HAWAII CLUB 30 DISTRICT 5000 CHARTERED: JUNE 20, 1939 RI PRESIDENT:

IAN H.S. RISELEY DISTRICT GOVERNOR:

NALANI FLINN

Glen Perry, Rotary Foundation Chair, presented PP Chuck Braden with his Paul Harris Pin with 2 Sapphires which means he has donated more then $2000.00 to the Rotary Foundation. Congratulations Chuck!

The meeting was brought to order by President Steve Koyama. Pres. Steve mentioned that the Rotary focus of the month of April was Maternal and Children’s Health. He also thanked the scribe, and introduced the Head Table.

The Inspiration was done by PP Chad Adams, who never shies from the microphone to start off with a quick bit of humor. The Pledge to the Flag was led by Youth Service Chair Patti Mitchell. Introduction of Guests was by our newest Rotarian Alida Camelia Jurconi. PDG Phil Sammer was once again called upon as Songleader. We were joined by first-time visiting off-shore Rotarian Bill Houghton, his lovely wife Jenny and daughter Paige. Bill hails from the Rotary Club of Las Vegas, which was the first club in Vegas and also is the largest. Thoughts of slot machines spilling untold winnings certainly aroused many of our imaginations.

Eager to capitalize on our human frailties, PP Rhodora Pagay quickly swooped up the Aloha Bucket and proceeded to divest our group of any hard earned cash that still lingered after she caused the latest downturn in the stock market. PP Gene Grounds, Sylvia Makk, Alida Camelia Jurconi, PDG Phil Sammer, PP Dave Livingston, PP Dave Hamil, Kathryn Henski, Rep. Bob McDermott, and PP Janet Scheffer all succumbed to the web cast by the dame with the bucket.

Pres. Steve swiftly turned back to business with several announcements and reminders. The D5000 Conference is fast approaching on May 18 at gorgeous Ko’Olina Resort. PP Chad also chimed in regarding the refreshingly renamed “Spring Training” this coming weekend that was at one time referred to in rather dull vernacular as the District Assembly. Flowers seemed to bloom even as he spoke. Taiwanese Sister Club Liaison

Nora Chen mentioned a great opportunity to visit our sister clubs in Taiwan coming up in early May. She promises a good time for all who can join the trip. Vocational Service Chair Sylvia Makk noted that Rotary on the Road will be held on May 16th at local Koa furniture manufacturer extraordinaire Martin and MacArthur. A spring bouquet of her own, especially in the bright yellow dress was Community Service Chair Kathryn Henski, who mentioned several upcoming events such as the March of Dimes Walk, the Tree Planting at Waikiki Elementary, and the Books for Kids at Kapalama Elementary. Foundation Chair Glenn Perry thanked the group for nearly doubling our Foundation donations as compared to our annual goal! We are at 93% participation, and he hopes to hit 100% which has not been done in many years. He also brought PP Chuck Braden up and recognized him for attaining PH+2. Thank you Chuck!

A sunny personality herself, Magda Alexander beamed as she read off the list of Birthdays and Anniversaries for the month of April. Birthday’s included Janel Denny, yours truly, PP Gene Gelfo, Ryan Inouye, Mela Kealoha-Lindsey, Paul McGillicuddy, and Victoria Paris. And our guest Paige! Celebrating Rotary Anniversaries were PP Sally Blanchard, Nora Chen, PP Gene Grounds, Kathryn Henski, Ryan Inouye, Pres. Steve Koyama, Sylvia Makk, Clyde Min, Vistoria Paris, PDG Phil Sammer, Ikko Tomita, and Jeremy Willson. Those in attendance filled the front, had the obligatory song belted out to them, and sparkled with toothy grins as the paparazzi snapped photos of the illustrious group.

Our Program Chair Paul McGillicuddy introduced our speaker for the day Laura Brucia-Hamm. Laura is the COO of Hale Kipa, a great local 501c3 organization dedicated to helping at-risk youth become better people. After a short

video presentation, she introduced Retired Family Court Judge Lanson Kupau. He spoke eloquently of his passion for the organization, why he devotes his energy towards these kids, and how Hale Kipa

helps so many. Hawaii has one of the highest teen suicide rates in the nation, and this is a tragedy. Over 2,000 kids are helped annually by Hale Kipa, through over 17 programs on all major Hawaiian Islands. They have emergency shelters for run-away youths, intensive home therapy, and therapeutic services. Judge Kupau challenged us into action to help a child as it will not only make you feel good, but will fill your soul. After all, if these kids turn into productive and positive citizens in our community, we all will benefit.

Respectfully submitted, PP Dave Hamil Today’s Scribe
