High Road Dermatology offers skin care solutions By Teresa Dovalpage
In September 2014, Dr. Laurie Good opened High Road Dermatology, a comprehensive practice that provides medical, pediatric
and cosmetic dermatology. It now has offices in the Taos Professional Building (sharing space with Taos Surgical Specialties) and in Santa Fe.
Dr. Good treats skin diseases with systemic medications, topical treatments, chemical peels and laser treatments. The services she offers include skin biopsies, excisions, skin tag removal, intralesional injections, cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen), chemical peels and Botox, Xeomin and Dysport injections, as well as dermal fillers like Voluma, Juvederm, Belotero and Radiesse.
She also treats benign growths, rashes, me-lasma, all causes of acne and rosacea, among other conditions.
“Often, people just learn to live with skin conditions,” Dr. Good said. “But there isn’t a
need to. When your skin is clear and healthy, you feel good about the way you look and your quality of life improves.”
Recently, Dr. Good offered a series of free skin screenings in Taos, Red River, Angel Fire, Questa and Peñasco to detect skin cancer, spe-cifically melanoma, as early as possible.
“Many Northern New Mexicans are at high risk for developing skin cancer because the UV exposure from the sun, combined with the high altitude, can result in skin damage,” she said. “Prevention is very important. Although melanoma can occur at any age, people should have roughly all their moles by the age of 30, so any new mole that appears after that is sus-picious until proven otherwise. It’s better to be overly cautious than to ignore a potential problem.”

From Georgetown to TaosDr. Good went to medical school at George-
town University in Washington D.C., where she started the International Health Group at the university and led many medical trips overseas. She chose the dermatology field after diagnos-ing and treating children with skin diseases in the international orphanage setting.
“It was there when my eyes were opened to the impact that skin disease can have on a per-son’s quality of life,” she said.
During medical school and residency, she volunteered her time in free community health centers, STD clinics, men’s homeless shelters and a women’s shelter for domestic violence survivors.
She also volunteered with Indian Health Services in Shiprock and traveled all over New Mexico.
“I spent some time here and fell in love with Taos and its wonderful and eclectic people,” she said. “When Taos Health Systems offered me the opportunity to work here, all my family was really excited about it. It proved to be the right place to come. Now we feel totally at home in Taos.”
The teamThe High Road Dermatology team is com-
prised of Dr. Good; Tim Busch, PA-C, a derma-tology physician assistant who is also the first member of the Society of Dermatology Physi-cian Assistants in New Mexico; cosmetologist and medical assistant Anastasia Menkhaus; nurse Jessica Heimenz; and Jeanette Sanchez, a licensed esthetician who also serves as their medical assistant in Santa Fe.
To schedule an appointment with Dr. Good, call High Road Dermatology at (575) 751-0334.
High Road Dermatology is located at 1399 Weimer Road, Suite 600.

“I am Independent!”“It’s home,” said Delphine Mead, a two-year resident of The Bridge Independent and Assisted Living Center in Alamosa.
She said her retirement home is “nice and convenient, with no cooking or housework to do. It’s all done for you.”
A native of the Western Slope of Colorado, Delphine and husband George were married in 1955 and she went to teach elementary school in Center. Her husband was band director in Del Norte before the couple moved to New Mexico for five years.
They returned to Alamosa in 1961 and opened Mead’s Music where George sold and repaired band instruments through 1997, serv-ing up to 12 local bands at a time. The couple traveled to Tennessee, Wisconsin and Illinois to receive training in instruments repair from their manufacturers.
Delphine said she enjoys working on puzzles and The Bridge and was excited to help with the second annual “Boxes of Love” project for Valentine’s Day.

Herbs are the basis of most all mod-ern drugs and have many different properties when used as medicine. Some properties are simple and
easy to understand and some have very com-plex pharmacology.
One of the things I like best about using herbs as medicine are the very easy-to-under-stand ways they can be used. I like to call these the “Simple Principals.” Once one understands these principals, with just a very few herbs — perhaps just four plants — one has the tools to treat many different aliments.
Here is brief discussion of these simple principals:
BITTERS — Bitter is a taste that most of us so rarely encounter that many people do not even know what the taste is. Often people will say “oh bitter, you mean like a lemon”. Lem-ons are sour, not bitter. The taste of bitter on the tongue helps turn on the digestive process.
This is because the taste of bitter gently stimu-lates the vagus nerve (located at the base of the brain), which turns on our digestive system, including the production of saliva, enzymes of the pancreas and the motion of the intestine — called peristalsis — that pushes food through our body. Sipping a bitter before meals is a great way to help prevent indigestion and heartburn and to strengthen our digestion overall. It is very important that the bitter tea is sipped slowly over a period of 10-15 minutes. Gentain root (gentiana spp.) is the most famous bitter but our local chamiso pardo — or sagebrush (artemisia tridentada) — works very well too.
ASTRINGENTS — Astringents have the ef-fect of binding proteins, you will have personal experience with this if you have ever had lem-onade in your mouth. The sensation of your mouth feeling “rough” is evidence that the as-tringent properties of the lemon have bound and denatured the protein in the mucous that lines your mouth. As medicine astringents cool, tighten and reduce inflammation in the

