Where? Sharpsburg, Maryland
Who was in charge ? General McClellan
Who won ? There was no clear winner because General Lee withdrew back to Virginia but General McClellan said that it was a victory for the Union.
Casualties : The Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest day of the war.2,108 Union soldiers were killed and 9,549 were wounded.2,700 Confederates were killed and 9,029 were wounded.Details : The battle convinced the British and French to reserve action. Also, it gave president Lincoln a chance to say his Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation which would free all the slaves rebelling against the United States . It was in affect on January 1,1863.

Who was in charge ? General Ulysses GrantWho won ? The Union won after the Confederates retreated.Casualties : Many soldiers died. 13,000 out of 63,000 Union soldiers diedAnd 11000 out of 40000 Confederates died.Details: The federal soldiers were almost defeated . Luckily reinforcements arrived. Soon the Union commanded the field and the Confederates retreated.

Who was in charge ? General MeadeWho won? General MeadeCasualties: Many people died . After the fight General Lee retreated to Virginia.
Details : General Meade had better defensive positions and more soldiers so he won. However, he did not follow General Lee when he retreated to Virginia.
President Lincoln’s AssassinationApril 14,1865
Where ? At Fords Theater in Washington D.CWho was in charge? John Wilkes Booth was in charge for assassinating Lincoln.Who won ?No one actually won because Booth was shot after he killed Lincoln. Casualties: Booth, Lincoln , and four other people that helped with the assassination died while the other four were imprisoned. Details: Not only John Wilkes Booth killed president Lincoln but nine other people also helped him . Four were hung while the other four went to jail.
