Taking pharmacy studies to global levels

Pharmacy education in the country is set to undergo a sea-change in the next few years. The introduction of Pharm D., a six-year integrated postgraduate programme, is expected to take the country’s pharmacy education to international levels.

Bright future for diploma holders in pharmacy

Did not get into B.Pharmacy course this year? There is no need to despair. For those who are serious about getting into pharmacy courses here is a golden opportunity that could not only provide an immediate job, but also a seat in the B. Pharma course directly into second year. The only drawback, one could say, is that it would take one more year extra to complete the B. Pharm course.

The demand for professionally-qualified nurses and nursing tutors is increasing day-by-day in the country and abroad. This demand is likely to continue in the future also. To rise further in the profession, with the option of being engaged in teaching assignments, a Master’s degree course in nursing is indeed a good choice.

THE INDIAN INSTITUTE OF CROP PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY (IICPT)

THANJAVUR

The Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology (IICPT) is a pioneer Research and Development Institute under the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India. The Institute has its origin way back in 1967 when it was started as a R & D laboratory in the Modern Rice Mill complex of Thanjavur Co-operative Marketing Federation (TCMF) at Tiruvarur. The mandate of the Institute at its inception was to seek solutions for preserving high moisture paddy because the paddy harvest season in Southern India coincided with the tail end of the South West monsoon. The Institute was later upgraded as a national laboratory under the name Paddy Processing Research Centre (PPRC) in 1972. At the time of up-gradation the mandates of the Institute were also changed and the scientists in the Institute focused their research in identifying technologies for post harvest processing and preservation of paddy. The Institute was moved to its current location at Thanjavur in 1984. The IICPT signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Annamalai University which facilitates offering B.Tech. (Food Process Engineering), M.Tech. (Food Process Engineering) and Ph.D. courses. The courses are offered jointly by both the organizations on a twinning mode. The IICPT is authorized to conduct these academic programs independently at its premises.

Many banks are offering education loans at varied rates of interest and students need to do extensive research to ensure that they get the best deal.

Look out for stiff upper limits and collateral requirements before you take the plunge. It’s no secret that studying professional courses means shelling out big bucks. Be it in India or abroad, a medical/management/engineering degree can burn a sizeable hole in one’s pocket.

Bank officials say the interest rates for education loans are distinctly lower than those for personal loans and the amount is not compounded for the education period, which means that the recovery of loan starts after the studies are over.

The Tamil Nadu government has added some new courses and relaxed admission rules for certain paramedical courses, providing students an opportunity to choose a career in allied

Sanitary sciences

The Gandhi Gram Rural Institute, Dindigul, conducts a one-year post-graduate diploma in Sanitary sciences. The PG diploma is offered to candidates with a B.Sc. degree in Chemistry. Each year the institute admits 25 candidates, who are selected through an entrance examination. The subjects for the entrance test include chemistry and sanitation. A similar course was conducted about 15 years ago by medical colleges but was later discontinued. A qualified sanitary inspector would be appointed by the corporation or the municipality and is responsible for birth/death certification, and for conducting school health programmes. The sanitary inspector is also given authority to provide sanitation certificates to schools and check for discrepancies while issuing licences to schools.

Overseas nursing career

The professional success of even the most competent specialist doctor often requires the support and assistance of skilled nurses and paramedical personnel. Nurses from India have made their mark at the global level in the matter of competence and dedication to duty. There is a large demand for good nurses in the western countries, especially the U.S. The remuneration is handsome. However, those with a basic nursing qualification obtained in India cannot straightaway join the nursing service there.

The four-year B.S. optometry course will provide students with a scientific understanding of vision and develop their clinical skills for professional practice. Students who pass out have a number of career options, the course organizers say, such as independent practice, retail optometrist outlets, employment in eye hospitals, teaching and working for the contact lens industry.

The country needs at least 45,000 optometrists.

Applications are available at Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, 19, Cathedral Road, Chennai - 600 086, ph: 044-28112525; e-mail: optometry@dragarwal. Com.