tissues they contact. Some examples are the use of rose petals — rosa de castillo in Spanish — (rosa canina) as a gentle astringent for the eyes to reduce irritation and redness.
Stronger astringents like uva ursi leaves (arctostapholos uva ursi) can be used to treat sunburn, diarrhea, bladder infections or as a “sitz bath” for post partum moms and hem-morhoids.
DEMULCENTS — Demulcents have the property of being slippery and soothing. Herbs such as malva — malbas in Spanish — (malva neglecta), marshmallow root (althaea offici-nalis) and slippery elm bark (ulmus fulva) are used to soothe and moisten dry, irritated tis-sues like those found in sore throats or the lin-ing of the intestine after days of diarrhea. One of my favorite demulcent herbs is ground flax seed — linasa in Spanish — (linum spp). A tea made of ground flax is one of the most effective remedies for irritated esophagus due to acid re-flux and helping to heal ulcers of the stomach.
AROMATICS — Herbs with volatile oils like peppermint — menta in Spanish — (men-tha piperita) and rosemary — romero in Span-ish — (romarinus officinalis) do many things in the body, including being antiseptic and ex-pectorant (loosening mucous in the lungs) and they tend to increase perspiration. Herbs that increase perspiration are called diaphoretics and are use to lower fever by increasing evapo-rative cooling of the skin. Volatile oils also have the effect of stimulating the menstrual cycle and relieving menstrual cramps and tummy cramps. Osha (ligusticum porteri) is my favor-ite aromatic herbs and has been used for all of these and more.
Consult your health care practitioner about the use of herbs or supplements, especially if you are taking prescription medication.

Let me ask a few simple questions for five minutes. I’ll give you a free and frank assessment as to whether I can help. I’m not a lawyer and this is no lawsuit. I am a national expert on EEOICPA en-titlement. You get me, the professional, not a low paid paraflunkie. I unravel the frustrating red tape so you don’t have to. Nobody does it better. You get paid directly by the U.S. Treasury. If so, then you pay me just 2%. No appeal fees. No fine print. Already got your $100,000 RECA award as ura-nium miner, miller or transporter? I might now be able to get you another $50,000 under EEOICPA Part B, plus Part E benefits (impairment or survivor awards).

Holy Cross Hospital’s award-winning Taos First Steps Home Visiting pro-gram is celebrating eight years of service to families in our community.
First Steps is a free program for families with young children.
The program provides resources and support to help raise strong and happy families. First Steps Home Visitors are available to discuss par-enting triumphs and trials, to listen to the joys and concerns and support families along the way — from prenatal until the child’s third birthday.
At the foundation of the program is the home visitor’s relationship with the family. The home visitor is dedicated to being responsive to a fam-ily’s priorities, needs and concerns.
Together families and home visitors establish family goals and then work as a team to accom-plish them.
Families are given the information, resources and tools they might need to become confident advocates for themselves and for their children.
The Taos First Steps home visitors also work with other community organizations to help families navigate the systems that are available to reduce parenting stress. That leaves families with more time and energy for the joys of parenting.
Taos First Steps Home Visitors will:• See families in the convenience of their home• Answer questions about a child’s development• Listen and offer support and guidance• Help connect families with resources in the community• Offer friendly, compassionate and non-judg-mental support
Studies have shown that families who receive an in-home visit by a trained professional do better on a whole range of outcomes, including improved prenatal health, decreased depen-dence on social services, increased child litera-cy and more. Parents who are supported in this way are more likely to help their children shine and meet their full potential.
Taos First Steps is a Holy Cross Hospital pro-gram. The program has been a part of hundreds of families’ lives in Taos County since 2007. They recently received an expansion of their existing grant that allows them to provide services to any family from prenatal to three in Taos County. For more information, call (575) 751-3652 or visit taoshealth.com/childrenandfamilyservices/First-Steps.

