KAUA'I NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE COMPLEXCELEBRATES REFUGE WEEK

Visit Your National Wildlife Refuges: October 14-20, 2012

Treat yourself with a visit to the Kaua'i National Wildlife Refuge Complex during National Wildlife Refuge Week, October 14-20. Enjoy the soul-stining sights and sounds of nature.

The Kaua'i National Wildlife Refuge Complex which is comprised of Hule'ia, Hanalei, and KIlauea Point National WildlifeRefuges are a proud part of the National Wildlife Refuge System, a nationwide network of public lands set aside to protectwildlife. The nation's 556 national wildlife refuges and 38 wetland management districts offer Americans wonderfulopportunities to fish, hunt, hike or observe fascinating creatures in the wild. "Kaua'is National Wildlife Refuges demonstratedynamic components of natural and cultural resources that are being protected, restored, and perpetuated" states Project Leader,Shannon Smith.

By preserving and protecting America's rich wildlife legacy, refuges benefit us in many ways. The plants and animals theysustain help clean our air, filter our water, pollinate our crops and remind us that we are part of the natural world. WithoutRefuges, local communities would also lose jobs and businesses that depend on Refuge tourism.

Visitors to Refuges like what they find there, according to a study this year by the U.S. Geological Survey. Nine thousand out of10,000 respondents reported satisfaction with refuge recreation, information and education, public service and conservation."Nowhere else do Ifeel such a deep sense of connection with the land, the plants, and the wildlife," offered one respondent."Visiting a Refuge is truly a spiritual experience."

Americans have a proud tradition of working to protect and preserve the nation's natural and cultural resources. You can be partof all that, right here at Kilauea Point, Hule'ia, and Hanalei National Wildlife Refuges. Consider volunteering or joining theKilauea Point Natural History Association.