Audiometricians

Audiometricians are urgently required by ENT specialists but they are in short supply. Now that the government has launched its National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness, the need is more acutely felt, the specialists say.

An audiometrician is as important to the field of ENT as an optometrist is to ophthalmology. But, most audiometricians are trained in-house and later absorbed by the hospital.

The All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore, offers extension classes in 12 centres. The virtual mode course admits students who have passed Class XII through the science stream.

The course is offered in Puducherry’s JIPMER, Mumbai, Cuttack, Jabalpur, Ranchi, Imphal, Lucknow, New Delhi, Ajmer and Shimla. The students get practical training in hospital during the morning hours. The afternoon sessions are devoted to theory classes that are beamed across all the centres.

In many private universities and institutions, where a degree course in audiology is offered, audiometry is taught as part of the course. Audiometry tests are used to detect hearing problems and are not a diagnostic method. An audiometrist helps evaluate hearing loss, identifies impairment and advises on medical treatment.

Audiometry test done at the Sri Ramachandra University’s audiology and speech therapy department. But, there are not enough audiometrists.

A qualified candidate can expect to earn Rs. 5,000 to 10,000. Candidate could also opt for a B.Sc. in audiology and they are offered exemptions based on their qualification and experience. The audiometrist is authorized to instruct the employees on using protective

equipment for the ear and taking steps to reduce noise levels. The audiometrist helps identify hearing protection zones and restricts access to noisy areas.

Optometry, a rewarding career

Ever considered pursuing a career in optometry? Did you know that it is one among the top 10 income-earning professions internationally? With the demand for optometrists increasing phenomenally during the past few years, it is emerging as a rewarding career option for those interested in patient care, research and education.

Optometry combines the humanistic touch of medicine and the technological challenges of engineering. Optometrists provide comprehensive eye and vision care. Their job involves detecting, diagnosing and managing eye diseases and help rehabilitate individuals with permanent vision loss.

At present it is estimated that there are about 8,000 fully-qualified optometrists in the country, which is way too less when compared to the number of cases. The number amounts to one optometrist for every 1.25 lakh people and there is a lot of demand for qualified professionals, says Vijaya K. Gothwal, Head of Department, Meera and L.B. Deshpande Centre for Sight Enhancement, L.V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad.

Some of the optometrists even take up scientific research apart from academics and management and marketing. Optometrists can also take up jobs in the contact lens, spectacle manufacturing, optical devices manufacturing units and pharmaceuticals. They have an advantage as they can address issues such as product design.

Also, special grants are available for optometrists to pursue higher education abroad, apart from getting jobs once they finish the course.

It is one of the few courses where students get scholarships easily to pursue education in international colleges. And once the student graduates, their starting salary is around Rs.15,000 to Rs. 30,000 per month.

The four-year course is split into eight semesters. During the first two years, students will deal with theoretical aspects of optometry and the clinical experience at the institute will be for last two years. At the end of the course, students will be awarded the Bachelor of Science (BS) optometry. Contact 3061 5802, 3061 5803 and e-mail at ‘[email protected]'.

Why not BPHS?

The shortened three-and-a-half year BRMS course (Bachelor in Rural Medicine and Surgery), proposed by the Medical Council of India, needs a fresh look. The reason for this new course is based on the opinion that MBBS graduates are reluctant to serve in the rural areas.

The eligibility for the BRMS course is 10+2 like the regular MBBS course, but the selection is open for rural students prepared to serve in rural areas.

The entry, selection, opportunities and further career choices are similar. The syllabus and curriculum differs. The BPHS with emphasis on Public Health, Primary Care, Family Welfare, Demography, Environment, may serve the rural areas better. Internship should be in rural areas with exposure to Therapeutic Medicine.

A career with tremendous scope

Physician assistant (PA) programme is an American concept. This profession came into existence in the U.S. in the mid-1960s due to the shortage and uneven geographic distribution of primary care physicians, says Dr. Philomena Mariadoss, Dean, Madras Medical Mission, Chennai.
