Why should members vote for you?

Having been a member of the District Executive Council for the last three years, I know it’s most

important to keep the members’ needs first. We are here to help members to realize their potential.

We can do that by providing a positive learning experience through regular educational events that

are current, transferrable and fun. We want every club member to see the value of stepping up to

taking on District service and how doing that helps the District to “level up.” It’s a positive experience

all around.

As a President’s Distinguished Area Director, I learned the value and the importance of relationships.

As a President’s Distinguished Northern Division Director and Division Director of the Year, I learned

to motivate and encourage a team. As Club Growth Director, I realize the value of establishing strong

quality clubs. We want to establish clubs that will be around for a long time.

I am organized, timely and keep open lines of communication. Those are important qualities to have

as a district officer.

Is there anything else you would like members to know about you?

I have degrees in Finance, Chemistry and Clinical Nutrition. I own my own business and in my

business, I function as a manual therapist, nutritionist, corrective exercise specialist and life coach.

I’m the proud owner of two Australian Shepherds. Dragon is retired from working sheep and Seamus

will start competing at agility trials next year.

(1) As Club Growth Director I would be honored to again serve our esteemed District 5 for you with

the passion that I have already demonstrated as Area Director 33 and Central Division Director.

In these offices, I have witnessed the benefits and unique diversity of many San Diego clubs by

being a member of 10 San Diego clubs. I have watched San Diego and Yuma members growth

in career and life skills over the years. By empowering myself to step up to open speaking slots, I

received my DTM in 2.3 year. My passion was further recognized when I received the “Making

the Difference Award” as Area Director 33 in 2017. We need to charter more clubs and prepare

the officers for future leadership in their clubs and career to become a more visible

organization. As a Scientist, I work smart, strategically and analytically at setting goal I have

developed a Strategic Program or District 5 Club Growth, some of which I have already

implemented in preparing for the Club Growth Director position.

(2) Every year we have over a thousand new members, many becoming officers within a year. I

believe we need a NEW CLUB OFFICER EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM which teaches a stronger

mentoring/sponsoring/coaching training program to build stronger leadership skills within these

new clubs. Key is motivating and inspiring the new club officers to keep the current clubs afloat

and keep building membership ALWAYS.

(3) Members who know me know I am a creative person and have come up with new ideas on lead

clubs. I have been to many locations to speak with managers and field whether there is interest

in starting new clubs.

(4) I want to include an CLUB GROWTH Outreach Program to charter new clubs that do not

currently have a voice. I have visited Enrichment Managers in Senior homes and want to

additionally include challenged individuals to provide them a voice through Toastmasters.

(5) As Central Division Director, I have a fantastic team of empowered Area Directors motivating,

inspiring, building clubs membership and helping their clubs see that vision of being

Distinguished. I want to continue to empower individuals at all levels.

(6) I am putting together an empowered team and together we will help the District add more new

clubs than losses.

Is there anything else you would like members to know about you? I addition to being a scientist, I own and manage 5 properties where my Toastmaster skills come in handy. Toastmasters has taught me to be more efficient by not worrying. Jim Tucker would say, just do it so you can say “I did”. I view Toastmasters as a fun way to learn practical leadership and communication skills, but you learn so much more. I have met so many wonderful Toastmaster friends not only in San Diego, but in other states and countries at their club meetings and the International Conference. We celebrate our achievements and support and encourage each other along the way. If members have additional questions can they contact you? Yes Email address: [email protected]

• Vice President, Education (July 2015 – June 2017)

• Vice President, Public Relations (July 2013 – June 2015)

• Joined Toastmasters August 2011

Why should members vote for you? I joined Toastmasters in 2011 to practice my speaking and speech writing skills. But, I’ve learned so much more: Leadership. Fellowship. Volunteerism. The value of stepping up within an organization to make a difference. At the club level, I’ve held the positions of Vice President of Education and Public Relations, hosted a few open houses and contests, started a club e-bulletin, participated in the Evaluation Contest, and mentored new members. I started on the District leadership path last year after listening to the 2017 keynote speaker. He spoke so passionately about being an Area Director and how that position makes such a difference to a club, I was inspired to submit my application for the Area 22 Director role. And over the last nine months, I’ve found his comments to be true – it is rewarding to help other clubs pursue their DCP. Plus, I’ve had the opportunity to chair the 2018 Inland Division Contest and teach classes about the Public Relations role at officer training. My background is in Human Resource Management, Project Management, Communications and Volunteerism. Over the last seven years, I’ve worked in the non-profit sector on membership, fundraising, coordinating volunteers, and events. Recently, I moved into a completely different field, procurement. Together, this experience has helped to hone skills relevant to a Division Director, such as, how to collaborate as a team, effectively communicate across a diverse group, and successfully facilitate projects and events.