Acupuncture is a component of Tra-ditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has been practiced for thousands of years. It entails the stimulation
of specific points on the body by a variety of techniques, including insertion of thin metal needles through the skin to remove blockages in the flow of “qi” or energy and restores bal-ance in the body. While acupuncture has been used to address a wide array of ailments over the years — pain, asthma, arthritis, multiple sclero-sis and more, it has also been found very effec-tive in treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) — the most prevalent mental health disorder in Veterans.
PTSD is classified in the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders” as an anxiety disorder characterized by one month or more of impairment by symptoms that follow a traumatic event that was highly threatening and caused a response of intense fear, helplessness, or horror. PTSD patients also commonly expe-rience depression, sleep disorders, aggressive behavior, emotional distancing, sexual dysfunc-tion and chronic bodily pain.
Veterans in Taos are rejoicing at the idea that the VA is extending healing options to acupuncture.
“Tito,” a Vietnam veteran and Taos resident who has been receiving acupuncture treatments at the Willow Clinic is happy that his treatments
will now be paid by the VA because he has ex-perienced such good results.“My back was so painful that I couldn’t walk. With about eight treatments, she took the pain from a 10 (intense and constant pain) to a 1!”
“Mike,” another veteran and resident of Taos involved in Operation Iraqi Freedom says, “I took pain pills from the VA for 10 years that didn’t work, and after a couple of weeks of acu-puncture, for the first time in 10 years, I have been pain-free for extended periods of time.”
Positive results from alternative therapies are fueling veterans’ increasing demand for acu-puncture and more mindful ways to return to a healthy lifestyle. Procedures veterans need to follow to become eligible by the VA for acupunc-ture treatment:
Veterans need to see their VA primary care provider (PCP) and request a referral for acu-puncture treatments. Such a referral for acu-puncture gets processed into the VA system and goes through a VA review board for approval. Once approved an authorization number is is-sued to the veteran and acupuncture treatments can start.
Caroline Colonna is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine (DOM) who has been practicing at Willow Clinic, a VA-authorized acupuncture clinic since 1998. She is
also a professional athlete and mother of two cool kids.

When a new mother comes home with her baby, she usually just wants to rest and quietly bond with the new-
born. But this isn’t too easy in our modern, rushed world.
“In our culture, a woman is supposed to bounce back a week after the birth and be a su-per mom that cooks and washes dishes while holding the baby,” said certified postpartum doula Tovia Safford. “However, her body needs to recuperate. Postpartum is a very vulnerable time for both mother and baby and that’s when we can help.”
A postpartum doula is a trained professional who provides the mother, and the entire fam-ily, with valuable information about recovering from childbirth, breastfeeding and baby care, among other topics. She also helps with home tasks and errands and prepares healthy meals. Her role is to help the family navigate those first days after bringing home a new baby.
“I come to the home and give the mother
specific care to rebalance and rejuvenate, after the major depletion that comes with pregnancy and birth,” said Safford.
Her protocol has its roots in knowledge from The Vedas, the oldest Hindu texts, but she uses modern techniques as well.
“It is stated in The Vedas that a woman is in a very unique window for the 42 days after birth,” said Safford, who also graduated from the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque. “The body requires special care in order to fully recover. In my practice, I combine the best of two worlds: old Indian traditions and modern methods and techniques in a personalized way.”
“Tovia’s work is very supportive and nurtur-ing on the deepest physiological level,” said Ni-cole Maillis, a licensed midwife who specializes in out-of-hospital births and who has used Saf-ford’s services three times. “She prepares food designed to facilitate digestion, encourage the milk flow and reduce the chances of colic and other common health issues in the newborn.”

Food, oil and herbsSafford’s services include preparing healthy
foods that are appropriate for the postpartum time. If the mother has other children, she can feed them as well.
She comes to the new mom’s home with a whole meal ready (a protein, grains, vegetables and a dessert), and a nutritious snack, which can be stewed pears and figs or apples with dates and raisins.
“After the snack, I give her oleation therapy, which means the application of warm oil to the body while massaging it gently,” she said. “It is very relaxing. I also make restorative herbal formulas. Later, we sit and talk. I offer the mom emotional support and education. My work goes well beyond pampering, though I pamper the mom, of course.”
She uses “kitchen medicine” — herbs, spices and natural fresh products that nourish, heal and soothe.
“It is well documented that, in cultures that honor a postpartum time period of rest and care —around 42 days after the birth — women do not suffer depression or many of the health issues that are considered ‘normal’ in our mod-ern medical perspective,” she said.
“When Tovia came to my house, it was a gift from a friend,” said new mom Leilani Dean. “She gave me a massage and it was so special … exactly what I wanted and needed! It was such a wonderful experience for me and my husband that we decided to hire her to come two more times. Her presence made the whole postpar-tum experience very pleasant and relaxing for me and my family.”
“If you want to have a strong family tree, start by taking care of the roots,” Safford said. “The mother is the root.”

