MMS Student Council: It is time to begin thinking about and planning for our Annual MMS Food Drive! I am looking for students who would be wil l ing to help plan and prepare for this awesome event. The Food Drive is an all school service to our 5 towns' food banks. The communities depend upon our Food Drive to help provide needed food items to stock their shelves right before the Thanksgiving holiday. Our first meeting wil l be October 6 (Tuesday) at 6:45 AM . There wil l be a sign up sheet in the office AND in the Blue Wing Room 208, see Mrs. Robinson. October 30 –Halloween Dance (Kick off to Food Drive)

If you have not returned your child's free and reduced lunch application, please do so ASAP. A new one needs to be filled our each year. Make sure to complete all sections, listing the names of all household members and their income. If you are not sure whether your child has qualified for free or reduced lunch, please contact the kitchen manager at your child's school or the food service director at 785-2277 ext. 241. Every Monday morning and Thursday afternoon a low and negative lunch balance message is sent out. You can receive this message via email, text, or phone call. You may choose how you want to receive this message. If you decide not receive it at all, you will also not be able to receive any other messages that might come through the messenger system. To make changes regarding how you wish to receive your messages or to stop receiving the low balance message, please contact your school secretary. Keep in mind, however you choose to receive the messages pertaining to your child's lunch account is the same way you will receive other school messages. If you have any food service related questions, feel free to call 785-2277 ext 241.

GOOD NEWS! Tables and exhibit spaces are available for this year’s MMS Craft Fair! The event, which continues to grow each year, is Saturday, November 7th 9am~3pm. Physical Education Welcome back to MMS everyone. I hope your settling into the school year. In case you’re not aware yet, we have completed some baseline fitness testing to get some numbers on where students are coming into the year fitness wise. We are currently playing tennis in our classes. Students will be practicing forehand, backhand and some serving skills. They will also start learning how to score a game of tennis. Call us at 832-‐5205 or visit our website at www.msad40.maineadulted.org Beginner Hoop Dance with Nikki Hunt Join experienced hooper and local musician Nikki Hunt and learn beginning level hooping techniques, including hooping around the waist, arms and legs. The classes will go over hooping tricks and transitions to help you create your own personal flow. Move to great motivational music while you get a healthy, low-‐impact workout. Class begins Tuesday, 10/6 from 5:30 – 6:30 pm for 6 weeks. Fee: $64. Location: Medomak Valley High School. Cooking with Mushrooms with David Spahr Join local naturalist, photographer, forest farmer and author David Spahr and discover how to use wild mushrooms for cooking! Learn about matching mushroom species to cooking techniques and what foods and wines to match with wild mushrooms. Class meets Tuesday, 10/6 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Fee: $29 (includes food costs). Location: Medomak Valley High School. Natural Beekeeping in Top Bar Hives – The How & Why of Becoming a Natural Beekeeper with Christy Hemenway This workshop and weekend intensive is designed to show you how to keep bees in natural, sustainable top bar hives! First, come to a one-‐night information session and get all your questions about keeping bees naturally answered. Then, dive in to a weekend intensive learning experience where you will gain the skills and confidence you need to become a natural, top bar beekeeper, using no chemicals. The class and the weekend are presented by Christy Hemenway, owner of Gold Star Honeybees and author of two books on the subject of natural beekeeping. The one night session meets Tuesday, 10/6 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Fee: $20. Weekend Intensive meets Saturday & Sunday, 10/10 & 10/11 from 8:30 am – 4:00 pm. Fee: $125. Location for both events: Medomak Middle School. Substitute Teaching Series – Free of Charge Join us to learn about becoming a substitute teacher for RSU 40. These sessions will be presented by district teachers, substitute teachers and administrators and are all held at Medomak Valley High School. Substitute Teaching at the Elementary Level If you’d like to work with younger children, this session will focus on substituting at the preschool through grade 6 levels at the 5 district elementary schools. Class meets Tuesday, 10/6 from 6:00 -‐ 7:30 pm. Substitute Teaching at the Secondary Level Substitute teaching at the district middle school and high school will be the focus of this session, with valuable strategies for working with this age group. Class meets Tuesday, 10/13 from 6:00 – 7:30 pm. Ongoing class: HiSET (formerly GED) Preparation Class If you or someone you know needs to earn a high school credential, join us on Wednesday evenings at Medomak Valley High School and start the process with us. Preparation consists of Reading and Math assessments and taking the HiSET Practice Tests in Reading, Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies prior to taking the five Official HiSET Exams. If you need tutoring in any subject area, we can help with that as well. If Wednesday evening does not fit your schedule, we will work out a daytime schedule for you. Class meets every Wednesday from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Fee: FREE for Maine residents. Location: Medomak Valley High School, Room 30.

Healthy snacks help students maintain energy throughout the day and help ensure they are ready to focus and learn. We want your kids to be the healthiest they can be!

thin pretzel sticks� Cottage Cheese or Yogurt with Fruit and/or Granola: Try using fresh
grapes, frozen berries, or canned peaches or pineapple� Crackers with Nut Butter or Hummus� String Cheese� Veggies and Dip � Trail Mix: Whole grain cereal (e.g. Cheerios, Mini-Wheats, Wheat Chex)

HEALTHY SNACK Ideas

� Veggies and Dip: Baby carrots, cucumber slices, red pepper slices, broccoli, cherry tomatoes, snap peas, or celery sticks served with hummus, salad dressing, or other dip.
� Vegetable Sticks with Spread: Celery or carrot sticks topped with nut butter or cream cheese (add some raisins to make ‘ants on a log’!)
� Snack Kabobs: Veggie or fruit chunks skewered onto thin pretzel sticks.
� Sweet Potato Fries: Baked sweet potato wedges, tossed lightly with olive oil and salt.
� Cottage Cheese or Yogurt with Fruit and/or Granola: Try using fresh grapes, frozen berries, or canned peaches or pineapple.
� Mini Bagel with Spread: Try cream cheese, nut butter, or hummus.
� Apple Treats: Sprinkle apple chunks with cinnamon and/or raisins or granola, then mix in some nut butter.
