that can be harmful to perpetuation ofthe Union.

In conclusion, I would say that all musthave a deep conviction that perpetuation andprosperity of the Union is the most fundamentalcause of the entire national races.

Now he was looking for an easy, cheap way to store all that data.

Caron suggested cloud computing, which allows people and businesses tostore their data on servers managed bybig tech companies like Google orMicrosoft, at much lower cost thanbuilding up their own data storage.

But he ran into a problem:Luxembourg law forbids personal datato be stored on shared servers outsidethe country, and livestock like cows orsheep might be included in thatlegislation — or so Caron feared.
