    Era of Judges

Judges Shophethim/Shapath means extra ordinary authority

Judg 2:16: The LORD raised up leaders who delivered them

    from these robbers

Book of Joshua ends with an era of peace and tranquility in Israel

but book of Judges begin with an era of violence and crime.

(Compare Josh 24:31 to Judg 2:7-10)

Josh 24:31 Israel worshiped the LORD throughout Joshuaslifetime and as long as the elderly men who outlived him

remained alive. These men had experienced firsthand

everything the LORD had done for Israel

Judge 2: 10 That entire generation passed away; a newgeneration grew up that had not personally experienced the

LORDs presence or seen what he had done for Israel

Mediatorial Kingdom of God- The Judges

    Era of Judges

Key difference between Judges and Kings?

    Characteristics of this period

God chose the Judges ( Judge 2:16) The LORD raised up

    judges

They had authority to judge, lead, deliver and act in unison or

in part with the people for the work of salvation of people from

oppressionJudges were invested with the spirit of the LORD (Judg 3:10)

    Othniel (3:10)

    Gideon (6:34)

    Jephthah (11:29) (questionable character?)

Samson (13:25, 15:24)Sovereign will of God visible in selection of judges as not all of them

were morally clean. Remember our salvation? We were un clean

but God has chosen us as Judges. (1 Cor 6:3 Do you not know that wewill judge angels?

    Era of Judges

Why did Israel forget the blessings of the Lord so soon?

    (Audience?)

Did they really forget? The word never appears in Judges

except Judg 3:7 They forgot the LORD their God.

Mammoth Parental Failure / Reproach to Righteousness of God

Judges 2:7-10 (repeat)Israel did not know the WORD Deut 7:16

Israel did not learn the WORD Deut 31:1-8

Israel did not divide the WORD Deut 7:16

Israel did not pass on the WORD (Judge 2:10)And hence they were a disgrace to God. (Prov 14:34)

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any

    people.

Era of Judges: The four stage moral decay of Israel

    Introduction of Judges

Four stages of moral decay in the times of Judges

    1. Fighting the enemy (Judge 1:1-21)

    2. Sparing the enemy (Judg 1:27-36)3. Imitating the enemy (Judg 2:1-13)

    4. Obeying the enemy (Judg 2:6-23)

Mediatorial Kingdom of God- The Judges

Era of Judges: The four stage moral decay of Israel

    1. Fighting the enemy (Judge 1:1-21)

vs 10 The men of Judah attacked the Canaanites living in Hebron.

Judges began with fighting inspired by the WORD but the book ofJudges ends with the saddest time in the history of Israel

Boundary lines were drawn (Josh 13-22)

Joshua had grown old, part victory and rest of the victory to be

claimed. Josh 13:1 You are very old, and a great deal of land remains

to be conqueredOwned (Josh 13:6) the Land but did not Possess it. What is the

    difference?

We Own Spiritual wealth in Christ but do we Possess them?

Lord was with Judah (vs 1: 19) The LORD was with the men of Judah.

They conquered the hill country But they still failed as they could

not trust in God completely they could not capture lowlands cause

of iron chariots Josh 17:17 had mentioned this exactly!!!

As we fight out enemies, lets remember If God be with us, who can

be against us Rom 8:31 Complete trust in God

Mediatorial Kingdom of God- The Judges

Era of Judges: The four stage moral decay of Israel

    2. Sparing the enemy ( Judg 1:27-36) Israel failed to finish off the enemy which was given on a platter (Josh

    13:6)

Judg 1:21 (Jebusites remained) 1:28 (Canaanites remained) Dan was

    driven off by Amorites(vs 34)

Why did the Israelites spare their enemies? They were not taught the

word of God or they willfully rejected it (Deut 7:16 You must destroy

all the people whom the LORD your God is about to deliver over toyou; you must not pity them or worship their gods, for that will be a

snare to you) This Was supposed to be read and taught to the people

of Israel (Deut 31:1-8) => Dangers of not learning and neglecting the

    word

Exhort you to learn and understand the word of God (2 Tim 2:15)(2 Tim 4:3,4) For there will be a time when people1 will not tolerate

sound teaching. Instead, following their own desires,2 they will

accumulate teachers for themselves, because they have an

insatiable curiosity to hear new things.3 4 And they will turn away

from hearing the truth, but on the other hand they will turn aside

    to myths.

    3. Imitating the enemy ( Judg 2:1-13)

Vs 2:2 but you must not make an agreement with the people

who live in this land. You should tear down the altars where

they worship.1But you have disobeyed me.Israel became friends with their neighbors (vs 12 followed)

Israel became Love their neighbors (vs 12 bowed)

Israel conformed with their neigbors (vs 2 conformed)Lesson for believers:

James 4:4Adulterers, do you not know that friendship with the worldmeans hostility toward God? So whoever decides to be the worlds friend

    makes himself Gods enemy

1 John 2:15- Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone

loves the world, the love of the Father is not in himRom 12:2- Do not be conformed1 to this present world,2 but betransformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may test and approve3

    4. Obeying the enemy ( Judg 2:6-23)

From Imitating the enemy, they started to obey themJudg 2:14 The LORD was furious with Israel and handed them over to

robbers who plundered them. He turned them over to their enemies

who lived around them. They could not withstand their enemies

    attacks.

vs 15: Whenever they went out to fight, the LORD did them harm, just

as he had warned and solemnly vowed he would do. They sufferedgreatly.

Vs 17: But they did not obey their leaders. Instead they prostituted

themselves to other gods and worshiped them

Over time they were slaves and snared to different pagan

nations and their practicesSin will ultimately conquer us if you dont finish itBut in Christ we are Rom 8:37 more than conquerors

Rom 6:14: For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under

    law, but under grace

Mediatorial Kingdom of God- The Judges

Era of Judges: The four lessons from Judges

The book of Judges is by a loving God to his chosen nation (Judge

1:2)The LORD said, The men of Judah should take the lead. Be

sure of this! I am handing the land over to them.

The book of Judges is a spiritual lesson by a loving God to his

chosen people (Church) that we may not sink into anarchy (Judg

    21:25)

Four lessons greater than others1. Know the Word

    2. Learn the Word

    3. Divide/Understand the Word

    4. Pass on the Word to the next generationLooking to the period of Judges (Psalm 106:40-46)

Psalm 106:47 Deliver us, O LORD, our God! Gather us fromamong the nations! Then we will give thanks to your holyname, and boast about your praiseworthy deeds
