    11/13

(Insiders Guide To The Art of Persuasion Contd)A FEW KEY IDEAS:

What motivates people (including you!) to change their minds, change their behav-ior, change their lives? The simple answer is fear and desire. Desire pulls us to-wards what we do want. Fear pushes us away from what we dont want. Accord-ing the Kirschner Model of Motivation, there are six motivations, and each of themhas a fear side and a desire side.

People dont think logically most the time. When we are busy, overwhelmed, orafraid, we look and listen for cues about whether or not to be persuaded, and

make decisions based on those signals instead of the facts. We think emotionally.

One of the best ways to persuade others is with your ears, by listening. Listeningallows you to gain access to the deeper structure behind the surface words andideas. Listening allows you to build trust, to signal understanding, and to FINDTHE MAP! The MAP consists of Motivations, access, and positions. Learn toquickly understand a person's true interests and needs and then shape your ideasto speak to those interests and meet those needs.

There are many ways to deal with questions, criticism, objections and respond tooutright opposition. In a group situation, one of the simplest is to repeat thequestion, then reframe it, and answer the question you want to answer.

You can be calm, confident and relaxed when speaking up and speaking out toothers. You can do this with your breath, your hands, your feet, and the words yousay to yourself. Anyone can learn to change their state and be present whenspeaking to persuade.

Dealing with groups persuasively is best accomplished when there are some

ground rules in place about how people are to conduct themselves while in thegroup. The result is less difficulty, more cooperation, and most importantly, theprocess of working together leads to positive and worthwhile outcomes insteadof anger and frustration.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: HOW TO CLICK WITH PEOPLE:

THE SECRET TO BETTER RELATIONSHIPS IN BUSINESS AND IN LIFE

Some people you just click with. The connection is quick and easy. They get you, you get

them. Communication flows. You could tell them anything, and theyd know just what you mean.

When you click, you feel truly seen, heard and understood -- accepted and appreciated for who

you really are. You get this person -- and they get you. The best and deepest human connec-

tions stem from there. Clicking makes our relationships satisfying and meaningful.

Click. It makes marriages, forms friendships, bonds brothers. It seals deals, wins elec-

tions, sells sneakers. It gets you the job, gets you promoted, gets you a date, even gets you out of

the dog house. It makes the world your oyster, keeps options on the table and opens doors for

    you.

If youre like most people, you think clicking is an instantaneous thing, that it either hap-

pens or it doesnt. Maybe you believe that theres a handful of people in this world who you can

click with -- and then theres everybody else. You might think that no matter how much youre

interested in certain people, your relationship is just not ever going to get in that groove of

    connection.

Youd be wrong. You can learn to click. You can make click happen.

Whether the times are great, or the economy is in the tank, the people who overcome

obstacles, prosper and advance, are those who know that understanding people is the key. Youcan build connections quickly and then develop them as deeply as you desire! Its just a matter

of understanding what makes people tick, and then knowing what to do and how to do it.

Become an insider to the way people put together their worldview, and you gain an ad-

vantage. You can work better with others and get better results. You can develop stronger

partnerships and teams. You can have a higher quality exchange of ideas and information, re-

solve interpersonal problems and play a bigger part in what goes on around you. Best of all, you

can build real relationships, the kind that last a lifetime.

Clicking doesnt just happen between individuals. It happens on teams, in councils and

boards. It is needed for leaders to lead, and teams to succeed. Knowing how to click puts you in

prime position to play a larger part in every situation where others are involved, and where

something greater than what you can do on your own is the desired result.