COMPLEMENTARY HEALTH CAREComplementary health care — including wholistic alternatives, Oriental Medicine, and massage and massage therapy — is often best used in conjunction with regular medicine. Different fields of complementary medicine have different certification processes and due diligence on the part of the patient is sometimes required in order to find out whether certain options are indeed the best options for your own health. Talk to your physician and verify a health care provider’s credentials to the best of your ability.

Most people never really give a thought to their probiotics be-yond simply popping a capsule that contains them; they simply
assume that taking probiotics translates into those desirable bacteria becoming established in their intestines as the predominant species. Unfortunately this is not true.
Very few individuals, including most health care professionals, take seriously or are even aware of the assertion of Elie Metchnikov, a Russian bacteriologist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine, who 100 years ago asserted that the most serious and chronic form of toxin exposure leading to illness is often overlooked: auto intoxication from the wrong bacterial, and fungal / yeast populations in the human intestines. Dr. Metchnikov studied how the incorrect bacterial populations damaged the immune system and liver and recommended lactic acid foods such as sauerkraut to correct and prevent this from occurring.
The stomach, small intestines and colon are part of the outside world, despite being inside our bodies. This essentially hollow tube pro-vides a warm, dark, moist environment, which is favorable to the rapid proliferation of count-less species of microscopic life forms. Yet what truly determines what lives in this ecological niche is what those tubes are actually filled with. We have learned that the species of organ-isms found in meat and animal protein domi-nant in human guts is completely different than those found in those individuals who predomi-nantly eat vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, grains and legumes.
It has also been determined that frequent inoculation with bacterial species that thrive on the complex sugars in vegetable matter is unsuccessful since they do not thrive in an environment filled with decaying and putrefy-ing animal carcasses, cheese, milk, etc., where the predominant species are putrefactive in nature. Since bacterial populations turn over extremely quickly in a warm, dark, moist en-vironment, (ie., only a few hours at most), what ultimately lives in the former food matter tran-siting the intestines is not determined simply by what we seed it with, which is what we as-

sume, but rather what species most success-fully colonize that material. Providing oligo-saccharides and varieties of fiber and other carbohydrate substances from a plant-based diet is far more deterministic of establishing favorable bacteria than simply seeding the intestines with the probiotic with the desired bacterial species.
A wrong diet leads to proliferation of un-desirable bacterial and fungal species and their numerous toxic metabolites, while the correct diet leads to the proliferation of bacteria which produce substances which actually inhibit proliferation of undesirable bacterial species and yeast, thereby counter-acting the presence and effects of undesir-able gut organisms. Auto-intoxication by the wrong bacteria involves the production and absorption of toxic bacterial metabolites, which can be produced in large quantities, and which are absorbed into the body and must be detoxified by Phase I and II conjuga-tion in the liver. This is only made possible
by sufficient vitamin and mineral enzyme precursors and co-enzyme factors and an-tioxidants, all substances only found in a plant based diet. These pathogenic bacterial byproducts include: TMAO, putrescine, in-dole and skatol, which are irritants, produc-ing inflammation in many organs, including the arterial walls; ammonia, putrescine and formalin, which are neurotoxins leading to neuronal death in MS and Lou Gehrig’s disease, dementias, (Alzheimer’s), etc.; for-malin, ammonia and cadaverine, which are carcinogenic substances promoting DNA damage and cancer cell initiation and prolif-eration. All these together cause great harm to our bodies.
So, make no assumptions about your pro-biotics establishing a desirable gut bacterial population just because you pop a pill. What thrives there is ultimately determined by diet alone, and with the wrong diet, even repeated inoculation is simply useless.

It is important for us to recognize that we can play a key role in our health and wellness. Our lifestyle choices and habits can enhance or take away from our quality of life. Here are 10 ideas to get us on the right side of health:
Ten tips to improve your healthBy Angie Fernandez
CHANGING HEALTH TIPSContinues on Page 52
Go for a walk — Whether it’s for 10 minutes or 10 miles, walking is a gentle way to get some physical activity and when done outdoors, the fresh air and sunshine can enhance our feelings of joy.
Drink some water — Water is the most important thing you can consume as it plays a vital role in the transportation of nutrients and the flushing out of toxins.
Add some fresh veggies — Adding fresh, uncooked vegetables to any meal is an excellent way to add nutritional value and water as uncooked veg-etables are mostly water. Veggies can be added to regular favorites such as pizza, sandwiches, pasta, enchiladas, Chinese food, etc.

