Survey on Media, Opinions, and Sense of Humor, 2009
Thank you for taking the time to participate in this study. A team of faculty and students is studying ways in which media exposure, opinions toward public issues, and sense of humor are related. On the pages to follow, you will find a questionnaire that will ask you about some of your communication behaviors, attitudes, and habits, and will ask you to report on a variety of preferences toward humorous situations.
Please answer all questions to the best of your ability. You are not being judged in any way by your answers; and as this survey is confidential (indeed, all identifying information will be deleted from your responses), please be as truthful and honest as possible. Your participation is voluntary, and you may choose not to participate or withdraw at any time without penalty. The survey should take about 45 minutes to complete. Please read the instructions at the beginning of each section before answering. There are no foreseeable risks in participating in this survey beyond those of daily living. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Prof. Kim Neuendorf at (216) 687-3994 or Prof. Paul Skalski at (216) 687-5042.
If you have any questions about your rights as a research subject, you can contact Cleveland State University's Institutional Review Board at (216) 687-3630.
Clicking to proceed with the survey indicates your consent to participate under the conditions outlined above.

There are different schools of thought as to why we might find something funny. One current perspective is that there are at least FOUR different ways, and that each person might appreciate humor in just one of these ways, or in two or more ways. We’d like you to think about each type listed below, and see if you can provide an example of how you may have experienced each. This experience could be when you were alone, with friends or family, reading a book or magazine, or attending to some other mass media such as movies, TV, or the Internet.
6. Section E: Types of Humor
E1. One notion of humor is that it relies on a sense of superiority--the disparagement (putdown) of an individual or a group.
Please think of a recent instance when you laughed or found something funny for this reason. Again, the instance could be from your personal life or something you found in the mass media. Please describe.
*
E2. A second perspective on humor says it relies on incongruity--the unexpected juxtaposition (linking) of two or more things that don’t usually go together.
Please relate a recent instance when you laughed or found something funny for this reason.
*

E3. A third way of thinking of humor is that it relies on generalized arousal--reactions to extreme or shocking things.
Please relate a recent instance when you laughed or found something funny for this reason.
*
E4. A fourth possible humor mechanism is that which relies on familiarity and social currency--a sense of connection among people, often through shared knowledge or experience.
Please relate a recent instance when you laughed or found something funny for this reason.
*
E5. Can you think of any type of humor that is not included in the four types indicated above? Please describe:
*
E6. Please relate a recent instance when you laughed or found something funny for this reason.
