MEET OUR NEW PASTORAL ADMINISTRATOR
Rev. Richard M. Erikson, Ph.D.
When did you know you wanted to be a priest? It took seven years from the time I first thought the Lord may be calling me to be a priest until the time I finally surrendered to God’s will. I first visited St. John’s Seminary in Brighton in 1976 when I was in high school. I visited again when I was in college. After college I wanted some experience in the “real world.” After a year and a half of working in the Mystic Valley area on a nursing home program, I decided it was time to see if what I was feeling was real. The longest journey of my life was the three mile ride from my parents’ home in Watertown to St. John’s Seminary in Brighton! It wasn’t until two years into seminary when I finally and definitively surrendered to God. This month I will celebrate my 33rd anniversary. The joy of priesthood and ministry continues to grow.
Who or what was the biggest influence when coming to this decision? When you see me, you see my parents. My mother was a wonderful Catholic woman, and my father is a World War II hero. Because of their influence and example, I became a Catholic priest and a military chaplain. Also, Fr. Lenny O’Malley was a newly ordained priest at my home parish of St. Luke’s in Belmont when I was a teenager. He would bring Holy Communion to my grandmother, who was living with us and who was very ill at the end of her life. In Fr. O’Malley’s visits I saw the beauty of the priesthood and of the Eucharist. I was very active in our teen group at the parish, so it is so great to be part of a parish now with such a vibrant teen program. Do you have brothers and sisters? My two sisters and my brother are heroes. Each of them embodies courage. Deb just celebrated the ten year anniversary of Coastal Connections, an agency she co-founded to serve people with multiple disabilities. She lives the Gospel and the mysteries of the Rosary. Carol has accomplished great things in her career, but more than that, she is an amazing mother. As an uncle and one who does not have children, my two nieces and three nephews are very special to me. My sisters have been exceptionally generous in sharing family life with me. My nieces and nephews range in age from 4 to 33. My brother, Ed, has faced great adversity in life and has done so with great grace and courage. I aspire to have the depth of faith, hope and love of Ed, Deb and Carol.
Tell us about your military service. One of my favorite passages of scripture is John 15:13: There is no greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. This is one thing every member of the military has in common: willingness to lay down her or his life for us. It was a great privilege to serve in the chaplain corps for 35 years: 28 years in the reserve and 7 years of active duty. I retired from military service in May 0f 2017, so this has been my first year as a veteran. My oldest nephew is serving active duty Navy, so my father raised a family with three generations of military service: Father, son and grandson. What do you do in your leisure time? I love music, almost all kinds of music. I love powerful vocalists and great songs. One of the great joys of my life was to become friends with Andy Williams (Moon River, The Most Wonderful Time of the Year) and to write booklets (liner notes) for a number of his CDs and boxsets. I even was the associate producer on one CD. I had one project with Bobby Vinton (Blue Velvet). I love going to concerts. Often when I hear a love song, I think about God’s love for us.
What has it been like for you at St. Mary since you arrived in April? People have been extremely welcoming and gracious. I heard a lot about what a great parish St. Mary is, and now I am getting to experience that. I love our worship. I love how active our parish is. I love the energy and mission of our school. I hope our parishioners will agree with my assessment of “so far, so good.” And in the words of a Carpenters’ song, which Andy Williams covered, “We’ve only just begun.” More information about Fr. Erikson can be found at http://www.stmary-winchester.org/father-richard-erikson/ which includes links to his Air Force biography and music credits.

World Refugee Day is an expression of solidarity with people
who have been uprooted from their homes by war or
persecution. Did you know that at least 65.6 million people—
1 of every 113 members of the human family– have been
forcibly displaced within their own countries or across
borders? Every minute 20 people leave everything behind to
escape war, persecution or terror.
Join the RIM Walk for Refugees!