What it really boils down to is this – I’ve so enjoyed the Toastmasters experience, from both a club and a district level, I want to continue giving back to and supporting this wonderful organization as the Inland Division Director. Is there anything else you would like members to know about you? I believe in a consultative approach – meeting with and listening to understand what is and is not working and what the group wants to achieve. Then, I can help them develop a game plan that fits their style and level of commitment. There is not the proverbial one size fits all answer. Each club, area and division has a different personality and target audience. My role is to help develop their own insight into what works best for them. The district did not meet the District Leadership Committee (DLC) requirement or the 4 weeks prior

notice of the elections. Therefore, all candidates along with any floor candidates will be nominated from

the floor and each will have the opportunity to give a 2-3 min speech.

Protocol 9.0: District Campaigns and Elections

11. Elections A. The district director or a person designated by the district director explains the election

rules and procedures to the delegates.

B. The DLC chair shall present the committee’s report. In the chair’s absence, the district director designates another member of the DLC, when practicable, to present the report. The chair or designee announces the names of the committee members and reads the name of each nominated candidate, in alphabetical order, for each of the offices of district director, program quality director, club growth director and division directors. The area directors, public relations manager, administration manager, finance manager are also announced if elected.

C. If any policy violations by a candidate have occurred, the DLC chair may disclose that violation and may announce whether the violation could have affected the candidate’s nomination.

D. For each office, the district director inquires whether there are additional nominations from the floor.

I. Floor candidates must be nominated by a member of the district council or their proxyholder. Floor candidates may self-nominate when they are a member of the district council or a proxyholder.

II. Floor candidates or, in their absence, their representatives state their eligibility qualifications.

III. Floor candidates for district director, program quality director, club growth director, and division director must sign the Officer Agreement and Release Statement prior to the election. Only the Officer Agreement and Release Statement of those elected are sent to World Headquarters.

IV. The district director may declare any proven floor candidate policy violations to the district council.

V. When nominations are complete, the district director declares the nominations for that office closed.

E. After nominations are closed, candidate speeches are given. A candidate speaks on his or her own behalf. If a candidate is not present, an authorized representative may speak for the candidate. If there is only one candidate nominated, no speech is given.

F. A candidate’s representative may not be a member of the district executive committee, a member of the DLC, the credentials chair, or any other meeting official, unless he or she resigns before the district council’s annual meeting begins.

Page 12: MEET THE CANDIDATES - District 5 Toastmastersd5tm.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/MEET-THE-CANDIDATESREV6… · 2014-2015: President--Encinitas Toastmasters Why should members vote

G. The balloting for each office takes place immediately following candidate speeches. The number of votes that a member may cast is governed by Article X, Section (e) of the District Administrative Bylaws.

H. After nominations for an office are closed, if there is only one candidate for the office, the district director may entertain a motion to dispense with the secret ballot for the uncontested office or instruct the administration manager to cast a single ballot for the candidate.

I. District officer candidates are responsible for appointing one observer to monitor the integrity of the voting and ballot counting process.

J. Each election is completed and the winner announced before moving to the subsequent election.

K. Candidates nominated for one office and not elected to the office may be nominated from the floor for subsequent offices.

L. Any candidate who receives a majority of the votes cast is declared elected. In the event no candidate receives a majority of the votes cast for a contested office, voting continues with the use of special ballots and without the name of the candidate receiving the fewest votes. Such a procedure continues until one of the candidates receives a majority of the votes cast.

M. Upon adjournment of the district council’s annual meeting, all election results are final. Results of the election are displayed on the district website as soon as possible following adjournment of the meeting.

N. All proxies and ballots are retained for 24 hours following the close of the meeting for review only by the district director or district credentials chair, as necessary, and immediately thereafter destroyed by the district director or district credentials chair.
