Data mining (sometimes called data orknowledge discovery) is the process ofanalyzing data from different perspectives andsummarizing it into useful information -information that can be used to increase

revenue, cuts costs, or both. Data mining software is one of a number of

analytical tools for analyzing data. It allowsusers to analyze data from many differentdimensions or angles, categorize it, and

summarize the relationships identified. Technically, data mining is the process of finding

correlations or patterns among dozens of fieldsin large relational databases.

Huge and complex volumes of data are generated byhealthcare

    activities; un-automated analysis has become impractical;

Too many disease markers (attributes) now available for

decision making Increased demand for health services: (Greater

    awareness, increased life expectancy, )

-Overworked physicians and facilities,Stressful workconditions in ICUs, etc.

DM can generate information that can be useful to allstakeholders in health care, including patients byidentifying effective treatments and best practices.

The existence of insurance fraud and abuse impelsinsurers to use DM

Evidence-based guidelines (in the form ofrules)

    Clinical data (Pharmaceutical data, patient

data, medical treatments, length of stay) Administrative data (Staff skills, Nursing

    care hours, staff leaves, overtime)

    Financial data (Drug costs, treatment

costs, staff salaries, accounting) Organisational data (Facilities, Equipment,

Heath Level Seven (HL7)is an ANSI-accreditedStandards Developing Organization (SDO)

    operating in healthcare arena

Provides standards for data exchange to allow

    interoperability between healthcare informationsystems

HL7 focuses on the clinical and administrative

data domains It is a not-for-profit organization made up of

    volunteers providers, payers, vendors,

    government

document standards (e.g., HL7 CDA),: an exchange model for clinical

    documents.

messaging standards: HL7( v2.x andv3.0):an interoperability specification for

    health and medical transactions.

    Application standards:aninteroperability specification for the

visual integration of user applications eg

    hl7CCOW.

Costs for health care facilities are reduced

By using a HL7 interface engine, health providers can

realize the benefits of existing information systemswithout major reinvestment in new technologies,

lowering costs and extending the life and efficienciesof current systems.

There is also opportunity to link to systems outside thehealthcare provider such as providers of outsourcedservices like radiology and transcription.

The HL7 interface also improves work flow by allowingmedical professionals to focus on their core businessactivities and provide quality healthcare.

    Screening:Effective low-cost screening using disease

models that require easily-obtained attributes:(historical, questionnaires, simple measurements)

Diagnosis:Assist in decision making with a large

number of inputs and in stressful situations.

Therapy:Based on modeled historical performance, select best intervention course: e.g. best

    treatment plans in radiotherapy

    Biomedical/Biological Analysis:Analyzing blood

    and urine- Tracking glucose levels

    Hospital Management:Optimize allocation of

resources and assist in future planning for

    improved services eg.

-Forecasting patient volume, ambulance runvolume, etc.- Predicting length-of-stay for

incoming patients Medical Instruction and Training :Disease
