for Minimally and Less Invasive Therapies

Medical Devices for Delivery and AccessCreganna-Tactx Medical design, develop and manufacture medicaldevices on behalf of its customers. The company specializes inmedical devices that provideaccess or deliver clinicaltreatments to various areas of thebody. These devices range fromlong thin catheters that navigateto the brain or heartto laparoscopic devices used inkey-hole surgery. All of the devicesdesigned and manufactured byCreganna-Tactx Medical are usedin an advanced surgical approachcalled minimally invasive (MI) surgery.

About Minimally Invasive SurgeryAn alternative to open surgery, minimally and lessinvasive therapies use naturally occurring pathwaysof the body, such as the vascular system, to accessa treatment area and deliver a medical therapy. There are many advantages of minimally invasive(MI) surgery – less trauma to the patient, hospitalstays and recovery times are significantly reducedand in general, this surgical approach is less costlythan open surgery. Owing to these advantages, there has been widespread adoption of minimallyinvasive surgical approaches in hospital settingsover the last number of years. There is eagernessby patients, physicians and health insuranceproviders to rapidly adopt minimally invasivealternatives to traditional surgery. In turn, theminimally invasive medical device industry hasdeveloped to become a fast growing, exciting andhighly innovative sector.

MI Surgery in action: The HeartCoronary artery disease results in blockages forming within the coronary arteries in the form of a plaque which can leadto cardiac arrest (heart attack) and is often fatal. Coronary artery disease can develop due to genetic, hereditary, diet orlifestyle factors and is the #1 fatal disease in the Western World. To treat coronary artery disease a surgeon seeks towiden the blood vessel that has become narrowed or blocked thereby ensuring normal blood flow resumes to the heartmuscle. Traditionally this treatment was delivered during an open surgical procedure called Coronary Artery BypassGrafting or simply “by-pass” surgery. Coronary Angioplasty is a Minimally Invasive alternative to unblocking the diseasedartery. During this procedure a small incision is made at the top of the patient’s leg and a long thin balloon catheter isinserted and navigated by the cardiologist to the blocked coronary artery. The balloon is then inflated inside the artery towiden the blockage and the cardiologist may then choose to leave behind a small metal scaffold called a stent tominimize the risk of future narrowing of the artery. This Minimally Invasive approach significantly reduces the cost andrecovery time associated with treating coronary artery disease.

MI Surgery in action: The BrainBrain aneuryms are abnormal bulges in the arteries of the brain. Should an aneurysm rupture it can lead to internal bleedingknown as a brain hemorrhage causing stroke, brain damage or death. When an aneurysm is found, treatment is provided toprevent it from rupturing. The goal of treatment is stop blood flow into the aneurysm. Open surgery, the traditional treatmentapproach, is highly invasive and involves removing part of the skull to access and manually clip the aneurysm. A MinimallyInvasive alternative has emerged known as Embolization. During Embolization a long catheter is threaded through thebody under X-ray guidance from the leg to the site of the aneurysm in the brain. Once the aneurysm has beenreached, tiny metal coils or surgical glues are released into the aneurysm to stop blood flow in that area.Clinical studies estimate that the average recovery time for open surgery can be one year whereas theaverage recovery time for a Minimally Invasive Embolization approach is 27 days.

Embolization: Metal coils totreat brain aneurysm.
