REPRESENTATIONS OF

DIFFERENT GROUPS OF

PEOPLE IN THE MAGAZINE

GENDER AND AGE

Page 2: Media Representation

GENDER

Within the magazine gender is represented in a collection of ways. Within the media males are conventionally portrayed as

being more isolated and independent. This is specifically represented on the front cover which portrays a stand alone image

where the person is positioned in a dominant pose. This is therefore representative of males as it shows the person as

dominant and independent. This is accentuated as the image has no background highlighting the point that the person is an

individual.

Another point of mise-en-scene is that the clothing of the female character features glitter which is more suited to the

portrayal of a female character rather than a male character.

The lighting within the image also aids within the representation of gender. Although both use high key lighting the image of

the female character is brighter than the male character. This is a conventional portrayal within the media as it shows the

male character as darker and more mysterious.

Additionally, the language within the magazine shows the difference between the male and female character. The male

character uses language that is more straight forward whereas the female character goes into more detail.

AGE

Age is represented through the images within the

magazine. This can be identified as the images within

the magazine are all representative of the target

audience.

Youth is also shown through the colours in the

magazine which are vibrant and stand-out against the

plain background. The shot type is also

representative of youth as it shows the characters as

quite dominating and a clear-stand out point on the

magazine. The people shown in the images conform to the

stereotypes of teenagers which is portrayed

within the media. This can be specifically seen

within the use of bright colours which shows a

convention for the portrayal of youth in the media.

Additionally the images all feature high key

lighting in order to make the images stand-out

and clear to view.

TYPOGRAPHY LANGUAGE

The typography within the

magazine is also

representative of youth. The

fonts that are used are clear

and the font used within the

masthead shows vibrant

colouring that is eye-catching

and would appeal to a young

audience.

The use of this font is linked to

a college theme which is

straight away associated with

youth.

The language within the magazine is suited

to a young adult audience.

Its language is representative of an older

and more grown up target audience. This is

shown as the wording is more complex

than that found in magazines that appeal to

a younger target audience.

However, in the sections

which aim to provide quick

information the language is

kept simple in order provide

the basic information that the

audience are looking for. This

can be seen in the on the

road to the top section on the

double page spread.
