about the foundation

of North Carolina, Inc. advances excellence and leadership in

education, research, and patient care by raising and managing

private financial support for the UNC School of Medicine and

UNC Hospitals. Founded in 1949 as an independent charitable

not-for-profit organization and overseen by a volunteer board

of directors and executive committee, the Foundation rais-

es millions of dollars in new gifts each year. The Foundation

manages 1,100 separate accounts supporting virtually every

department and center, including endowments for professor-

ships, research, lectureships, academic programs, scholarships,

fellowships, facilities and equipment purchases, and other

activities. Gifts are received annually from friends, alumni,

corporations, foundations, and community organizations.

Today, invested funds total more than $170 million and total

assets exceed $193 million. The work of the Foundation serves

to inform and involve generous supporters in the advancement

of initiatives and programs that influence health care across

North Carolina, the nation, and the world.

Looking aheadwas a very difficult task a year ago. Given the

tremendous economic uncertainty, we asked

ourselves, “Would old and new friends continue

to support our missions of teaching, healing

and discovery, even when their own resources

had declined considerably?”

The answer wasan unequivocal “yes.” The School of Medicine and UNC Hospitals received almost $94

million in total commitments for fiscal year 2009, fueled in large part by generous grants

from private foundations to our hardworking faculty. While the 15-percent decrease in

commitments from the year before was significant, it was consistent with giving to the

university as a whole—and much less dramatic than decreases experienced by other

non-profits across the US.

We had several million-dollar highlights in this $94 million: $1 million in combined

Loyalty and Excellence Fund receipts for the third consecutive year; $1 million in unre-

stricted gifts to NC Children’s Hospital for the first time ever; $1 million in private gifts

for the NC Cancer Hospital; and a $1 million gift from a new donor for patient care. And

we had some multi-million dollar highlights as well: a $2.6 million pledge for medical stu-

dent scholarships; a $4.7 million bequest for the transplant program and the UNC Kidney

Center; and a $5 million bequest commitment for two professorships in diabetes research.

Certainly another highlight was marking the 60th anniversary of the founding of the

Medical Foundation. We held our spring executive committee meeting in the very same

room at the Carolina Inn on the very same date, May 28th, as the first meeting in 1949.

After some particularly lively conversation, I was struck by the notion that our board

must be just as engaged and energized as that first group led by Dr. L.P. McLendon.

As we look ahead again, we do so having learned some valuable lessons in this changed

economy: we have become more articulate about the gifts we ask for and even better

stewards of the gifts we receive. And in weathering the downturn together, I know we

will have strong partners—old and new—in supporting healing, discovery and patient

care at UNC for many years to come.

The Medical Foundation celebrated a milestone on May 28, 2009—60 years

of service to the UNC School of Medicine and UNC Hospitals. The Foundation was chartered in 1949 as

a 501(c)(3) charitable not-for-profit to address the growing need to raise private endowed funds for the

School and hospitals.

The first meeting of the Foundation was held in the Carolina Inn’s “Faculty Club Room,” now known sim-

ply as the Club Room, on May 28, 1949. Notable attendees at this meeting included Dr. W. Reese Berryhill,

then dean of the School of Medicine, the Foundation’s acting secretary, and a member of its executive

committee; L.P. McLendon, temporary president of the Foundation during its “planning stage”; Dr. H.O.

Lineberger, a member of the Foundation’s executive committee; Henry A. Lineberger; Hyman Battle; and

Dr. George Johnson.

To commemorate the occasion, The Medical Foundation

held its spring executive committee meeting in the very

spot the Foundation came into being exactly 60 years pri-

or, the Carolina Inn’s Club Room, on May 28.

“The Foundation provides an invaluable resource that en-

ables the School to do things it otherwise simply could not

do,” said Foundation President David Anderson. “We are

fortunate to have had thousands of donors over the last

60 years who believe strongly in our missions of teach-

ing new physicians, researching potential new cures, and

practicing compassionate patient care.” A meeting of officers of the Medical Foundation of North Carolina, early 1950s. Seated left to right are Collier Cobb, Jr., Lennox P. McLendon, and george Watts Hill. Standing left to right are Drs. H.o. Lineberger, Harry L. Brockmann, William M. Coppridge, Paul Whitaker, and Shahane r. Taylor. (UNC Photo Lab, NCC)

The North Carolina Lions Club

Foundation has given $196,000 to UNC’s Department

of Ophthalmology for the purchase of research and

diagnostic imaging equipment. Travis A. Meredith, MD, chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology,

acknowledged the gift at the NC Lions State Convention held last spring.

