Potomac took the opener 5-3 before Wilmington rallied for a 3-2 triumph in the night cap. TOP OF THE STANDINGS TO YOU: Wilmington has sat atop the Carolina League North standings for most of the 2019 season—74 of the campaign’s first 84 days. The Rocks have not been out of first place in the overall ledger since April 26. SETTING THE TONE: Despite no longer having the trio of first round picks from last year’s draft in Brady Singer, Jackson Kowar (promoted to Double-A) and Daniel Lynch (IL), the starting rotation of the Rocks have been just as dominant thanks to the likes of Daniel Tillo, Marcelo Martinez along with reinforcements with Kris Bubic, Jonathan Bowlan and Austin Cox. Over their last 10 starts, the start- ing rotation has allowed just nine earned runs in 59.2 innings of work, good for an impressive 1.36 ERA during that stretch. DOUBLE THE FUN: Tuesday marked the seventh doubleheader of the season for the Rocks. Wilmington now swept one twinbill, been swept once and has split five times. LOVING THE LONG BALL: Wilmington continues to bring the power when playing on the road this season. Nick Pratto lunched a two-run blast in the fourth inning of Tuesday’s opener. The Rocks now have 29 homers on the season, 24 of which came in games contested outside of the friendly confines of Frawley Stadium. Perhaps not coincidentally, the Blue Crew own the second-best road record in the Carolina League at 26-12. KILLING IT IN CLOSE CONTESTS: The Rocks suffered a rare close loss on Tuesday. Wilmington played its 48th and 49th game of the season that was decided by two runs or less and lost for only the 12th time in those contests. Four of those have been walk-off defeats, including three in the month of June alone. FIRST IMPRESSION: It was quite the Advanced-A debut for game one starter Austin Cox. The lefty allowed just one run on three hits over 5.1 frames in a no-decision. He began this season in Low-A Lexington where he went 5-3 with a sparkling 2.75 ERA. When he was promoted to Wilmington on Sunday, mid-season South Atlantic League All-Star ranked in the top-ten in the league in ERA, strikeouts, innings pitched, batting average against and WHIP. BACK IN THE POSTSEASON: Wilmington clinched its first postseason berth since 2015 with its first-half CL North champion- ship. That year Wilmington won the first half with a 38-32 record. The Rocks won 44 games in 2019 and finished 19 games above .500 in the first half. The Blue Crew clinched their 2019 crown on June 8. The 2015 Blue Crew eventually reached the Mills Cup Championship Series by sweeping Lynchburg in the Northern Di- vision Championship Series. Wilmington is in search of its first Carolina League crown since 1999. HEY NOW, YOU’RE AN ALL STAR: The Blue Rocks had six play- ers named Carolina League All Stars. Pitchers Brady Singer, Dan- iel Lynch, Jackson Kowar, Tyler Zuber and Tad Ratliff along with catcher MJ Melendez all made the team. Ratliff and Zuber picked up successful decisions in the Midsummer showcase at Frederick’s Nymeo Field. Ratliff earned the win while Zuber got the save. Tillo opened 2018 in Lexing- ton and fanned 31 in 41.1 frames before earn- ing his ticket to the First State. The 22-year- old Sioux City, Iowa native was selected in the third round of the 2017 Draft out of Iowa Western Community College. Tillo started his college career at Kentucky before transferring back to his home state. That eventually led him to being taken by the Royals with the 15th pick of the third round (90th overall) in the 2017 Draft. TODAY’S BLUE ROCKS STARTING PITCHER

THE BOOK ON MARCELO MARTINEZ: Marcelo Martinez will make his 12th start and his 13th ap-pearance for the Blue Rocks. The 22-year-old left-hander started his season in Low-A Lexington, making two relief appearances and not allowing a run over nine innings of work. Martinez replaced Nolan Watson in the Wilmington rotation after the righty was placed on the Injured List in mid-April. A native of Reynosa, Mexico, Martinez was signed by the Royals on March 7 of last year. He split his first season of professional baseball between three lev-els. He made one start at Low-A Lexington and pitched twice out of the bullpen for Rookie-Idaho Falls. Martinez spent most of the year at Rookie-Burlington, where he was named Burlington’s Pitcher of The Year.

