VEHICLE DATA SHEETS Data sheets are included in this section for each of the major versions of the Patton and M60 series tanks as well as a number of other vehicles based on these chassis. These sheets cover both the original production models and the later vehicles such as the M48A3 and M48A5 which were converted from the earlier tanks. The data follow the format established in the earlier volumes in this series to permit easy comparison with those vehicles. Where possible, the source documents for the data were the tank arsenal drawings for each produc- tion vehicle and the official characteristic sheets followed by test reports from Fort Knox or Aberdeen Proving Ground and the appropriate technical man- uals. Needless to say, much of the data from the vari- ous sources frequently did not agree. In that case, the dimensions from the drawings were used unless obvi- ous changes had been made. Some of the drawing dimensions were for reference only and would vary on the actual tank. For example, the fire height, defined as the distance from the ground to the center- line of the main weapon bore at zero elevation, would certainly vary from the drawing dimension which was given to one tenth of an inch. The same would apply to the ground clearance which also would change with the load on the tank. However, these design values are quoted to permit comparison between vehicles. Although the meaning of most terms used in the data sheets is obvious, a few may need some explana- tion. The ground contact length at zero penetration is the distance between the centers of the front and rear road wheels. This value is used to calculate the ground contact area and then the ground pressure us- ing the combat weight of the vehicle. The tread is the distance between the centerline of each track. Gross engine power and torque reflect the shaft output with only those accessories essential to engine operation, neglecting the effect of such items as air cleaners or generators. The net power and torque are the values actually obtained with the engine installed in the vehi- cle using all of its normal accessories. The weights are given for each vehicle unstowed and combat loaded. The latter includes the crew and a full load of fuel and ammunition. The power to weight ratios were calcu- lated using the combat weight. The actual weights of individual vehicles were obtained when possible. If it was a single experimen- tal item, the exact weight is quoted. However, if it was intended to be representative of a production run, the weight is rounded off to the nearest 100 pounds. In many cases average values are used for production vehicles and these are given to the nearest 1000 pounds. For a few experimental vehicles, only approximate weights could be obtained. Stowage arrangements frequently changed dur- ing the long operational life of much of this equip- ment. In that case, the stowage appropriate when the vehicle was new or during its period of greatest use is listed in the data sheets. Also, because of security restrictions, some items have been omitted. 421

VEHICLE DATA SHEETS

Data sheets are included in this section for each of the major versions of the Patton and M60 series tanks as well as a number of other vehicles based on these chassis. These sheets cover both the original production models and the later vehicles such as the M48A3 and M48A5 which were converted from the earlier tanks. The data follow the format established in the earlier volumes in this series to permit easy comparison with those vehicles.

Where possible, the source documents for the data were the tank arsenal drawings for each production vehicle and the official characteristic sheets followed by test reports from Fort Knox or Aberdeen Proving Ground and the appropriate technical manuals. Needless to say, much of the data from the various sources frequently did not agree. In that case, the dimensions from the drawings were used unless obvious changes had been made. Some of the drawing dimensions were for reference only and would vary on the actual tank. For example, the fire height, defined as the distance from the ground to the center-line of the main weapon bore at zero elevation, would certainly vary from the drawing dimension which was given to one tenth of an inch. The same would apply to the ground clearance which also would change with the load on the tank. However, these design values are quoted to permit comparison between vehicles.

Although the meaning of most terms used in the data sheets is obvious, a few may need some explanation. The ground contact length at zero penetration

is the distance between the centers of the front and rear road wheels. This value is used to calculate the ground contact area and then the ground pressure using the combat weight of the vehicle. The tread is the distance between the centerline of each track. Gross engine power and torque reflect the shaft output with only those accessories essential to engine operation, neglecting the effect of such items as air cleaners or generators. The net power and torque are the values actually obtained with the engine installed in the vehicle using all of its normal accessories. The weights are given for each vehicle unstowed and combat loaded. The latter includes the crew and a full load of fuel and ammunition. The power to weight ratios were calculated using the combat weight.

The actual weights of individual vehicles were obtained when possible. If it was a single experimental item, the exact weight is quoted. However, if it was intended to be representative of a production run, the weight is rounded off to the nearest 100 pounds. In many cases average values are used for production vehicles and these are given to the nearest 1000 pounds. For a few experimental vehicles, only approximate weights could be obtained.