Refugee Immigration Ministry (RIM) is an interfaith,
community-based organization that has served hundreds of
asylum seekers and refugees in MA since its founding in 1986.
This event will ensure that asylum seekers living in nearby
communities have housing, food and access to English
language tutoring until they can provide for themselves.
St. Mary Peace and Justice Ministry thanks you in advance for
pledging or registering online to support the metro-west
cluster: www.r-i-m.net.
Promoting the Gospel Collection June 16/17
This week’s second collection Promoting the Gospel
supports Catholic Campaign for Human Development
(CCHD) and the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC).
Through the work of CCDH and CCC, the Gospel is
promoted by supporting those in poverty, providing grants to
community-based groups and using the entire array of media
tools available today to evangelize and promote Gospel
values. For more information about these organizations,
please visit:

While this collection supports national efforts, a portion of
the proceeds are designated for local CCHD grants and parish
communication efforts.
Catholic Appeal Update
Thank you to our wonderful parishioners for your
tremendous support of the Cardinal’s Appeal. As of
today, St. Mary Parish has achieved 97% of raising
$120,551. Your generosity supports the mission of the
Archdiocese and directly benefits St. Mary’s. If we
achieve our goal, St. Mary’s receives a significant rebate
from the Archdiocese of Boston. Last year, this totaled
over $31,000. Those funds allow us to ease our budget
and are put to good use in a number of capacities.
Please consider contributing to the Catholic Appeal, as
we are just shy of the $5,000 needed to receive a full
rebate. There are blue Catholic Appeal envelopes at the
doors of the church, or you can make your pledge
directly at www.bostoncatholicappeal.org.
Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
This parable about the mustard seed is a reminder to us
about our role in the work of evangelization. “The
smallest of all the seeds on the earth, but once it is sown,
it springs up and becomes the largest of plants.” Many
shy away from sharing their faith with others. But with
one person who shares… it is this kind of evangelization
that will build the Kingdom of God: Stories of God
working in our lives, of prayers asked for and answered,
of feeling the presence of Jesus. Share the “mustard
seed” of your faith and watch to see how it will grow!
Mark the Date!
On Friday, June 29, there will be a special Mass at
9:15am in the upper church to conclude The Beauty and
the Least Bible Camp. Exposition of the Blessed
Sacrament will precede the Mass at 9am in the lower
church. All are welcome.

THANK YOU!!!
To our wonderful parishioners, thank you for your
prayers, support and financial assistance. Each year our
teens share their experiences with you at Mass (like they
did last weekend), and each year your generosity of spirit
makes this all the more possible. Thank you for always
being there for us. We are blessed by your care for us!
If you would like to make a donation to help defray
the costs of each teen participating (approx. $900/
person), you may mail a donation to:

To make online donations, please visit our website at:

As you know 30 of our parish teens along with Sal
and our volunteer chaperones, will be participating in a
one week service retreat to Washington, DC on July 8. It
is an awesome experience in which our teens minister to
people with many disadvantages: The homeless, refugee
children, immigrants and persons with developmental
disabilities. Please keep them all in your prayers. Thank
you!
Open Enrollment
Open enrollment is still available for the 2018-2019 school
year at St. Mary School of Winchester. We are now
registering students in Pre-K—Grade 5. St. Mary School
provides opportunities for every child to develop his or her
potential, intellectually, spiritually, socially and emotionally,
in a secure, caring and stimulating environment. St. Mary
School nurtures and educates young children and develops a
strong academic, faith-filled foundation for our students to
become compassionate, responsible Catholic citizens. For
more information call 781/729-5515 or take a look at our
website at www.stmaryswinchester.org.
Online and Envelope Giving—Our parish is blessed with extraordinarily generous parishioners and with a parish staff,
parish council and finance councils who are great stewards of our resources. We encourage you to consider online giving as a
means of contributing to the weekly offertory and/or the Grand Annual collection. This means of giving is convenient for our
parishioners and efficient for the parish. It is also a wonderful way for you to assist in the ministry and expenses when you are
away. You can set up recurring donations on a weekly or monthly basis, or you can give on a non-recurring (single pay) basis.
Go to www.stmary-winchester.org and scroll down to the green Online Giving icon at the bottom of the page to enroll. If you
receive parish giving envelopes at home but do not use them, please call the Parish Office to let us know, and we will
discontinue the mailing of the envelopes to you. We pay the vendor for the use of weekly envelopes, so this will save us the
cost of the envelopes as well as the mailing. Of course if you prefer cash or check donations or the weekly envelopes, then it is
fine and wonderful for you to continue contributing in this way! We are so very grateful for your generosity, and we are
dedicated to making sure we maximize your donations.

Today’s Reflection
Today we celebrate Father’s Day, honoring our fathers,
stepfathers, grandfathers, godfathers, uncles and all those
who have acted as fathers in our lives. How fortunate are
we if we had or have a father who is like the majestic cedar
described in the first reading, providing comfort and
protection for all those in its care. Whatever our own
circumstances, we can look to God our Almighty Father, as
the ideal of a fostering, loving, forgiving parent.
