laurence demaison explora a naturali-dade da silhueta humana com um olhar romântico, caracteristicamente francês.Apesar de o seu percurso artístico ter começado em Arquitectura, o seu ta-lento logo foi desviado para o univer-so da fotografia. Autodidacta no manuseamento da câ-mara, laurence apresenta um trabalho imagético exclusivamente de auto-re-tratos, captados entre 1993 e 2009. posteriormente, a fotógrafa começou também a recorrer a manequins e bo-necos. o processo é analógico e revela-do pela própria autora, originando ima-gens intocadas – nāo existindo qualquer manipulaçāo dos filmes fotográficos.Amante da estética a preto e branco, laurence entretém o olhar com ima-gens de longa exposiçāo, complexas na sua simplicidade, presas à ambiguidade

Laurence demaison studies the natural aspect of the human silhouette with a romantic eye that is typically french. she started out in architecture but that particular talent was soon sidetracked into photography. self-taught with the camera, Laurence focused exclusively on self-portraits dur-ing the period of 1993 - 2009. Later she began to shoot mannequins and dolls as well. the analogic process is revealed by the photographer herself, leading to pic-tures that are totally untouched – with-out any digital manipulation whatsoever.she is a fan of black and white and she amuses the eye with long exposures that are complex despite their apparent sim-plicity. they are prisoners of the ambi-guity of the lack of light and colour, thus freeing up the observer’s imagination. da ausência de luz e cor, o que liberta a imaginaçāo do observador.perita no jogo visual das reflexōes, refracçōes e repetições, a fotógrafa volta a surpreender com a série Médi-tations, que ilustra a própria como su-jeito, envolta em fumaça, explorando a distorçāo suave do seu rosto através de uma assombrosa experiência com con-trastes e dessaturaçāo. o fumo bran-co emana do sujeito, escondendo a sua identidade ao revelar apenas uma si-lhueta no escuro. Méditations revela, mais uma vez, a ten-dência artística da fotógrafa em cap-tar auto-retratos incomuns, na tentati-va de se redescobrir entre a escuridāo. Jogando com o tempo de exposiçāo e manchando as imagens com contras-tes, laurence explora a obscuridade de forma criativa, colocando esta sé-rie entre o surrealismo e a fotografia de moda. forte em emoçōes que ba-lançam os sentidos do observador en-tre o poético, o frágil e o dramático, no limbo monocromático fica a questāo so-bre a nossa própria relaçāo com o mun-do e com o nosso corpo.

of reflections, refractions and repeti-tion. now, she once again surprises us with her series méditations that illus-trates herself as a subject, surrounded by smoke, exploring the soft distortion of her face by way of a ghostlike expe-rience with contrast and desaturation. the white smoke emanates from the subject, hiding her identity while sug-gesting merely a silhouette in the dark. méditations reveals, yet again, the ar-tistic tendency of the photographer to capture unusual self-portraits in an at-tempt to rediscover herself amongst the shadows. playing with exposure times, Laurence studies the creative side of the dark, exhibiting a collection that is lo-cated somewhere between surrealism and fashion photography. replete with emotion that make the spectator’s sen-timents balance between the poetic, the fragile, the dramatic and the monochro-matic limbo where the question hovers: what is our relationship with the world and with our body?
