Meet the new North East District Community Outreach Minister Dear Colleagues in the Ministry of Jesus Christ, I am very pleased to announce to you that Jim Young will be serving as the Community Outreach Minister in the North East District. Jim is a long-time Jacksonville resident, a long-time United Methodist serving as a member first at Lakewood UMC and now Crossroad UMC. Most important, Jim is a real-time follower of Jesus Christ who is led by the Spirit because he practices the daily and weekly spiritual disciplines that are central to the Methodist Way. He embodies a contagious passion for Jesus with a mature and disciplined Christian life. He has personally come alongside a number of persons and guided them into a relationship with Jesus Christ. As Community Outreach Minister, Jim will travel among the churches of our entire district, working with individual congregations and also co-operative congregations desiring to work collaboratively to share the gospel in a common mission field. Jim aptly describes his work as resourcing, coaching and empowering churches to practice a “balanced outreach of mercy, justice and evangelism.” Jim will be a powerful resource for you and your church because he personally lives the balanced life of mercy, justice and evangelism! Jim has served in the local church as a teacher, evangelism outreach leader and Church Council chairman. In the metro-Jacksonville area he has served on the boards of “Here’s Life” Inner Cit y, City Rescue Mission, and “Transform Jacksonville and NE Florida.” Several years ago his imagination was captured by a growing prayer ministry, originating in South Africa and moving across the continent of Africa, called the “Global Day of Prayer (GDOP).” God opened the way for Jim to travel to South Africa to participate in the GDOP. Jim brought that vision back to North East Florida, and the past two years have seen a new networking of ministers and priests and congregations across N. Florida, united in prayer and service to the community. Last May over 10,000 people gathered in Veteran’s Arena for a Pentecost GDOP celebration of praise and prayer, which was broadcast to an estimated 400 million Christians in 220 nations around the world. Our mission, individually and corporately, is “to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” Jim is on board to resource you in leading your congregation in its development of ministries of mercy, justice and witness. I hope you will welcome Jim and invite him to “your neck of the woods” soon. Contact Jim through the district office. Yours in faith and hope and love, Tim February 2012 Newsletter

Meet the new North East District Community Outreach Minister Dear Colleagues in the Ministry of Jesus Christ,

I am very pleased to announce to you that Jim Young will be serving as the Community Outreach Minister in the North East District.

In the metro-Jacksonville area he has served on the boards of “Here’s Life” Inner City, City Rescue Mission, and “Transform Jacksonville and NE Florida.” Several years ago his imagination was captured by a growing prayer ministry, originating in South Africa and moving across the continent of Africa, called the “Global Day of Prayer (GDOP).” God opened the way for Jim to travel to South Africa to participate in the GDOP. I hope you will welcome Jim and invite him to “your neck of the woods” soon. Contact Jim through the district office.

Yours in faith and hope and love,

Tim

NEW CHURCH DEVELOPMENT CORNER! Rev. Dr. Stephen R. Herbert, Exec. Director

“Scratchings on the Pulpit”

The widely respected Swiss theologian and pastor, Karl Barth, scratched on the inside of his pulpit the words, “That they might see Jesus!” to constantly remind himself that a preacher’s role isn’t to gain popularity, or to entertain, or to coddle, but to do one thing and one thing only: preach the sacrificial Love of Jesus Christ!

Our North East District Committee on New Church Development focused on this important reminder at our initial meeting for 2012 and is dedicated to maintain it as we manage current missions and new church starts as well as prepare for our new one coming this July.

Regardless of one’s thoughts about Rev. Barth’s theological insights, all who knew him were quick to point out that Karl Barth was known for being a Christ-centered man in his daily living and thinking as well as in his profound writings. If such an intently focused Christian was wise enough to appreciate the need to be constantly reminded of staying centered on Jesus, certainly it would be prudent for us to do the same. Please pray often for our New Church Development team’s guidance in Kingdom labors.

And the great everyday reminder for all of us is…

“That they might see Jesus!”

