Notes Regarding This Practice Altar and Gompa Set-upWhen performing this puja extensively, it is best to set out 108 sets of o ff ering

bowls. If this is not possible, then 8 sets will su ffi ce. The o ff erings for this pujaare set out in a unique fashion: Star ng toward the back of the altar and workingforward, one places a row of 8 argham, followed by a row of 8 padhyam, then 8pushpe, and so on, rather than consecu ve rows of all 8 o ff erings.

One should also prepare and o ff er 8 tormas made from the 3 whites and the 3sweets (milk, bu er, yoghurt, sugar, molasses, and honey) in the shape of teardrops. Other o ff erings of food, owers, etc. are op onal.

It is recommended by Lama Zopa Rinpoche to also have on the altar, if possible,a representa on of the Medicine Buddha mandala (obtainable from FPMT Edu-ca on Department) in a mandala house and above that, a copy of the MedicineBuddha Sutra wrapped in ve-colored cloth.

NOTE: When sea ng monks and nuns in the front, it is customary to seat monkson the le side of the throne (when facing the throne) and nuns on the right. During “big pujas” (these are de ned as self-ini a ons or long pujas and pu-

jas with extensive o ff erings, etc.) one can o ff er a s ck of incense for the lama orgeshe to hold during the verses of invoca on.

Ritual ImplementsOne should have both dorje and bell, but no damaru or inner o ff ering.

NOTE: Throughout the preceding text, small symbols of bells or other instru-ments and hand mudras appear in the margins to help the prac oner know whenone should play these instruments or when to do certain mudras. It is hoped thatthese small indica ons will be helpful to those not yet familiar with these aspects

of tantric prac ce. Other symbols and their meanings are: lotus mudraprostra on mudra show the dorje

Practice TipsBecause this is a prac ce belonging to Ac on Tantra, it is best not to eat blackfoods the day one performs the puja. A er the puja, one can eat whatever onewishes, but before doing the puja, avoid black foods.

According to the instruc ons of Lama Zopa Rinpoche, before commencing the ac-tual prac ce, begin with preliminary prayers (found in the “Preliminary Prayers”sec on of Essen al Buddhist Prayers, Vol. 1 ), including prostra ons with Confes-sion of Downfalls to the Thirty-Five Buddhas and the General Confession prayer.

Extensive Offering Practice

Think that you have received these o ff erings through the kindnessof all sen ent beings. Make charity of the o ff erings to all the hellbeings, pretas, animals, humans, asuras, and suras. Think that youand all other beings are going to make o ff erings to the Buddhastogether. Generate great happiness that you are accumula ng in- nite merit by thinking in this way.

Make o ff erings to all holy objects, visualizing them as manifesta-ons of your own root guru, who is one with all other virtuous

friends. Since the virtuous friend is the most powerful object inthe merit eld, by o ff ering like this, you accumulate the most ex-tensive merit. In his text, THE FIVE STAGES, the savior Nagarjunasaid, “Abandon making other o ff erings; try purely to make o ff er-ings only to your guru. By pleasing your guru, you will achieve thesublime wisdom of the omniscient mind.”

Place your hands in prostra on mudra at your heart. Each meyou make o ff erings, think that you are prostra ng, making o ff er-ings, and that the guru’s holy mind experiences great bliss.

Actual PracticeFirst, we make o ff erings to all the holy objects here in this place,every single thangka, statue, stupa, scripture, picture, tsa tsa, rel-ic, and prayer wheel, by seeing them as inseparable from our ownvirtuous friend, who is one with all other virtuous friends. (Pros-trate, o ff er, and generate great bliss.)

Meditation on RejoicingYou can rotate your medita on on rejoicing during the puja in thefollowing way: At the appropriate me during the rst seven-limbverse, rejoice in the goodness of yourself. The next me the sev-

en-limb prayer is recited, pause and focus your rejoicing on thegoodness of others. The next me, rejoice in the goodness of allgurus, buddhas, and bodhisa vas. Then start again with yourself,etc. For the nal seven-limb verse, rejoice in the goodness of all.

Actual Practice

Self: First, rejoice in all of the good things you yourself have donein the past. Think of what you must have done in past lives to re-sult in this precious human life today: prac cing generosity, mo-rality, pa ence, and making stainless pure prayers. Every goodthing you experience now is the result of past posi ve ac onsyou have done. As you are re ec ng on the good things you musthave done in the past, rejoice by reci ng to yourself like a mantra

“How wonderful it is, how wonderful it is.” (Pause)Rejoice in all the good things, sincere prayers, prac ces, helpingothers, following your teacher’s advice, etc. that you are doing inthis present life thinking, “How wonderful it is, how wonderful itis.” (Pause)

Then, rejoice in all the virtuous ac vi es you will do in the future,all the realiza ons on the path you will develop and all the waysyou will help others, teach the Dharma, etc. thinking, “How won-derful it is, how wonderful it is.” (Pause)

Others: Now, think of all the wonderful things others have done,all their virtuous quali es and the ways people have helped oneanother in the past, are helping each other now, and will do so inthe future, especially all of your companions in the spiritual life,thinking “how wonderful it is, how wonderful it is.” Think alsoof par cular quali es that others have such as generosity, intel-ligence, beauty, fame, wealth, devo on, etc., thinking “How won-derful it is, how wonderful it is.” (Pause)

Think about the life stories of the various saints of all the di ff erentreligious tradi ons and how they bene ted others through de-

vo ng their lives to spiritual prac ce and service. Rejoice in theirquali es and deeds thinking, “How wonderful it is, how wonder-ful it is.” (Pause)

Buddhas and bodhisa vas: Con nue by thinking speci cally ofall the incredible things that have been done in the past, are be-ing done now, and will be done in the future by all the buddhas

and bodhisa vas, including your own teachers and the lineagelamas. Remember their quali es, their life stories, the hardshipsthey bore to generate realiza ons in their minds and preserve thedharma, and how they have helped countless living beings think-ing, “How wonderful it is, how wonderful it is.” (Pause)

All: Now, allow your mind to be completely aware of, and rejoice

in, all the wonderful things that yourself, others, and all buddhasand bodhisa vas have done, are doing, and will do from now un-l all beings reach enlightenment. Feel expansive and happy for

yourself and others thinking, “How wonderful it is, how wonder-ful it is.” (Pause)