Stowage arrangements frequently changed during the long operational life of much of this equipment. In that case, the stowage appropriate when the vehicle was new or during its period of greatest use is listed in the data sheets. Also, because of security restrictions, some items have been omitted.

WEAPON DATA SHEETS

The following data sheets list the general characteristics of the weapons mounted on various models of the Patton and M60 series tanks. Some of the self-propelled artillery weapons which utilized the tank chassis or its components also are included. Penetration performance of the armor piercing ammunition has been omitted because many of the rounds are still subject to security restrictions. Other details of some later types of ammunition also have been left out for the same reasons.

The various dimensions listed in the data sheets are defined in the sketch below.

A. Length of Chamber (to rifling)

B. Length of Rifling

C. Length of Bore

D. Depth of Breech Recess

E. Length, Muzzle to Rear Face of Breech

F. Additional Length, Blast Deflector, Etc.

G. Overall Length

H. Length, Breechblock and Firing Lock

I. Length of Tube

J. Length of Separable Chamber

K. Length of Tube and Chamber

The ammunition is listed according to the official U.S. army nomenclature in use during its period of greatest service. Since this did change and sometimes needed clarification, a standard nomenclature is added in parentheses based on the following terms which are used separately and in combination.

AP Armor piercing, uncapped APBC Armor piercing with ballistic cap APCBC Armor piercing with armor piercing cap

and ballistic cap APCR Armor piercing, composite rigid APDS Armor piercing, discarding sabot APFSDS Armor piercing, fin stabilized, discard

ing sabot HE High explosive HEAT High explosive antitank, shaped charge HESH High explosive squash head TP Target practice TPBC Target practice with ballistic cap TPCR Target practice, composite rigid MP Multipurpose T Tracer

All armor plate angles in the data sheets are measured between a vertical plane and the plate surface.

The early tank guns described in this volume were fitted with single baffle muzzle brakes. These were found on all of the M46 and M46A1 tanks, but they were replaced on the production M47 and M48 series tanks by a cylindrical blast deflector. Frequently referred to in many documents as a counterweight, it served another important function in directing the muzzle blast to each side reducing target obscuration. The later T-shape blast deflectors were designed to optimize this performance and they were either cast or fabricated by welding.

The HEAT-T M431 and APERS-T XM580E1 rounds were assembled with the M114E1 and XM200 cartridge cases respectively. The T119 gun differed from the M36(T119E1) primarily in the detailed design of the breech mechanism. The M41(T139) gun was lighter in weight than the M36 and the tube was attached to the breech ring with interrupted threads. This permitted a quick change of the tube without removing the weapon from the mount. The T178 gun was essentially the M41 mounted upside down with lugs modified to permit mounting the recoil mechanism in the forward part of the turret. In addition to the ammunition assembled with the M108 or M108B1 cartridge cases, these weapons could use any of the rounds for the lower pressure Ml, M2, and M3 series of 90mm guns fitted in the M19 or Ml9B1 cartridge cases.

The ammunition development was terminated for the T140 series of guns prior to completion and the test data were incomplete.

The T140 and T140E2 guns were intended for use with an automatic loader and were mounted with the vertical sliding breechblock moving up to open and down to close. The T140E3 was mounted for manual loading with the breechblock moving down to open and up to close. The ammunition for the T140 series of 105mm guns was assembled with the T43 cartridge case.

The T254 gun was ballistically identical with the British 105mm X15E8 or L7 cannon, but it utilized a different tube and breech design. The T254E2 weapon retained the vertical sliding breechblock of the T254, but it featured a tube that was interchangeable with that on the British gun. On the original T254E2, the U.S. tube was fitted with a concentric bore evacuator. After the British tube was adopted with its eccentric bore evacuator, the T254E2 designation was retained and the weapon was standardized as the M68. The M68E1 differed only in minor details from the M68 and it could be fitted with a mirror for a muzzle reference system. Ammunition for these weapons was assembled with the cartridge cases M115(brass), M150(brass), M150Bl(steel), M148Al(brass), and M148AlBl(steel).

The T179 gun was similar to the 120mm Gun M58(T123E1) in the M103 tank. However the T179 was inverted in the T169 mount for use with an automatic loader. Also, this was a rigid mount without a recoil system. The 120mm Gun T123E6 was manufactured from 160,000 psi yield strength steel as a lightweight version of the M58 gun.
