he Medical Foundation of North Carolina, Inc.

advances excellence and leadership in education,

research, and patient care by raising and managing private

financial support for the UNC School of Medicine and UNC

Hospitals. Founded in 1949 as an independent charitable not-for-profit

organization and overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors and

Executive Committee, the Foundation raises millions of dollars in new

gifts each year. The Foundation manages 1,100 separate accounts

supporting virtually every department and center, including en-

dowments for professorships, research, lectureships, academic

programs, scholarships, fellowships, facilities and equipment

purchases, and other activities. Gifts are received annually from

friends, alumni, corporations, foundations, and community or-

ganizations. Today, invested funds total more than $215 million

and total assets exceed $230 million.

The work of the Foundation serves to inform and involve generous

supporters in the advancement of initiatives and programs that influence

health care across North Carolina, the nation, and the world.

So I simply want to remind you how important

you are to this place that we love so much.

ndoubtedly the highlight of the last fiscal year for the

Medical Foundation was the close of the Carolina First campaign

on December 31st. The eight-year campaign was not only the most

successful in the history of UNC-Chapel Hill, but also was the fifth

most successful campaign ever in the United States. The $610 million raised

for the School of Medicine and UNC Hospitals during that time represents the generosity

of many, many caring people. All aspects of our mission to educate, to discover and to heal

benefited from this incredible support.

As I write this, the world is a very different place than last December, or even this past

June. So I want to simply remind you how important you are to this place that we love so

much. Miracles of hope and healing happen every day at the School of Medicine and UNC

Hospitals. Through your continued financial support, miracles will continue to happen.

n fall 2007, the Battle Foundation of Rocky Mount board of directors

established the Hyman L. Battle Distinguished Cancer Research Award,

a permanent endowment held by The Medical Foundation of North Caro-

lina, Inc., in support of cancer research at the University of North Carolina

at Chapel Hill.

Last spring, Yi Zhang, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and biophysics in the UNC School

of Medicine, was awarded the first Battle award in recognition of his work. The award is

coordinated through the dean’s office at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine.

The award recognizes exceptional cancer research at the medical school and comes with

a $25,000 prize. The Battle Foundation has supported the Medical Foundation for more

than 30 years through support of the Hyman L. Battle Distinguished Excellence in Teach-

ing Awards for the Basic and Clinical Sciences. These $1,000 awards were increased to

$5,000 each in 2008.

“My family has been involved with The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and

the Medical School for generations. We are pleased to indicate that the Battle Foundation

will continue to contribute to UNC Medicine and to cancer research in this way,” said

Tom Battle.

Zhang, a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, is an interna-

tionally recognized scientist in the area of chromatin, a genetic material. He received the

Gertrude Elion Award in 2003 from the American Association of Cancer Research and

is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. A testament to the high impact of his

work came recently from the research information company, Thomson Scientific, which

ranked Zhang 7th worldwide in numbers of high impact citations in the area of molecular

biology and genetics.

Hyman L. Battle (1896–1972) established The Battle Foundation in 1946. Like his grand-

father Kemp Plummer Battle, president of the University after the Civil War, Hyman was

deeply interested in education. He was a volunteer leader of several educational insti-

tutions, including UNC-Chapel Hill, which he attended from 1914 to 1916. During the

1950s, he served on the executive committee of the Good Health Association.

Also an outstanding business and civic leader, Hyman served as a director of a number of

corporations and was chairman of the board of Rocky Mount Mills, founded in 1818 by

his great-great-grandfather.

learly unbothered by the brace holding her arm or the constant tether

of her IV pole, a young cancer patient sang her heart out for an audi-

ence gathered in the Play Atrium on the seventh floor of N.C. Children’s

Hospital. The song was one of her own.

The performance last June coincided with a $20,000 donation from the Rock Against Can-

cer Foundation (RAC) to the School of Rock music therapy program at the hospital. But it

was clear that nine-year-old patient Eleanor Bothwell stole the show.

Since being diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2007, Eleanor has spent more than 120 days

in NC Children’s Hospital. During her time there she has enjoyed, and now contributed

back to, its music therapy program. Though Eleanor doesn’t play any instruments, “I just

got bored one day, and I decided to write a song,” she said.

