Denotation is a translation of a sign to its meaning, precisely to its literal meaning, more or less like dictionaries try to define it. Denotation is sometimes contrasted to connotation, which translates a sign to meanings associated with it. Connotation is an idea or feeling which a word invokes for a person in addition to its literal or primary meaning. Signifier a sign's physical form (such as a sound, printed word, or image) as distinct from its meaning. Signified means a meaning or idea expressed by a sign, as distinct from the physical form in which it is expressed. Media language Semiotics is the study of meaning-making, the study of sign processes and meaningful communication.

Denotation:The image shows all the major actors, and a fight scene between two people, which is clearly going to be a big part of the film.

Connotation:There is lava just beneath the title, showing where the battle will commence, and battleships showing there is a lot of destruction and action in this movie.

Signifier:This character is the biggest part of the poster, and has a scary sort of look to him so we can identify that he is the evil/main character of the story.

Signified:The battle is clearly a big part of the story as it is at the centre of the poster, so maybe everything leads to this battle and this fight decides the end of the movie,

Semiotics:This is clearly an action packed film, as there is battles and spaceships, so this film looks like it is aimed at people who like special effects, and aged 11 and over

• The Hero – Obi wan Kenobi – He is one of the main characters of the story, and he tries to destroy the evil, before it can corrupt everything.

• The Villain – Darth Sidious – He tries to make the false hero and bad guy, and tries to rule the universe.

• The donor – The force – the force is a power that only Jedi's can use, or if someone is trained in the arts of a Jedi.

• The dispatcher – Yoda – A hero who helps others, and tries to defeat the bad guy by helping the main hero of the story.

• The false hero – Anakin Skywalker – The chosen one to destroy the Sith (the bad guys) but ends up becoming the thing he swore to destroy.

• The helper – Yoda – Gives the hero a mission and tries to help him destroy the evil.

• The princess - Padme – The false hero's wife, until she dies because he kills her by accident, but Jedi's cant have a wife/girlfriend as it’s a distraction and against the Jedi code.
