THE FORESTExperience a life-changing trek to see the world’s largest primate - the mountain gorilla.Nothing can quite compare to a close encounter with a troop of mountain gorillas, who inhabit the often mist-shrouded Virunga Volcanoes on the borders of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. A guided trek to see them is an unforgettable experience and one of the most popular areas for trekking is Rwanda’s Parc National des Volcans.

Tiny, landlocked Rwanda is incredibly beautiful and its primeval forests also harbour an array of other interesting primates. Purchase a second gorilla trekking permit to spend another magical hour with these unique and highly endangered great apes (please note that limited permits are available and must be arranged well in advance). Alternatively, extend a gorilla trek with a stay in Nyungwe Forest National Park, where chimpanzees and colobus monkeys can be found.

ITINERARYDay 1

Parc National des Volcans

Arrive in the clean, orderly Rwandan capital Kigali on a morning flight. Enjoy a city tour taking in various interesting landmarks such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre, followed by lunch. A 2-hour drive in the afternoon takes you to the luxurious Bisate Lodge, located within easy driving distance of Park Headquarters from where gorilla treks depart daily. Accommodation at this property is offered in sumptuous suites set inside thatched, rounded chalets containing every conceivable luxury.

The ultra-chic main areas comprise of a stylish lounge warmed by a stone fireplace, an inviting bar area flanked by a well-stocked wine cellar as well as indoor and outdoor dining spaces. LD

Day 2

Parc National des Volcans

Expect an early depature this morning (6:15am) to Park headquarters where you’ll begin making your way through dense vegetation in search of mountain gorillas.

Treks may last as little as half an hour or go on for up to 3 hours depending on where a troop is located. Once found, trekkers may spend a maximum of one hour observing and photographing the gentle giants. Return to the lodge for lunch with free time in the afternoon for relaxed bird-watching in the lodge’s beautiful gardens. You could also take a guided walk through thick bamboo forests in search of the striking golden monkey. Other places you can hike to include the tomb of Dian Fossey, a primatologist who dedicated her life to the conservation of mountain gorillas. BLD

Kigali

Enjoy an optional second gorilla trek or visit the local village of Kinigi for an insight into traditional culture. Leave the lodge after lunch, arriving at the well-appointed Kigali Serena Hotel in central Kigali in time for dinner. BLD
