Meeting Minutes To: Cassie Schumacher-Georgopoulos

From: Glenn Walters

Date: February 16, 2016

Project Name: Barwell Road Park

Subject: Citizen Planning Committee Meeting #1

Barwell Road Park Public Workshop #1

Meeting Dates: February 6 & 7 2017

During the Community Planning Committee meeting and the Public Workshop, several ideas were discussed:

Provide multipurpose uses – flexible uses.

Cater to all age groups and provide a variety of uses.

Look at demographics to make sure all ages are covered.

Create safe pedestrian access to the park – there aren’t enough sidewalks

Make everyone comfortable.

Community center has to flow with the park and school is an important neighbor.

Look at Joint Use Agreement with school to determine the relationship between school and community

center/park.

Provide classes and nature education in the park to take advantage of being next to the school and to give

the kids an educational experience.

Provide playgrounds and pavilions.

Remember that we are both suburban and rural and reflect that in the program and design.

Agriculture – maybe think about community gardens or something like that.

Youth get overlooked – wifi things that make people comfortable.

Build a water feature of some sort with water spouts, fountains, splash pad.

Connect to the Neuse Trail Greenway.

Consider that there are 30 HOAs that will enjoy the park.

Need transportation options for youth and/or seniors (what are bus routes.)

Encourage learning.

Lighting and security are important.

Attention getters around the park are important to get people to come into the park.

Tap into other assets around like the greenways.

Work with the natural features – its part of who we are.

Maybe provide a zip line and adventure oriented activities.

Create nature trails

Preserve the character of the site

A pool is needed in this area.

Maybe provide a canoe ramp?

What about a little camp ground for the boy scouts and girl scouts?

A dog park so that they can run around.

Look at Knightdale Station dog park.

We need team oriented sports facilities too since we don’t have any located nearby.

The main sewer line runs behind the church.

Maybe build a pond for fishing.

Provide art in the park.

Security cameras will be needed.

Incorporate science and math related education.

Don’t duplicate services and activities that are found elsewhere and nearby.

When connectivity happened at Anderson Point, it began to flourish.

Remember that there are wetlands on the site and nearby.

Zone the park into use areas that work together with each other.

Don’t dramatically alter or manipulate the natural landscape.

Need courts for basketball and tennis.

Traffic is a big issue, which makes walking and biking difficult.

The community center seems to focus mostly on school kids and the schedule makes it hard for adults to

use the facility. It needs to be open and accessible for everyone to use.

Need to include parking – especially for events.
