1.What can you buy with $US 1.25 (a day) in your

hometown?

To comply with Bangladesh’s reality, therespondent group assumed $US 1.25 to be thedaily income of a person who has a familyconsisting of 5 members. As food is the most

important basic need, the group, at first, focusedon how much money should be spent to feed allthe five mouths to meet their daily minimumcalorie-requirements. It was found that, nearlyTk.65 must be spent on rice, and this leaves verylittle scope for them to spend on other items thatmake the meals tastier, let alone spending onother basic needs (e.g. on education, clothing,medicine etc.)

According to the respondents, the rearranged list couldbe like the following:

Goal 3: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases

Goal 5: Develop a Global Partnership for Development

3.Which human rights in the UDHR are NOT

covered by the MDGs?

According to the respondent group, the following human

rights should be included in the targets of the MDGs.

1. HR No. 6,7- which demand that law should be equal for

everyone.

2. HR No. 9,10,11- which demand that every suspectshould go under fair public trial. No punishment should

be imposed until guilt is proved.

3. HR No. 22- which demand that social security should be

ensured and more opportunities should be provided todevelop skills.

4. HR No. 17,29- which demand that security of both

private and public properties should be ensured.



4. If you were the leader of your country, how

would you include human rights in the MDGs?

According to the respondents, if they were theleaders of Bangladesh, they would have analyzedevery demand from the commoners, regardinghuman rights, very carefully and critically. This is

because they think that when a particular humanright is viewed from the commoners’ point of focus, it might prove to be a selfish demandwhich might be inconsistent with the countries’

overall welfare. Again, they emphasized onmaking decisions that benefit the whole countryas well as ensure the proper enforcement of human rights.



5. What is one thing you can do to make the

MDGs real?

According to the respondents, one thing thatthey can do, to make the MDGs real, is tospread more awareness among the mass

regarding the MDGs. For this, they plan toconduct more promotional activities and atthe same time, they hope to developthemselves in a way, so that they could be

able to find out their own setbacks and try toimprove themselves in order to make morecontributions in achieving the MDGs.
