Matching Funds Request

March 8, 2013

RECEIVED MAR 1 1 2013

SUPT'S OFFICE

During the 2012-2013 school year, the Parent Teacher Governance Organization {PTGO) at Cameron Park conducted a fall fund raiser which was a school-wide Read-a-Thon. Some of the profits from the fund raiser were used towards the purchase of new playground to be used by all students in grades K-S. The actual cost of the playground totaled $39,673.07. Attached you will find the estimate for sale that we have agreed upon. The playground should be delivered and installed on April 3, 2013. We are requesting matching funds in the amount of $1,000 from the Board of Education. The playground will provide the students with opportunities for increasing their levels of physical fitness through physical activity. If you need additional information, please let me know. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

HILLSBOROUGH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Steven Weber, Principal Jon Corcoran, Assistant Principal

RECEIVED MAR 1 5 2013

March 15, 2013

Mr. Rhodes, SUPT'S OFFICE This letter is to request the generous $1,000 matching grant from the Orange County School

Board. Recently, Orange County Schools made a decision to invest in student achievement by

voting to purchase a device for each student in grades 3-S. I would like to develop a Learning

Commons at Hillsborough Elementary School. A Learning Commons is flexible, open, wireless,

comfortable, inspiring and practical. The key to the Learning Commons is ownership; the

students own it. It is a place where space, resources, and help are always available; a place

where technology is available to create products; a place where students can visit virtual spaces

they've helped create. lfthey own it, they will use it.

We will no longer need a computer lab, once students have their own device. The goal is to

convert the 3-S grade computer lab into a Learning Commons. I want to create a learning space

that every student wants to visit on a regular basis. The furniture would be student-friendly.

The space would be open and flexible. The students could read an eBook, collaborate, watch a

video, use a flip cam, read a hardback book, plan a project, use Ed modo and more.

I am writing to request the $1,000 matching grant to be utilized for 12 cube seats and a 12 x 8

area rug. Tracy Shopmyer, the school's media specialist and Angie Veitch, Director of

Technology and Media have contributed to the planning ofthe Learning Commons. On

February 12, the HES PTA voted to provide the school with $1,000, if the matching grant is

approved. The PTA supports the funding of this project and they see it as a project that will

impact all K-5 students, along with supporting blended learning at Hillsborough Elementary

School.

Therefore, I request you to petition the school board for a $1,000 matching grant on our behalf.

Through our annual Read-A-Thon, the HES PTA has secured the required one thousand dollars

to meet the minimum requirement for a matching grant. This project will make a significant

impact on teaching and learning atHillsborough Elementary School.

Respectfully Submitted,

)L_f~~

Mr. Weber,

Could you please submit a request to Superintendent Rhodes for a matching grant on our

behalf? At the February PTA meeting, the PTA voted to support the goal of converting the

existing computer lab in the 3-5 grade building to a Learning Commons. Through the annual

Read-A-Than, the PTA has raised $1,000 to match the matching grant from the Board of

Education.

The PTA is pleased that the Board of Education has made such a strong commitment to

purchasing a device for each student in grades 3-5, beginning in 2013-2014. Purchasing new

equipment is one way to support student achievement. The PTA heard your vision for

developing a Learning Commons and we feel that a student-friendly environment that is

flexible, open, wireless, comfortable, inspiring, and practical will support student achievement.

As learning continues to change in elementary schools so do learning environments. We

believe that a Learning Commons will encourage communication, collaboration, creativity and a

place to develop new understandings. A Learning Commons will support multiple students and

will change how students approach learning.

The PTA is ready to provide the school with a check for $1,000 in order to purchase furniture

for the Learning Commons. Please let me know if the Board of Education approves this

request. Thank you for sharing the research on Learning Commons with the HES PTA. We

support your goal of designing an environment focused on the whole child, where learning is

maximized!

Sincerely,

RECEIVED Pathways Elementary chool 431 Strouds Creek Rd MAR 1 5 2013 Hillsborough, NC 2727

SUPT'S OFFICE March 8, 2013

Dear Board of Education and Pat Rhodes:

It is my understanding that the Pathways PTA has applied for the $1000.00 matching funds grant offered by the Orange County Board of Education. First, let me thank you for sponsoring such as wonderful program. I am writing you in support of the PTA's request. The current playground is often very wet after any kind of precipitation. Often students have indoor recess for several days after wet weather in order to allow the playground to dry out. A cement pad will allow the children to have a high and dry area to play on these days. In addition, a cement pad would give students a level surface to engage in organized student activities such as jumping rope and four square. The PTA has estimated the cost of the cement pad to be $7,000. A local paving company is donating their cost of labor which is estimated to be an approximate $3,000 savings. The PTA would use the matching funds grant in addition to the money raised this year to cover the remaining amount.

