The Heritage leadership team is excited to announce that Arkansas Bishop Gary Mueller has appointed LaToya Shepherd to Heritage as an associate minister. She will serve as our Outreach Pastor with primary responsibilies for leading us in missions and evangelism (Witness Cornerstone). She will also help in planning and leading worship, teaching and preaching, and other areas of pastoral ministry. She begins at Heritage on July 1 st . Details of this appointment are sll being worked out by our District Superintendent, Rev. Stephen Coburn. LaToya was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan and moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas in August 2007. She has three children: Christa Marie (20), Rachel Jenay (18) and Leonard Jonathan (16). She earned a Bachelors Degree in Family Life Educaon from Spring Arbor University in Spring Arbor, Michigan and is pursuing a Masters of Divinity degree. Currently, she is pastor of Mission United Methodist Church in Fort Smith. LaToya has served in ministry for over 20 years in various capacies, including 16 years as clergy spouse, assistant to the pastor, worship leader, Sunday school teacher, youth leader and workshop speaker. LaToya came to the United Methodist Church in 2010 through an invitaon to a United Methodist Womens event and entered the candidacy process in 2012. LaToyas favorite scripture is Psalm 23. Meet LaToya Shepherd, Our New Outreach Pastor!

The Heritage leadership team is excited to announce that Arkansas Bishop Gary

Mueller has appointed LaToya Shepherd to Heritage as an associate minister. She will

serve as our Outreach Pastor with primary responsibilities for leading us in missions

and evangelism (Witness Cornerstone). She will also help in planning and leading

worship, teaching and preaching, and other areas of pastoral ministry. She begins at

Heritage on July 1st. Details of this appointment are still being worked out by our

District Superintendent, Rev. Stephen Coburn.

LaToya was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan and moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas in

August 2007. She has three children: Christa Marie (20), Rachel Jenay (18) and

Leonard Jonathan (16). She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Family Life Education from Spring Arbor University

in Spring Arbor, Michigan and is pursuing a Master’s of Divinity degree. Currently, she is pastor of Mission

United Methodist Church in Fort Smith.

LaToya has served in ministry for over 20 years in various capacities, including 16 years as clergy spouse,

assistant to the pastor, worship leader, Sunday school teacher, youth leader and workshop speaker. LaToya

came to the United Methodist Church in 2010 through an invitation to a United Methodist Women’s event

and entered the candidacy process in 2012.

LaToya’s favorite scripture is Psalm 23. Her favorite song is “His Eye is On the Sparrow”. She loves “ministry

work” and feels a distinct call to minister to women, children, clergy spouses and those who are considered

“less fortunate”. She enjoys reading, writing, teaching, singing, crocheting and bargain shopping.

CHILDREN’S CAMP Children's camp is an exciting time

of fellowship and faith building at

Pinecrest camp in Ozone! The

children will play games, swim, play

night games and have Bible

teachings. They will develop closer

relationships with each other and

their leaders! Camp is for children

entering grades 3-5 this fall! The

cost is $75. Registration forms are

available at the check-in stations

and in the Great Hall!

What is the connection between The Power Puff Girls,

Austin Powers and my baby sister, Joanne? The real

answer… nothing. As it pertains to softball the answer

is either Mojo JoJo, Mojo or just JoJo. Mojo JoJo is the

super villain that torments the Power Puff Girls into

action to stop his evil plans. MoJo is Austin Powers

special charm and good fortune that helps him deflate

Dr. Evil’s sinister plans. JoJo is the nickname for my

younger sister by six years, Joanne. Joanne still

reminds me I need to do penance for my actions in our

youth. She is still scarred from the day I turned her

door knob around, picked her up, put her in her room

then, and locked her inside. The connection to the

men’s softball team Tuesday is that our boys lost their

Mojo. For the first time in 5 seasons our Halo men lost two games on the same night. Game one Grace Church

won 8-7. Beyond Black dimmed the glow on our Halos

and beat us 14-9.

Our Co-ed teams had all the Mojo Friday, May 5th

winning two games. Game one they took care of the

Bat Breakers 13-2 despite Josie not knowing any Grey’s

Anatomy trivia. Then our Halos hit their way to victory

9-7 versus Red Classic in game two. Payton, Ande,

Madison, Chandler, Josie accounted for 2/3 of the

offense either scoring runs or with RBI’s. These girls hit

the ball hard highlighted by a line drive hit by Madison

caught by Red Classic shortstop. He removed his glove

and shook out the pain in his hand. Jason, Terry and

Chris were productive as usual aided by big hits by

Michael and Brandon. Game two our Co-ed Heroes

were stunned when their leader and coach took a bag of

30 coins of silver and fled to play for the opposing team,

Red Classic. Despite Red classic knowing all the Halo secrets they persevered and pulled off a defensive

victory in Red’s final at bat.

Chapters and Pages Well…here we are once again! Whether you are a part of the “school system” or not, most would agree that the transition from May to June brings about much change. It is the season for graduations, weddings, new places to live, summer vacations, and the list goes on. For some in their journey, it is new words, sentences or paragraphs that are to be written; for others it is a new page or even a new chapter that they are about to script out. In all of these ways, change is inevitable; it is a part of life.

So, what is it for you? Whether it is the change of a season or even just a normal change from one day to the next, I am often reminded of the word “new”. The word “new” is mentioned many times in the Bible. The following are several ways “new” is mentioned in the Word that strikes a chord with me:

A New Day: “A new day will dawn on us from above because our God is loving and merciful.” (Luke 1:78)

A New Self: “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” (Ephesians 4:22-24)

A New Creation: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Corinthians 5:17)

A New Song: “Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth.” (Psalm 96:1)

New Mercies: “Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:21-22)

A New Thing: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland” (Isaiah 43:18-19)

A New Heaven and Earth: “See, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.” (Isaiah 65:17)

God is all about creating something new. Are you ready for something new? God doesn’t look at yesterday and say, “That was good enough…let’s remain the same!” He sees the past as a means to something greater in the future. He sent His one and only Son for something great for you and me for

all eternity: complete restoration and life with Him! Oh, what a “new” day that will be! Until then, make “new” a part of your every day. Whether it be a new self or a new song, let God motivate you to move forward and toward the new chapters and pages that will be written in your story as a part of His story!