General Conference 2012 - April 24 through May 4, 2012 Hospitality Volunteers Needed

The Florida Conference will be hosting General Conference 2012 at the Tampa Convention Center, April 24 thru May 4. This conference brings together delegates from around the world who determine current and future policies of the United Methodist Church.

Under the leadership of Rev. Jim Harnish, the Florida Hospitality Team has been working to provide "a warm welcome" for the arrival of up to 5,000 delegates, visitors and guests. "We ask for everyone's support to meet the large need for volunteers to host this event".

This is a great opportunity to get your church members, ministry groups and committees involved. More information is available in the new resource "Toolkit" and Volunteer Recruitment DVD. The Toolkit CD and the DVD may be downloaded and are also available by calling 1.800.282.8011 x 197 or by emailing [email protected]. [Click here] for information and resources related to General Conference 2012.

Greetings,

My name is Lee Lallance, and I am the Mass Choir Coordinator for General Conference, which is being held at the Tampa Convention Center from Tuesday, April 24, 2012 through Friday, May 4, 2012. This is the gathering of United Methodist Bishops, delegates, and musicians from all over the world who come together every four years to make global decisions about the United Methodist Church. For many of us this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be involved at a world conference of this magnitude.

I am writing to ask if you and your choir would be interested in participating in the opening ceremonies of General Conference. Outstanding composers have been commissioned to write the opening choral and orchestral music, and our hopes are to have a 350 voice choir and orchestra for this world event.

The opening of the General Conference will happen at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at the Tampa Convention Center with a rehearsal prior in the late morning and a run through in the afternoon (exact time still to be decided).

The music is almost complete and shortly I can send you the anthems which can be reproduced for your singers.

Please consider participating in this fabulous event which won't be held close to us again for quite some time. Please let me know as soon as possible if you and your choir are willing to participate and I will make sure you have the appropriate music and information to make this a huge success.

Thanks for considering this great opportunity. Rev. Lee Lallance [email protected] Minister of Music and Fine Arts cell (863) 409-7565

DLC Nurse & Learn News

LET DLC BE YOUR LOCAL MISSION PROJECT IN 2012!

If your church is considering a local mission project in 2012, we invite you to adopt DLC Nurse & Learn. For 22 years we have partnered with area churches and provided child care services, therapies and support to families that have a child with a disability or serious medical condition. We are a child care ministry for children with special needs that cares for more than 120 children per year. DLC is also an outreach ministry of the Northeast District of the United Methodist Church We are supported by approximately 20 churches on a regular basis and receive donations from various agencies in the community. This year our goal is to raise awareness to continue to help families in need. There are many ways in which you can help, including donating your time, talents and money. You can also “Adopt a Child” by personally donating to their care and therapy. Additionally, your Sunday school or church group could pool their resources. Each member can make a small donation each month to meet the goal of raising between $100-$500 to cover child care, nursing and therapies for one child. ($10 x 12 members x 12 months = a scholarships for one child for a year.)

We will share each child’s progress and achievements as well as photos and invite your group to special events. Please call Amy Buggle at (904) 387-0370 for more information on how to get involved.

DLC GOLF TOURNAMENT

DLC Nurse & Learn is preparing for its 13th Annual Golf Tournament. This year we are looking forward to hosting groups of golfers as well as volunteers at the Deercreek Country Club. The tournament will be Sunday, April 22, at 1:30 p.m.

Our golf tournament is hosted annually to help raise funds for DLC’s scholarship fund. Last year, DLC gave away more scholarships than ever before. With the downturn in the economy, families are struggling to make ends meet and to pay for basic necessities, including child care.

We invite you to join us in making this tournament the most successful ever! Please consider being a sponsor, volunteer or golfer. The gift of your time and resources will make such a difference to our families! Sponsorship levels are as follows: Platinum $5,000, Gold $1,000, Silver $500 and hole sponsors are $300. If you are interested in sponsoring or simply golfing to support our mission, please call the office. We anticipate having great prizes, fellowship and fun!
