    Name, Form & Function

In order for something to be visible it has to have form. In order for it to have form, it has to

have a name, a label. It is name that defines form. Did you get that? Ill repeat it:

It is name that defines form.

Hence, naming/ labelling something is very powerful. When something has form it becomes

visible. So, before it has a name it is literally invisible. This works at all levels of relative existence.

It is one of the great principles of practical magick the dark version being practised by

unscrupulous politicians, despots and morally bankrupt business everywhere. There are many

practical applications on the light side that, for now, we will leave to those of you who have a

natural inclination towards that sort of thing. We may return to practical applications in a future

book. For now we have a particular purpose related to our meditation practice.

A name, then, defines form. It does this by setting a boundary. So, for example, when we say

tree we know it is that woody brown thing with branches and leaves but is not the pond beside it,

the ground out of which it is growing, or the No Fishing sign attached to it. So name sets a

boundary, a line between otherwise indistinguishable phenomena. Names carve up reality intoobjects. This is, of course, very useful. Making a shopping list would otherwise be nightmare!

A name also grounds and fixes in our reality. This goes for people as much as anything else.

A baby does not fully incarnate in this reality until it has a name. The name gives boundary,

separation; it grounds and fixes in this reality.

The same rules apply to mental and emotional phenomena, as much as to physical

phenomena. In other words, thoughts and emotions without names are invisible. We dont see them.

Our range of possibility for healing and integrating our mind and emotions is very limited by this

    invisibility.

Now here we need to make a further and very important distinction between form and

function. Just because something does not have a name, a visible form, does not mean that it isnt

doinganything, that it has no function. Just because something has no form, does not mean that itdoes not exist at all. Being invisible in this way, it can still exist as function in other words it can

still affect you and your living of life. There are many things in our universe that fall into this

    category.

To use a silly example: if you had lived your entire life cut off from modern society and

were suddenly transported to the centre of a busy city, you would have no concept, no name and

therefore no form for bus. A bus would be invisible to you. The fact that buses are invisible in

your reality wouldnt help very much were you to step out in front of a moving one. Here bus still

exists as a function in your reality, though not as name and form. A daft example, but you get the

idea. Shakespeare had a much more beautiful way of putting it: A rose by any other name would

smell as sweet. To be slightly more serious in the process of manifestation out of undifferentiated oneness,

function precedes form. Function exists before form manifests. We can say that form is a function

of function and the operand is naming.

So, for the purpose of our meditation practice, we can say that neurotic complexes, locked

and repeating energy patterns, while they remain invisible (subconscious) have no name and form

in conscious awareness yet can exert a powerful influence (function) on us. Actually, these

complexes can inform or prejudice our thoughts and feelings, beliefs and attitudes, choices and

decisions. And these are the raw materials of our reality, causal plane qualities and what happens

on the causal level, by very definition causes our reality to manifest.

So long as these complexes continue to function invisibly, behind the scenes, as it were,

the reality that you manifest will not be the one you want it will be the one that ego wants. Andremember, egos plan is ultimately to destroy you. Remember? Ego offers the appearance of short-

term gain or victory, but behind that, in the medium or longer term is always suffering and defeat.

The last thing in this part of our discussion is to consider name more closely. Name is the

word of the Earth Element. In the same way: emotion is the word of Water; love and will is the

word of Fire; idea is the word of Air; and Wisdom is the word of Space/ Ether/ Spirit.

The process of exploring, observing and releasing the stories during our meditation, which

can also be called re-patterning or re-programming is, in essence, a process of remembering. Re-

membering putting the parts/ members together again. And it is a process. All the parts dont

necessarily appear all at the same time. We have to put in effort and actively engage with theprocess.

Very often we start from that feeling of contraction, of being stifled or stuck the feeling of

discomfort. By allowing that, by being with that using the tools of mindfulness and awareness in

the way we have already learned we are recognizing the word of Water, healing at the level of the

    emotions.

As observation is the most powerful agent of change, recognizing/ seeing the word of

Water, allows release and re-integration at this level of our being. The word of Water has become

visible the pattern/ neurotic complex we are working with is not yet named, however, not yet

grounded. We have not healed to the level of Earth, of this physical reality.

So we continue the process, applying the method we have learned. We flow with the stories,

with the word of Air, going round the loops, the repeating patterns, the bubbles. Then, bit by bit, orsuddenly, there is the name the hub or centre, the initial point, the ground/ birthplace of the

story/ pattern. It is the gravity point that has been invisible, which has nonetheless provided the

force to keep the stories and emotions in orbit around it. Now you see it and with observation

comes change, with visibility its strength is already gone and with the application of the method its

power (to limit, restrict, harm you) is removed. It is recycled and released back into your system as

useful energy. And it does this through fire the return of enthusiasm, that sudden feeling that

flashes through you when you realize the hold of this pattern over you has gone. All that then

remains is to ground the new pattern, the new pattern of energy or resonance.

Just to make sure youve got it the name may literally be a name: Peter, Janice and so on.

It may be a phrase: that big kid at school. It may be another kind of name mommy, daddy, uncle,

spider absolutely anything. When it comes, though, there is a recognition, a feeling, a knowing.

And if youre thinking How will I know the moment? What if I miss it? we suggest that you re-

read the section about how ego subverts your confidence (above).

At the level of the name you are working with the Earth Element so you are working,

amongst other things, at the level of the physical body. It is here that physical reactions and changes

take place. Reactions may include: temporary changes in rate and depth of breathing; temporary

changes in body temperature; clonisms (jerking movements beloved ofkriya yoga practitioners)

related with revitalizing the nervous system and so on. If you do experience physical reactions, be

happy! Everything is fine and you are actually healing your body. Congratulations!

So lets take an example of something that is my prejudice, my neuroticism. Prejudice, by

the way, means to pre-judge, to have made your mind up beforehand and by definition, without allthe pertinent facts. Prejudice, then, means not seeing things as they are, not allowing things to be

fresh, new, open, spacious, spontaneous. You can see how it is a close crony of neuroticism that

means to have a story, where there is no story.
