Publishing a brochure about automotive industry centre Heilbronn could be likened to bringing owls to Athens. And not only because of the latest major AUDI AG investments in the northern part of
the city. Although overshadowed by this and other established industries, the second-largest city in greater Stuttgart has become a key location for the manufacturers, suppliers and engineering services providers of the medical technology industry. The significant financial commitment of the Zukunftsfonds Heilbronn GmbH & Co. KG (ZFHN) future fund and the excellent general conditions in Wohlgelegen Future Park, a state-of-the-art technology park, are the mainsprings of this dynamic development.

Heilbronn thinks children are very special.
Starting on 1 January 2008, Heilbronn
was the first city in Germany to enable all
children ages three and older to attend
one of the almost 90 kindergartens and
day care centres in the city – free of
charge. And the city has also increased the
number of day nursery slots significantly.
Today, all primary schools and most
secondary schools in Heilbronn provide
seven hours or more of lessons and
leisure activities. With five secondary
schools orientated to a general education
and three vocational secondary schools,
Heilbronn serves around 20,000 pupils.

BUGA plans for a Neckar habitat. The functional general conditions are also excellent. The planning laws allow demand-compatible utilisation, to the point of industrial production. And the state-of-the-art fibre-optic and VDSL infrastructure is already in place. The Science and Technology Centre (WTZ) is the heart of the technology park. It was funded by ERDF funds from the EU and budgets from the state of Baden-Württemberg – a total of around €9.2 million. WTZ Heilbronn GmbH, a subsidiary of the Stadtsiedlung housing company, is the project
administrator. Not only does the imposing WTZ III section offer additional rental space to small and mid-sized firms, as do WTZ I (offices) and WTZ II (laboratories), but it also provides conference and meeting rooms, food service and rooms for needs-compatible day care and health-related fitness
training – true added value for all users. In the ideal case, the personal contacts made there will spark the next ideas for the

The city of Heilbronn has a Business
Development Office, which is the initial
contact point for all companies and inves-
tors in the Heilbronn business location.
It guides and supports firms as they deal
with administrative issues, providing its
know-how and contacts informally and
free of charge. With tools such as brochu-
res and the image film about Heilbronn
as a business location, the office also
assists companies’ recruiting efforts. And
it is active in the Dual Career Network in
Heilbronn.
Established in 1856, Stadtsiedlung Heil-
bronn GmbH is responsible for a diverse
range of housing construction activities,
including the high-value Neckar Terraces
in Heilbronn. The firm also headed the
project development for Wohlgelegen
Future Park, and is the lessor for Innova-
tionsfabrik (IFH), a new business centre.

With around 8,000 students and over 200
professors, Heilbronn University (HHN) is
the largest university of applied sciences
in Baden-Württemberg. It has a strong
profile in the areas of technology, business
and information science. When HHN
moved its Sciences and Technology
Transfer Centre to Wohlgelegen Future
Park, it was supporting the establishment
of a medicine technology cluster in the
region.

programme since 1972. It is the oldest
course of study on medical information
sciences in Europe. The university’s
GECKO Institute for Medicine, Information

The medical technology cluster in Heilbronn is a nucleus for Heilbronn’s
profile as a high tech business location. From the city of Heilbronn to
Wohlgelegen Future Park, a new axis of innovation connects the Dieter
Schwarz Foundation campus, the experimenta science centre and the
Innovationsfabrik to BUGA 2019 and the new Neckarbogen district. In
conjunction with ZFHN, the medical technology companies are an intrinsic
component of and driving force behind the development of this new axis
of innovation. The Heilbronn medical technology cluster is located in
the Heilbronn-Franconia economic region, and closely connected to the
Baden-Württemberg high tech centre. As the initiator of the Heilbronn
MedTechForum, the IHK Heilbronn-Franconia supports the development

Heilbronn GmbH is the largest, most capable
health service provider in the region. It offers
top calibre medical care. Without state-of-the-
art medical technology, it is impossible to
deliver top quality medical care. This is why
the SLK Clinic Network has its own medical
technology department, which closely
co-operates with the industry. By regularly
giving feedback to manufacturers, the SLK
Clinic Network makes an important contri-
bution to development and quality assurance.
Continuous investment in the latest medical
procedures and devices guarantees our
patients a steadily increasing level of treat-
ment. In 2010 and 2011 alone, we invested
over €50 million. For example, we completely
renovated the radiology department in 2010.
The removal of the Neurology Clinic to the
Gesundbrunnen location and its integration
there is a further example. And when it comes
to the new clinic investments at the locations
Gesundbrunnen and Plattenwald, we are
investing almost one-quarter of the total
investment volume of around €300 million in
