    The first edition of theMeditations$as *)#ished in 7atin )y Michae# So#y of Paris atthe Sign of the Phoenixin 1641 c*( Prii#e%io et 8ro)atione Doctor*(. The oya#privilege$as indeed %ien )*t the approbationsee(s to hae )een of a (ost indefinite

    :ind. The reason of the )oo: )ein% *)#ished in "rance and not in +o##and $here

    Descartes $as #iin% in a char(in% co*ntry ho*se at Ende%eest near 7eiden $as

    aarent#y his fear that the D*tch (inisters (i%ht in so(e $ay #ay ho#d of it. +is friendPere Mersenne too: char%e of its *)#ication in Paris and $rote to hi( a)o*t any

    diffic*#ties that occ*rred in the co*rse of its ro%ress thro*%h the ress. The second

    edition $as ho$eer *)#ished at 8(sterda( in 1642 )y 7o*is E#eir and this edition$as acco(anied )y the no$ co(#eted Objections and Replies.2The edition fro( $hich

    the resent trans#ation is (ade is the second ;*st (entioned and is that adoted )y MM.

    8da( and Tannery as the (ore correct for reasons that they state in detai# in the refaceto their edition. The $or: $as trans#ated into "rench )y the D*c de 7*ynes in 1642 and

    Descartes considered the trans#ation so e!ce##ent that he had it *)#ished so(e years #ater.

    C#erse#ier to co(#ete (atters had the Objectionsa#so *)#ished in "rench $ith the