CHANGING HEALTH TIPSContinued from Page 50
Reduce some “naughties” — We all have our vices but if we can just shorten one or some of those “joyous” naughty experiences for something healthier every once in a while, it will make a difference.
Give yourself a break — from electronics. TV, phone, tablet, computer or radio at least for half an hour a day, preferably before bedtime so that your dreams may not be quite so influenced by these distractions.
Be nice to yourself — We are usually so quick to judge and doubt ourselves instead of patting ourselves on the back. Think of some of your favorite qualities about yourself, along with some of your great accomplishments. Doesn’t it feel good to be you when you acknowledge the good stuff?
Share the love — Go out of your way to make others feel special. Open a door for someone, give a compliment, tip extra, buy a stranger a cup of coffee or strike up a conversation with someone you don’t know. We can all make some-one feel special by sharing a little time.
Pray — Religious or not, prayer is an outward expression of our thoughts and can be very powerful. Prayer can be used to share gratitude, ask for what you want or to pray for others. It’s your time, so your choice.
Try something new — don’t be afraid! Get out there and learn something new and bring a friend if needed for moral support. Most people will root for the beginner; you are usually your harshest judge, so leave the judge at home and let yourself out of your comfort zone.

Since 1936, Holy Cross Hospital has gone through many changes. Some of those changes have been easier than others, but the hospital has remained com-
mitted to quality healthcare for the people of Northern New Mexico.
Over the years Holy Cross has evolved from operating within a donated building, to becom-ing a small, rural hospital, then growing to a re-gional facility and finally a health system. This growth has taken determination, perseverance and commitment as well as support from the community.
Today the hospital is a not-for-profit 29 bed, acute-care, full-service facility. It is the cor-nerstone of Taos Health Systems, which was formed in the early 1980s to provide a commu-nity organization providing healthcare services for the people of Taos and surrounding areas. Today, Taos Health Systems Inc. encompasses Holy Cross Hospital, Women’s Health Institute, Taos Surgical Specialties, Center for Physical Health, High Road Dermatology, the Birth
Center and Primary and Integrative Care. Holy Cross Hospital was fortunate to have
financial stability for many years between the early 1990s (when the new building was built) and 2010. For many of those years, the national economy was booming and so was the health care industry. The hospital received federal and state funding to offset the cost of providing care to everyone regardless of ability to pay, and was being reimbursed more adequately for services provided up front. However, national health care costs began rising precipitously, and in 2010 the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was signed into law as a way to reduce health spending and encourage preventive measures. This brought Medicare funding reductions that coincided with a stagnation of pricing growth, the two-percent annual reduction contained in the 2012 sequester, and numerous other cuts to hospital reimbursements.
Changes in healthcare are happening faster than ever, and they trickled down from fed-eral and state to local levels. The accelerated

changes offer challenges that all hospitals are facing, including rural hospitals. These chal-lenges are altering business-as-usual practices that many organizations, including Holy Cross are grappling with. They include changes in utilization patterns that are driven largely by changes in reimbursement, technology, scien-tific advancement and consumer demands, as well as the shift from fee-for-service to fee-for-value and the transition of patient volume and revenue from inpatient care to ambulatory and outpatient settings.
Ultimately, it all comes down to improving the health of patients and the health of the com-munity, with a priority placed on prevention and wellness. Population health strategies work to improve quality and the patient experience through better coordination of care. Holy Cross and Taos Health Systems have developed some strategies and capabilities for caring for the community outside of hospital walls, including the expansion of services and practices such as the new Primary Care Clinic, with a goal of keeping people from becoming sick enough to be admitted into the hospital in the first place.
We have also made efforts to streamline lo-cal service provision, such as moving Women’s
Health Institute to provide care under the same roof as the Birth Center. The hospital has also expanded outreach programs such as the Taos First Steps Home Visiting Program and the Taos Alive Substance Abuse Prevention.
Although the Affordable Care Act has con-tributed to certain challenges, it does contain numerous provisions aimed at improving com-munity health through direct investments in wellness and prevention at the individual and community levels and by making population health improvement an integral part of efforts to improve the quality and efficiency of health care.
Holy Cross Hospital’s commitment to com-munity health is an essential part of our mis-sion. We have a proud history of investing in community health services and programs. Every three years we are required to conduct a community health needs assessment (CHNA) and adopt an implementation strategy to meet our community’s health needs. We are gearing up for our second CHNA and will be looking for meaningful community engagement among community groups, businesses leaders, educa-tors, and you — the individual members of our community. Your feedback will be vitally important. Please look for our survey and fo-cus group opportunities will be made available within the next few months. For updated infor-mation visit our website, TaosHospital.org.