On behalf of the staff, students, and parents of Pathways, thank you for considering this request. If you have further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Connie L. Brimmer, Principal

Dear Board of Education and Pat Rhodes:

Pathways Elementary School 431 Strouds Creek Rd Hillsborough, NC 27278

March 8, 2013

Through the Orange C9unty Schools Board of Education Policy #8430 the Pathways PTA would like to request $1,000 matching funds for the purchase of materials that will provide a playground surface for students at Pathways. The current playground, after any precipitation, is too wet to allow the children to enjoy their recess outside. A pad constructed of concrete will improve the conditions and provide a high and dry area for the children to play on all school days.

The cost of this 50' x 50' concrete pad is estimated at $7,000. A local paving company is donating their labor costs to make this improvement. (Estimated cost of labor is $3,000.) The PTA will cover the $4000 cost of concrete with money earned in our 2012 Fall Fundraiser.

Thank you for your consideration in providing Pathways Elementary with $1000 through the Matching Funds Program. This project will benefit all of the Pathways' student population. It will be completed during Spring Break of this school year and will serve the children of Pathways for many years to come.

Sincerely,

We are requesting the Matching Funds Grant to support the following item funded by the A.l. Stanback

Band Booster Organization. The Band Booster Organization sponsored a fund raiser to raise money for

the band program. One of the primary purchases they plan to make is a% upright bass to be used with

concert and jazz bands at all grade levels. Additionally, this size upright bass is more ergonomically

appropriate for students of certain heights. This instrument has significant benefit for the students at

A.l. Stanback and the continued success of the band program. We are requesting the complete

reimbursement of $1,000 to go toward the cost of the upright bass.

We would like to take advantage of the matching grant that is offered from the County. The band would be purchasing a 3/4 upright bass that will be used with 6th, 7th and 8th grade bass players in concert band and jazz band to add depth of sound to our low brass section. By adding another bass to our band we would be able to allow for the current taller bass player in 6th grade to use the correct size bass during jazz and offer more opportunities for band students to play bass in the band.

SUPT'S OFFICE

This letter respectfully requests on behalf of the Orange High School's Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO) to receive the $1,000 grant for matching funds per board policy #8430.

Attached, please find: (1) Proposal submitted to me and presented to our School Improvement Team by Sandy

Chandler, OHS PTSO President; (2) Initial expenditures for benches & tables; (3) Product descriptions for benches & tables; (4) Request for Reimbursement for Matching Funds Form.

This is an amazing opportunity that brings our community members together for a long lasting and beneficial project to our student liody. It should be noted that this project will expand over more than one fiscal year and require additional funding which is outlined in the PTSO proposal.

Page 20: Meeting Date: March 25. 2013 13-03-(2)-08

Background:

OHS Courtyard Project Proposal

March 2013

The OHS PTSO would like to pursue improving the courtyard areas at OHS. Ideally we would like to work on all3 areas outlined below. Initially we met with Mr. Johnson and discussed

the options to work on one courtyard area, and were so encouraged by community

leaders support, we have begun to think of gathering a proposal together for work to be done on all three courtyard areas identified as well as try to tie some of the

beautification work/improvements to the 50th anniversary celebration for Orange High

which will take place in the 2013-14 school year. We see this project as a natural extension

of the project completed at C W Stanford- and hope for similar results in terms of funding and community involvement.

The committee members participating in the project thus far are listed below.

Several of the committee members were involved in the stormwater project at CWS*.

Key Ideas Discussed by committee: (from 2/14/13 initial meeting)

Courtyard #1 (east to west)- outside of guidance area

- landscape rocks -mulch

- sculpted art -covers to door suspension rods - power washing - native plantings - rain garden -entrance improvement (cinder blocks, railing, lights)

Courtyard #2 (current eating area for students)

- container plants - brick walls going up stairs (improve faces) - round tables & benches - deciduous trees on either side of entrance - painted murals -vegetable or native garden (if interest from Ag teachers)

Courtyard #3 (in between 300 and 400 wing)

- rain garden - repair Japanese bridge

Between Courtyards Facing Parking Lot - experimental masonry area? - determine purpose/needs -add plants Overall areas to address -drainage - adopt-a-garden or area for classes - check for long-term improvement conflicts - matching donations (including materials like mulch) - collaborate with teachers

We have also begun to gather comments from the students as well as the faculty. There is a

Page 22: Meeting Date: March 25. 2013 13-03-(2)-08

tri-fold poster board with photos of the proposed areas outside of Mr. Johnson's office, and we have asked the school community for their input on what they would like to see addressed.

We would like to involve the students as well as the staff at many levels to get their input and thoughts on what they would like to see in these three areas. We also see this as an opportunity to create some outdoor learning environments as well as areas to showcase student work.

We also have identified some potential outside funders/grants that we may consider applying to in order to augment this project. We plan it to be a multi-phase project which will be broken out into several distinct phases. Those phases are still being outlined at this time.

Thank you for your consideration. Sandy Chandler PTSO President