“[The gift] has already benefited thousands of our patients. Without the community support of our mis-

sion, we would be limited in the service we can provide to those who come to us for eye care. To all Lions

and to our other donors, we extend our heartfelt appreciation,” said Meredith.

The gift fully supported the purchase of an optical coherence tomography unit (OCT) and a fundus

camera. An OCT provides three-dimensional imaging and assists in clarifying the disease process and

the results of treatments through various drugs and/or procedures. A fundus camera is a low-power

microscope used in photographing the interior surface of the eye.

The Lions’ gift also provided the balance of funds needed to complete the fundraising for a RetCam, a

special camera that allows the physician to obtain peripheral retinal images from the eyes of premature

infants. The camera has enabled the UNC Department of Ophthalmology to participate in a multicenter

national clinical trial on the retinopathy of prematurity. Images captured with the RetCam are stored in

a central database where they can then be compared with images from other centers. The purchase of

the RetCam was first made possible with two other grants from Prevent Blindness North Carolina and

the A.E. Finley Foundation. For more information on UNC’s Department of Ophthalmology and the UNC

Kittner Eye Center, visit www.unceyecare.org.

Lewis and Kim

Barnhardt is

a substantial

affirmation

of the value of

our CASTLE

program to the

deaf children

in North

Carolina.”

nCfi/barnhardt foundation Creates

first endowMent for CastLe prograM

In 1993, Kim and Lewis Barnhardt of Charlotte, NC, learned their infant

daughter Betsy was profoundly deaf. Like all parents, they immediately sought to do

whatever they could to help her lead a normal life.

“We were opening every door to try to find a solution,” says Lewis. During their search

for answers, they discovered the cochlear implant team at UNC through resources in the

Charlotte area. “Since it was closer than the other options we explored, we began look-

ing into what UNC could do for Betsy.”

The Barnhardts brought Betsy to UNC Hospitals’ Department of Otolaryngology/Head

and Neck Surgery, where Betsy would receive a cochlear implant one week after her

second birthday.

With support from the W. Paul Biggers Carolina Children’s Communicative Disorders

Program (CCCDP) at UNC and specialized speech therapy, Betsy, now 16, is a main-

streamed student and a multi-sport athlete at her high school in Charlotte.

Last year, the North Carolina Foam Industries (NCFI)/Barnhardt Foundation generously

pledged $500,000 to create a new, permanent endowment for the Center for Acquisition

of Spoken language Through Listening Enrichment (CASTLE). The CASTLE program

provides auditory-oral early intervention and preschool services to children who are

deaf or hard of hearing and their families. CASTLE teaches and supports the parents/

caregivers, as the primary teachers of their children, to promote healthy relationships

and to foster a language-rich environment for the children.

“Traditionally, the NCFI/Barnhardt Foundation had the philosophy of trying to give a

little bit to a lot of people, instead of focusing on large gifts. But we began looking at op-

portunities where we can make a larger impact and this was a great opportunity for us

to take a first step in that direction,” says Lewis.

Called the NCFI/Barnhardt Directorship Endowment, it is the CASTLE program’s first

endowment. Payout from the endowment will be used to provide financial support to the

CASTLE program, as well as allow the director more flexibility to concentrate on their

most important responsibility—patient care.

“The Barnhardt’s generosity will help ensure the stability of our program,” says Hannah

Eskridge, director of CASTLE. “We’re excited because this is a resource that will grow,

and it will allow us to continue to provide therapy and preschool services to children

who are deaf and hard of hearing and to provide training for public school professionals

and early interventionists throughout North Carolina.”

“The gift from Lewis and Kim Barnhardt is a substantial affirmation of the value of

our CASTLE program to the deaf children in North Carolina,” says Harold C. Pillsbury,

MD, Thomas J. Dark distinguished professor, chair of UNC’s Department of Otolar-

yngology/Head and Neck Surgery, and executive director of the CCCDP. “Each of them

will benefit from the Barnhardt’s incredible generosity because the future of CASTLE

will be further guaranteed. Teachers in our schools who have cochlear implant children

in their classes will be empowered to treat them like all the others in their classes—

because they are.”