Her song is titled “You are Yourself.” The powerful lyrics are about standing up for yourself

and saying what you mean, no matter how scared you are. “I’m very honored and proud of

what Eleanor’s done,” says Elizabeth Fawcett, MT-BC, the hospital’s music therapist. “She

can help other children in the same situation.”

During the performance, Eleanor sang while Fawcett played along on the guitar. After the

song, Eleanor got up to walk to a drum set on the other side of the room, but was tugged

back by her IV pole. She’d completely forgotten it was there at all. It seemed a good testament

to the impact of music therapy—the reason everyone was gathered there in the first place.

The RAC, a national nonprofit organization that supports music therapy programs for

young cancer patients, helped establish a School of Rock music therapy program, the

first of its kind, at the NC Children’s Hospital in February 2006. There are now eight such

School of Rock programs in hospitals around the US. The funds donated last June are the

latest installment from RAC, bringing the total donated to UNC Health Care by the group

to $50,000.

Currently, NC Children’s Hospital’s music room is equipped with several keyboards, two

guitars, drums, microphones and even a digital recording studio.

“I think we could take the program to a whole new level,” said Laurie Reddick, MA, direc-

tor of Recreational Therapy and Child Life. “I would like to do a lot more. I feel like it could

be utilized much more with more ability to have Elizabeth here.”

“The benefits are enormous,” says Lisa White, founder of RAC, about music therapy. “We

know there’s healing properties to the music. It’s proven so beneficial to kids emotion-

ally, physically.”

Fawcett says music is extremely therapeutic, and that her patients know that their sessions

are going to be a positive experience, and that they’re going to be fun. “It’s great to see the

smiles on their faces,” Fawcett said.

When the children are too sick to come to the Music Room, Fawcett brings the lessons to

their rooms. “It makes you feel better,” says Eleanor. “It makes you feel cared about.”

n April 2008, the School of Medicine’s Department of Ophthalmology

received the largest gift in its history—a $1 million commitment from

UNC alumnus David Kittner in partnership with the Samuel and Rebecca

Kardon Foundation—to establish an endowed innovation fund for the depart-

ment’s future.

On June 12, in recognition of Kittner’s and the foundation’s generosity, the depart-

ment’s facility at UNC’s Ambulatory Care Center was dedicated and named the

Kittner Eye Center.

Kittner’s nephew, Sam Kittner, a 1985 Carolina alumnus, gave a special presentation

honoring his uncle and remarks were offered by Chancellor James Moeser; Etta Pisano,

vice dean of academic affairs for the School of Medicine; and Travis Meredith, depart-

ment chair and the Sterling A. Barrett Distinguished Professor of Ophthalmology.

“Our future is much brighter now,” Meredith said when the gift was first announced.

“The need for ophthalmology services is increasing, and this endowment will help us pro-

vide even more advanced and technologically sophisticated services for our patients.”

For Kittner, the gift represents his strong love for Carolina and his deep appreciation

for good vision, particularly after witnessing how various members of his family and

others benefited from advanced eye care. “I thought that the gift would be a great way

to help people well into the future,” he said. “I look forward to seeing the advancements

the center will continue to make.”

Annual expendable funds earned from the endowment will be used for patient care

projects such as the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment, technology, clinical re-

search, education and other focused projects. The specific use of funds will be approved

annually by the department’s chair.

The goal of the ophthalmology department’s research and education activities is to in-

crease knowledge of patient care options that will ultimately lead to improved vision or

cures for blinding eye diseases, while at the same time training the next generation of

ophthalmologists. Major multicenter national clinical trials are currently under way at

UNC on diseases such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of

prematurity. The department is also pursuing internationally recognized translational

glaucoma research, with the goal of improving patient care after testing new discoveries

in clinical trials.

Patient visit numbers per year for eye care at UNC have more than doubled from 1993

to 2007. The needs for ophthalmologic care are expected to continue increasing as more

baby boomers retire and North Carolina’s population continues to grow. Over the next

three to four years, it is estimated that annual patient visits will increase by more than

25 percent.

A 1939 UNC graduate with a business administration degree, Kittner now practices

law in Philadelphia. In addition, he has two brothers, three nieces and two nephews

who all have degrees from UNC. Previously, Kittner and the Kardon Foundation—a

charitable foundation based in Philadelphia—have given more than $300,000 to vari-

ous components of the University, primarily to the Rose and Louis Kittner Scholarship

Fund, which provides need-based scholarships for undergraduate students.
