Crystal ClearWhere the water goes in gypsum-bonded investments, and why it matters

by J. tyler teague

For the Latest in Casting Investments, Please See Our Sponsor, Ransom & Randolph (over)

In this Tech Sheet, J. Tyler Teague delves into the material science behind how gypsum-bonded investment sets, and how that chem-istry can affect your casting success. You’ll find an expanded version of this article at MJSA.org.

Gloss Off and Green Strength Explained Gypsum-bonded investments usually contain about 25 to 30 per-cent gypsum (CaSO4) with the remainder comprising some form of silica (cristobalite or quartz) and a small percentage of additives that control the setting time, fluidity, wetting, vacuum rise, and in some cases, the release of respirable silica. When mixed with water, the gypsum dissolves to form a hemihydrate in which each molec-ular compound contains at least 0.5 but fewer than 2 molecules of H2O. As you pour this mix into the flask and vacuum it, the increas-ingly soluble hemihydrate continues to suck up the mixture’s water and morph into the dihydrate form (1 molecule of CaSO4 • 2 mol-ecules of H2O). It keeps on doing so for as long as 1 to 1.5 hours until no free water remains.

During this absorption process, the gypsum dihydrate begins to form crystals in the spaces between the silica particles. (Go figure: more liquid = solid formation.) This process of taking water out of the slurry to form crystals creates the effect we call “gloss off,” which makes it appear as if the investment is drying. The formation of these gypsum crystals locks all the crystal structures into place. In addition, their growth causes the investment to expand (between 0.10 and 0.45 percent) and leads to a compressive force as the mold material is contained by both the metal flask on the outside and the parts on the inside. The combination of lockup and compression creates what is known as “green strength.”

How to Use Water to Your AdvantageI’m telling you about “gloss off” and “green strength” to explain why the mold isn’t dry—all the water remains in the investment. Here’s how you can take advantage of this chemistry to improve mold strength.

• Use a lower water-to-powder ratio; this makes the silica crys-tals settle closer together, so the gypsum crystals don’t need to fill as much space. Typically, I use a 40:100 water-to-powder ratio, but

to increase green strength I might go down to 38 percent water. On the downside, using less water also makes the investment mold less porous, and any gases generated by the metal-mold reaction won’t pass as easily through the mold material. If you’re casting metals with a reactive copper content, such as brass, copper, ster-ling, or rose gold, I would opt for more water (40:100) for greater gas dispersal (particularly if you’re casting heavy pieces).

• Apply hygroscopic expansion, which is more commonly used in the dental industry, although some jewelers apply it as well. I recently saw this used in a small mass-customization factory north-west of Chicago and was given permission to tell others (so I am).

As I said earlier, the dihyrate crys-tal formation uses the water avail-able in the investment; when all the water has been used, the formation stops. But if you gently immerse a just-invested flask under warm water before it has set, hygroscopic expan-sion takes over: The water surround-ing the flask will replace what’s being absorbed by the gypsum transforma-

tion, enabling you to increase the size and number of the gypsum crystals and thus create greatly enhanced green strength. Using warm water (boiling water is way too hot) and keeping the flask in for an hour or so will give you the maximum expansion—up to 4 percent.

Since the water will make contact with the exposed investment only at either end of the flask, this trick works well primarily for small flasks. I imagine that a jeweler using large 4 x 8 perforated flasks might get some benefit, but the water has a long way to travel. However, if there were a permeable wrap that allowed some water to also pass through the perforated sides, without the CaSO4

hemihydrate leaking out—that would be perfect. So to all you read-ers out there: Anyone up for inventing a microporous shrinkwrap that can cover perforated flasks?

During this absorption process, the gypsum dihydrate begins to form crystals in the spaces between the silica particles. (Go figure: more liquid = solid formation.) This process of taking water out of the slurry to form crystals creates the effect we call which makes it appear as if the investment is drying. The formation of these gypsum crystals locks all the crystal structures into place. In addition, their growth causes the investment to expand (between

percent) and leads to a compressive force as the mold material is contained by both the metal flask on the outside and the parts on the inside. The combination of lockup and compression

How to Use Water to Your AdvantageI’m telling you about “gloss off” and “green strength” to explain why

—all the water remains in the investment. Here’s how you can take advantage of this chemistry to improve mold

• Use a lower water-to-powder ratio; this makes the silica crystals settle closer together, so the gypsum crystals don’t need to fill

On the downside, using less water also makes the investment mold less porous, and any gases generated by the metal-mold reaction won’t pass as easily through the mold material. If you’re casting

Ahead of the CurveThree pieces, two sets of hands, one award-winning design

By Ettagale Blauer

W hen a piece of jewelry is designed, its function is pretty straightfor-

ward. Pendants will hang. Earrings might dangle. Bracelets can spin

around a wrist. But what happens when a client wants a piece that

will do multiple things: a gem-encrusted bauble that can hang from her neck

as well as take a spin around her wrist?

