Earthbound Farm started very small, on a 2½-acre backyard garden in 1984. That’s when our

founders landed on an idyllic patch of land in California’s Carmel Valley and decided to farm the

heirloom raspberries organically. Their passion for growing food in harmony with nature fueled the at

times steady and at times meteoric growth of the company, establishing Earthbound Farm as one of

the pioneering, heritage brands that catalyzed the accessibility of organic food.

At Earthbound Farm, 100 percent of our products are certified organic. That means 100 percent of

our farmers grow with cultural and biological practices that promote ecological balance, build healthy

soils, and conserve biodiversity while avoiding the use of prohibited materials, GMOs and irradiation.

Today, as one of the innovators of the organic movement in America, we continue our tradition,

making a bigger, better difference. Why should organic be for the very few? We believe everyone

should be able to make an organic choice, wherever they shop.

From our earliest days as an ‘agripreneurial’ idea and scrappy enterprise based a backyard garden,

to one of the largest organic fresh food brands today, Earthbound Farm is proud to be part of Taylor

Farms, a family-owned third generation produce company based in Salinas, California.

Earthbound Farm’s successful journey serves as a model for hundreds of other farmers and food

manufacturers, that we can protect the planet and serve up fresh and delicious organic food while

achieving business success. Today’s Earthbound Farm is doing what so many naysayers claimed

was impossible: feeding the world with organic food.

35 Years of Organic Integrity 1984 Earthbound Farm is founded by Drew & Myra Goodman in Carmel Valley, California with 2½

acres of heirloom raspberries, which are sold at a roadside stand. Baby salad greens soon followed on the same plot and they built a business selling gourmet organic greens to local chefs.

1986 Move Over Head Lettuce. The revolutionary idea of prewashed salad greens packaged for retail sale was based on their years of prepping salad greens for their personal consumption. When their main customer, a restaurant chef left his role, they decided to see if people would buy these prewashed greens at the grocery store. Earthbound Farm becomes the first company to successfully launch prewashed, packaged salads at retail. Mixed Baby Greens is soon followed by Baby Spinach Salad, Asian Salad Mix, and Baby Romaine Salad, forming the foundation of the baby leaf salad category. Earthbound Farm is credited with catalyzing the popularity of spring mix salads in the US.

1992 Earthbound Farm moves its operation to a 32-acre organic farm in nearby Watsonville with a

9,000-sq.ft. manufacturing facility. Wanting to maintain a close connection to its roots, Earthbound also opens its farm stand and R&D farm in Carmel Valley.

1993 Serious growth begins: major retailers Costco, Lucky stores, Safeway and Albertsons sell Earthbound Farm salad greens.

1995 Farming partners grow the dream: Earthbound Farm partners with Mission Ranches, a group of third-generation farmers in the Salinas Valley. They form a new company named Natural Selection Foods. This translates to 800 acres of additional organic farmland.

1996 Hello San Juan Bautista! Earthbound Farm moves its processing and company headquarters to a facility in San Juan Bautista, Calif. Organic romaine hearts, broccoli, cauliflower and celery join Earthbound’s line of organic salads.

1998 Number One: Now at 5,800 organic acres, Earthbound Farm becomes the largest grower of organic produce in the U.S.

1999 Another Partner Grows the Dream: Tanimura & Antle, one of the world’s largest lettuce growers, joins as a one-third partner in the company. This adds 1,500 acres of prime Salinas Valley farmland to certified organic practices. Organic fruit joins the Earthbound all-star produce lineup.

2002 Organic regulations become federal law and are now regulated by the USDA. Earthbound Farm applauds this victory for the organic industry and consumers, while it enjoys being in business for 18 years.

2003 National as a Brand: with more than 100 certified organic products, Earthbound Farm is now sold in 75 percent of the nation’s supermarkets. Who would have thought!?

Founders Drew and Myra Goodman are awarded Global Green USA’s “Corporate

Environmental Leadership Award.” The “Organic Kitchen” opens in Earthbound Farm’s Carmel Valley Farm Stand, only the third

certified organic kitchen in the U.S., serving organic prepared seasonal meals.

2004 Earthbound Farm receives the “Integrated Pest Management Innovator Award,” from California Dept. of Pesticide Regulations in recognition of its pioneering efforts to manage pests without use of toxic chemicals.

2005 Earthbound Farm earns two More Awards:

• The “California Governor’s Environmental & Economic Leadership Award,” the state’s highest environmental honor.

• The “Fresh Cut Produce Award,” presented by the Int. Fresh Cut Produce Association.

2008 Founders Drew and Myra Goodman are honored by the Organic Trade Association with its “Organic Industry Leadership Award.”

Earthbound Farm becomes part of the WhiteWave Foods family of natural and organic

brands, headquartered in Broomfield, Colo.

2017 Earthbound Farm’s leadership, sales and marketing teams move back home to San Juan Bautista headquarters.

WhiteWave Foods is acquired by Danone whose mantra is “One Planet. One Health.”

2018 New certified organic Salad Blends and Frozen Cauliflower products are launched.

2019 ALL ORGANIC. ALWAYS.

• Earthbound Farm is acquired by Taylor Farms, returning ownership of this organic fresh produce leader to local roots and family ownership.

Did you know USDA Certified Organic is the most regulated and inspected label in food today?

Earthbound Farm joined what was once a movement and is now an industry, early on. We fought

side-by-side with activists, farmers, retailers, manufacturers, academics and environmentalists for a

high-integrity organic standard, one all consumers could trust. We believe we all won, and that

means our environment also wins.

National Organic Program Standards (USDA Certified Organic): • USDA officially launched its National Organic Program (NOP) in 1990 with the passage of

the Organic Foods Production Act.

• NOP standards govern organic certification of farming, handling and processing operations

• NOP created a uniform definition of organic foods with standardized product labeling

guidelines

• Under USDA standards for organic, farms, manufacturers and distributors must be

inspected on location annually by a USDA-accredited certifier

• The detailed USDA standards for organic are more than 500 pages long and may be found

USDA Standards for Organic Certification: • Preserving natural resources and biodiversity

• Only using approved materials

• Not using genetically modified ingredients

• Separating organic food from non-organic food

Product Labeling Requirements: • Products allowed to display the USDA Organic seal:

o “100% Organic”: made entirely with certified organic ingredients

o “Organic”: made with at least 95% certified organic ingredients, with the remaining

5% being restricted to a specific list of allowable non-organic ingredients, mainly

those unavailable organically, such as salt and baking soda.

• Products disallowed from displaying the USDA Organic seal but contain organic ingredients:

o “Made with organic ingredients”: at least 70% organic ingredients may make organic

claim on display panel of product

o Those products containing less than 70% organic ingredients may only include

mention of organic on ingredient listing and not on the packaging panel of the

product

amendments which also reduces soil erosion
