Dear Parents/Guardians, Dear Parents/Guardians, Hope you all had a wonderful Family Day weekend. Although it was a short week, we had so much going on at school! I am a firm believer that the learning and growth for students comes not only in what they do in class, but in trying new things and becoming involved in as many leadership opportunities as possible. Thank you to our Eco-Club (open to Grades 1-6) led by Ms. Brown and parent Ms. LeBlanc, for our Eco-Spirit Assembly today. Students are taking action by raising awareness on a number of issues: 1) We received gold certification for all the efforts from last year and looking towards platinum status 2) Starting our first-ever Eco-Class Challenge- where our student Eco-Rangers look at each class and their responsibility towards Rolph’s eco-friendly goals. These include minimizing the garbage we have at school, having a boomerang lunch, proper recycling, computers off when not in use, lights out, and are we making use of GOOS (good on one side) paper? The top class each month will hold the ECO-trophy. Who will be our first winner? The assembly also brought awareness on the global issue of endangered animals and in particular, the African elephant. Next Friday it’s Eco-Spirit Day! Wear green and bring in a loonie or toonie to support this cause. In addi-tion over the last two weeks, under the leadership of Ms. Lutek and Ms. Lazar, WE Club students have visited every class to talk about world hunger and how they want to make a difference. Information on the WE Bake for Change is in the pages that follow along with other news. Their event will be happening next Tuesday, February 27th at lunch. Let’s support the hard work and leadership that this group of students have been modelling all year.
I also want to acknowledge the learning and leading of staff. On Tuesday, we started FIT-FAB-FEB at Rolph! Yes, wellness is alive and well in our classrooms and with the modelling from staff. Thanks to the idea and work of Ms. Amanda Smith and Mr. Campbell Bryson, this collective staff wellness goal is under way. Read the pages ahead for details. Our first Collaborative Inquiry session took place yesterday. It had two different foci- The BAR Model and Use of Manipulatives. We have another session scheduled for next Tuesday, February 27th on Technology.
Want to know more?? I will be sharing highlights of the learning and where we are at in our School Improvement Plan at Monday night’s Home and School/ School Advisory meeting. I will also be updating parents on the budget and resources that have been allocated to classrooms and kidsJ. Hope to see as many of you there as possible. I will be speaking at length as I am excited on the progress, on many fronts, since our last parent meeting.
See you on Monday at 6:30 in the library,
Have a lovely weekend!

Comprehending Mental Health and Mindfulness in Portable 4
In class, we have been talking about mental health and mindfulness. We have been learning
about what the effects of mental health does to your body. Mental health can give you
anxiety, depression, mixed emotions and many more things. Taking the time to do things
like relaxing, meditating or going outside for a walk can help you manage stress or anxie-
ty. When you feel stressed, tired or even depressed it’s good to unwind and let go of
whatever is making you not feel like yourself. Listening to zen music, doing yoga or even
talking about your problems, can change you. So today, during Mindfulness Monday we
tried to relax by listening to some calming music to start our day and week. It’s good to
talk and relax. In conclusion, relaxing and calming down once in a while can help you start
off the day happy and in a good mood. So relax, take deep breaths to be in a state of calm
and remember to focus on the present moment.

Upon entering the school and turning right you will notice a new bulletin board display filled with
Winter Olympic images. On close inspection, you’ll see that there is a pathway leading to all of the
PyeongChang Olympic venues. This board illustrates the team effort by the teachers to be more
mindful and focus on wellness. Also, we want to take more steps to be more active in freezing Febru-
ary. Our goal is to get enough steps that when calculated in kilometers would take us around
PyeongChang from each venue, from the coastal events to the mountains area. The 2018 Olympic
mascot Soohorang will be our marker as we move along this pathway each day and the movement
will be Rolph Road staff! How? Well, at the end of each day our staff tally up their steps and the total
is converted into kilometers then moves the mascot along to the next site. The staff hope to make it
from the Gangneung coastal cluster to the final Phoenix Snowboard Park by March 2nd!! A journey of
a thousand miles starts with one step, and we hope that as a team we will get there together.

Grade 2 and 3 Rolph Road
Winter Fun Olympics
When snow returns to Rolph Road expect a sporting fun-filled afternoon of Rolph Grade 2 and 3 Olympians competing at 5 outside venues. Starting indoors, the 10 competing national teams will take the Rolph Road Olym-pic Oath (written by Grade 4 students) and exit to their first event while proclaiming their unique chant (written by our own music teacher Mr. Bai-ley). Hockey and Biathlon will be spectator favourites. Students will keep warm and recharge at the Rest Centre - Hot chocolate anybody?
The first possible date for this event is Monday, February 26. However, the forecast is not looking good, so start your snow-dancing or text Old Man Winter for one more snowfall and let the games begin!

This will purchase 4 goats, 3 hens and a rooster for families (through Plan International’s work in South America, Asia or Africa) who need help to feed them-selves. These animals will provide food (milk, eggs) and a means to have an in-come and the ability to provide health care, education, shelter and clothing for their families.

(There will be packaged commercial nut-free options).
WHEN and WHERE:
Tuesday, February 27th
Lunch time in the gym (Students who go home for lunch are invited to come to the gym either at the beginning or end of the lunch break)
PLEASE JOIN IN this WE Club effort to “Make the World a Better Place.”
After school on Wednesday February 21st, seven teachers and 12 students took to the gym and channeled the Olympic spirit in a game of teacher vs. student dodgeball. After a couple of warm-up rounds, the serious games began, under Mr. Bryson’s unbiased refereeing. There were valiant efforts and moments of true heroism from both sides, leading to a 3-3 tie. Ultimately, the grit and stamina of the students outmatched the size and strength of the teachers in a dramatic, tie-breaking final round. Thank you to teachers and students alike for their animated and enthusiastic participation in the third annual teacher vs. student dodgeball showdown!