This was the challenge posed to Cynthia Reneé Marcusson of Cynthia

Reneé Inc. in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. And considering that her

attempt satisfied her client and claimed victory in the Custom Design

Distinction category of the 2016 MJSA Vision Awards, all would

agree that she more than met that challenge with her versatile,

dual-purpose jewel centered on the combined concept

of a family crest, a mandala, and the traditional

Maltese cross design.

Despite the challenges posed, it was just

another day at the office for Reneé, so to

speak. The client, who lives in southern

California, has been working with Reneé

to create jewelry heirlooms since 2004.

GENERAL INfORMATIONA contract period consists of 12 consecutive months, not a calendar year. The publishing company reserves the right to limit the amount of advertising and to reject any advertising that, in its opinion, does not conform to the standards of the publication. All advertisements are published upon the representa-tion that the agency and/or advertiser are autho-rized to publish the entire contents and subject matter thereof. In consideration of the publisher’s acceptance of such advertisements, the agency and/or advertiser will indemnify and hold the pub-lisher harmless from and against any loss or expense resulting from claims or suits based on the contents or subject matter of such advertisements, including, without limitations, claims or suits for

libel, violation of right of privacy, plagiarism, and copyright infringement. Extra charge for mechani-cal work is not subject to agency commission. Pub-lisher does not assume any liability for error in key numbers. When a contract for advertising at fre-quency rate is cancelled, the advertiser will be billed at the open rate or frequency rate applicable to the quantity of space used.

CANCELLATIONSCancellations and changes in orders must be sub-mitted to publisher in writing. The publisher accepts no liability for verbal cancellations. Orders for all advertising space are non-cancelable 15 days prior to space closing date. Orders for cover pages and guar-anteed positioning pages are non-cancelable. Sup-

plied inserts are non-cancelable the first day of the second month preceding date of issue.

COVERS & GUARANTEED POSITIONINGSubject to availability; rates upon request.

fREqUENCy DISCOUNTS, COMMISSIONS, PAyMENTSAll contracts, insertion orders, and copy are subject to publisher approval. Advertising will be billed at one-time (1x) rate unless a contract has been sub-mitted for a specific frequency rate and time period.

Frequency discounts are determined by the num-ber of insertions over a 12-month period. Contracts canceled before completion will be short-rated at the earned rate. Copy and contract regulations listed in Standard Rate & Data Service apply. Recognized advertising agencies will be given a 15% commission, if paid within 30 days of invoice date.

Payment is due upon receipt of invoice. A finance charge will be added if invoice is not paid in 30 days. First-time advertisers must pay at the time of sub-mission of the insertion order and submit a credit application if they desire credit for future insertions (AAA agencies excluded). Since its incorporation as a trade association in 1903, MJSA has followed the same essential mission: to provide the information and support needed by jewelry makers, designers, and related suppliers to achieve professional excellence and maintain a competitive edge. Our 1,500+ member companies, which employ more than 50,000 skilled

workers, range from high-volume manufacturers to artisans and custom jewelers; from single-person trade shops to global suppliers of tools and equipment. All, however, share a common goal:

To run thriving businesses and to participate in a community dedicated to premier jewelry making and design.

By joining and supporting MJSA, they ensure they do just that.

MJSA provides access to technical, sales, and business expertise unavailable elsewhere. We also offer practical compliance guides so our members can more easily meet federal, state, and industry standards.

In addition, MJSA connects members with their customers. Through our publications, trade shows, and thousands of individual referrals, we connect jewelry makers with providers of tools supplies, and services, as well as with retail customers seeking new finished-jewelry designs and lines.

MJSA also works to ensure a healthy environment for the continued vitality of jewelry making and design. Through our non-profit MJSA Education Foundation, we offer scholarships, seminars, and guides to training and degree programs, to enhance the skills of current workers and develop the next generation of jewelry makers and designers.

For more about the benefits of MJSA membership, please contact us at 1-800-444-MJSA (6572), e-mail [email protected], or visit us at MJSA.org.
