Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time/Decimo Octavo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
Meditation on today’s readings:
"He gave them bread from
the heavens to eat." John 6:31
Today's Gospel reading from the sixth
chapter of John begins Jesus' famous Bread of Life
discourse, which we read for four consecutive
Sundays. There is a distinct, intentional progression
in the words of Jesus regarding our response to this
heavenly bread.
During the first part of the discourse, Jesus
emphasizes that we must believe He is the Bread of
Life. The word believe is used four times from verses
29 through 47. Jesus teaches that we must believe in
Him, and accordingly, believe the truths He is
revealing. "I Myself am the Bread of Life. No one
who comes to Me shall ever be hungry, no one who
believes in Me shall ever thirst" (Jn 6:35).
Jesus makes an abrupt, intentional transition
in the last half of the discourse. He stops using the
word "believe" and begins using verbs and nouns
referring to eating and drinking. For nine
consecutive verses, 50 through 58, the verbs eat and
drink or nouns for food and drink are used. "If
anyone eats this bread he shall live forever"
(Jn 6:51). "If you do not eat the flesh of the Son of
Man and drink His blood, you have no life in
you" (Jn 6:53). "The man who feeds on this bread
shall live forever" (Jn 6:58).
Jesus clearly states that anyone who believes
in Him will take the next step and eat His eucharistic
flesh. His initial hearers understood exactly the
progression Jesus was making; they just refused to
obey and eat (Jn 6:6). What about you? What will
you do in response to Jesus' clear words? "Unless
you eat..."
Prayer: Father , every day, or as often as
possible, I will open wide my mouth so You may fill
it with the food of Your eucharistic body and blood
(Ps 81:11, 17).
Promise: "He rained m anna upon them for
food and gave them heavenly bread." (Ps 78:24)
Praise: Praise You, r isen Jesus, for giving us
the Holy Spirit and Yourself in the Eucharist.

"Él les dio pan de los cielos para comer ". Juan 6:31
La lectura del Evangelio de hoy del capítulo
sexto de Juan comienza el famoso discurso del Pan
de la Vida de Jesús, que leemos por cuatro domingos
consecutivos. Hay una progresión clara e intencional
en las palabras de Jesús con respecto a nuestra
respuesta a este pan celestial.
Durante la primera parte del discurso, Jesús
enfatiza que debemos creer que Él es el Pan de Vida.
La palabra creer se usa cuatro veces de los versículos
29 al 47. Jesús enseña que debemos creer en Él y, en
consecuencia, creer en las verdades que está
revelando. "Yo mismo soy el pan de la vida. Nadie
que viene a mí tendrá hambre alguna vez, nadie que
cree en mí tendrá sed jamás" (Jn 6:35).
Jesús hace una transición abrupta e
intencional en la última mitad del discurso. Deja de
usar la palabra "creer" y comienza a usar verbos y
sustantivos que se refieren a comer y beber. Durante
nueve versículos consecutivos, del 50 al 58, los
verbos comen y beben o se usan sustantivos para la
comida y la bebida. "Si alguno come este pan, vivirá
para siempre" (Jn 6:51). "Si no comes la carne del
Hijo del Hombre y bebes Su sangre, no tienes vida en
ti" (Jn 6:53). "El hombre que se alimenta de este pan
vivirá para siempre" (Jn 6:58).
Jesús claramente declara que cualquiera que
crea en Él dará el siguiente paso y comerá su carne
eucarística. Sus oyentes iniciales
entendieron exactamente la progresión que Jesús
estaba haciendo; simplemente se negaron a obedecer
y comer (Jn 6: 6). ¿Que pasa contigo? ¿Qué harás en
respuesta a las claras palabras de Jesús? "A menos
que comas ..."
Oración: Padre, todos los días, o con la
mayor frecuencia posible, abriré mi boca para que
puedas llenarla con la comida de tu cuerpo
eucarístico y tu sangre (Sal 81:11, 17)
Promesa: "Él les hizo llover maná para
comer y les dio pan celestial". (Sal 78:24)
Alabanza: Alabado seas, Jesús resucitado,
por darnos el Espíritu Santo y Tú mismo en la

a seminar on “Handling Finances God’s Way” will be presented by
COMPASS Catholic Ministries. The seminar will address practial ítems like
budgeting, as well as present God’s plan for how we should handle our finances.

THE SHIP OF LIFE
Steer the ship of my life, Lord, to your quiet
harbor, where I can be safe from the storms of sin
and conflict. Show me the course I should take.
Renew in me the gift of discernment, so that I can
see the right direction in which I should go. Give
me the strength and the courage to the choose the
right course, even when the sea is rough and the
waves are high, knowing that through enduring
hardship and danger in your name we shall find
comfort and peace. Amen.
EL BARCO DE LA VIDA
Dirige la nave de mi vida, Señor, a tu tranquilo
puerto, donde puedo estar a salvo de las
tormentas del pecado y el conflicto. Muéstrame el
curso que debería tomar. Renueva en mí el don
del discernimiento, para que pueda ver la
dirección correcta en la que debería ir. Dame la
fuerza y el coraje para elegir el rumbo correcto,
incluso cuando el mar sea duro y las olas sean
altas, sabiendo que a través de dificultades
duraderas y peligro en tu nombre encontraremos
consuelo y paz. Amén.
