Why study medicine at Hull?Having opened its doors in 2003, the innovative Hull York Medical School(HYMS) – established by the Universities of Hull and York in partnership withthe NHS – graduated its first medical students in 2008.

The school capitalises on Hull’s considerable strengths in clinical medicineand York’s background in bioscience and health-related research. HYMSstudents therefore benefit from outstanding academic and clinical facilities, while the Humber and North Yorkshire area derives substantial clinicaladvantages from having a world-class medical school in the region.

Modern teaching methods such as problem-based learning, a virtual learningenvironment, patient contact from Week 3 and clinical placementsthroughout the course have put HYMS at the cutting edge of medicaleducation. The school is already internationally recognised for offering amedical degree that will produce excellent doctors, rigorously educated tomeet the needs of the modern world.

How will you learn? The HYMS curriculum combines innovative learning styles with a solidgrounding in sciences and regular clinical experience. We believe that it isimportant for you to meet patients from the very outset of the course – afterall, that is what medicine is all about.

In Years 1 and 2, half of our medical students are based in Hull and half inYork. Allocation to either campus is normally by ballot. Later, you spend timeon clinical placements around the region, encompassing Hull and EastYorkshire, York and North Yorkshire, and North Lincolnshire. The amount oftime spent in community settings is unique to HYMS.

The undergraduate medical course lasts for five years, and HYMS has some700 medical students at any one time. Graduates are awarded the degree ofMB BS, a recognised UK and EU primary medical qualification. The degree isjointly awarded by the Universities of Hull and York.

What will you study?Because our medical degree is new, the course is designed to provide the bestpossible education for the doctors of the 21st century.

This is an exciting time to join HYMS as we become a fully matureorganisation. Besides offering a top-quality undergraduate school, we arebuilding and developing further postgraduate medical education andestablishing high-quality, internationally recognised research. Many studentsare also encouraged to study for an extra year towards an intercalated degree(normally BSc Hons) before completing the MB BS.