LAST TIME OUT: Martinez turned in his third consecutive quality start, tossing six scoreless innings while yield-ing just one hit and fanning six.

VERSUS OPPONENT: Martinez is making his third start against Potomac. The lefty allowed just one run on six hit in six frames of a win on May 11 and then lost one week later when he gave up seven runs in just five frames at Pfitzner Stadium.

BEAUTIFUL BURLINGTON RESUME: Martinez loved his time in Burlington. The lefty led the Appalachian League in earned run average (2.68), strikeouts per nine innings pitched (11.2), batting average against (.216) and WHIP (1.00). The efforts earned him Burlington’s Pitcher of the Month award in August and he was also named the team’s Pitcher of the Year after the season. Martinez gave a lot of credit to Burlington pitching coach Carlos Martinez. “He was always helping me with the stuff that I need to improve,” the pitcher said. “(Especially) trying to throw strikes and attack the hitters. That’s one of the things that really helped me most.”

CATCHING UP WITH A FAMILIAR FACE: Martinez grew up in the same Mexican town as former Blue Rocks pitcher Cristian Castillo, who is now on the Winston-Salem staff. The duo played together for six years on a local team and became good friends. When Martinez arrived with the Blue Rocks, Wilmington was in Winston-Salem and the two got to chat. “It’s nice to see him and be able to catch up with him while we were in Winston-Salem. I’ve know him for five-six years and he’s always been very helpful so I look forward to continuing our friendship even though he is with a new organization.

LOOKING TO BE MORE AGGRESSIVE: One of the things Martinez has really stressed since arriving in the Kansas City organization was to be more aggressive, particularly early in the count. The lefty said he enjoys watching Max Scherzer pitch, because he is so good at the exact areas Martinez is looking to improve upon. “He’s aggressive, and like I said, that’s something I am trying to be better at so wathcing him and the way he pitches really helps me,” Martinez says. “He attacks the hitters and I really like that and want to be able to do that. So every chance I have to watch him, I try my best to be in front of a tv or computer.”

LOVE AT FIRST SITE: Martinez says he loved baseball from the first moment he ever played the game. His mom and grandmother took notice of this love early in life and always encouraged him to go play. “They never hesitated when I’d ask if I could go outside or go to the park,” Martinez says. “My freinds (had a big impact on me) but the two biggest (impacts) were my mom and grandmother for sure.”

GROWING UP IN MEXICO: Martinez has fond memories of his childhood. He started playing baseball at the age of four and got plenty of opportunities to show off his talent. “I lived near the border of Texas and it was great growing up down there,” Mar-tinez remembers. “It was a great place. I always liked to play baseball and that’s pretty much what I did. When I got older, I was able to play in the minor league system in Mexico with the team in Monterrey and that helped me have the opportunity to play for the Royals organization. Lots of scouts and lots of chances to be seen.”

Then I went to Lexington starting off really slow there and then kind of catching fire there for a couple months, and then having the opportunity to move up to Wilmington was really really special. Got up here, really had a good time, started playing well with the guys and then I got called into the office unexpectedly and was told that Seuly (Matias) got hurt in Lexington and that I was going to have to go back for the playoffs. Originally I was pretty upset, but I had to look through it with a different lens and just try to change my perspective. That’s one of the biggest lessons I learned last year and in life was that it’s all about what lens you look through. So I took that approach and made the most of my opportunity in Lexington. I went down there and felt like I contributed a lot to the team. I felt like I was a leader on the team, and at the end of the day we were able win a champion-ship, which is what you set out to do at the beginning of every year you play this game.”

Martin said it: (On his goals at the plate)...“I really just want to get on base and keep my on-base percent-age high. I know my teammates will do their job and drive me in. As long as I get on, I can do my job steal second or third, or even if I don’t steal a base, I can get in the pitcher’s head and get him to maybe make a mistake. I know these guys can drive me in from first base...(On his great success at stealing bases)..“We really worked on it at Spring Training. We harp on keying on what certain pitchers do, studying them and the game so it should help me during the season. It was a process that we really embraced last year. The prep means I might notice that a pitcher has a quick pickoff move, but he’s slow to home. So things likethat help me. Stealing bases is what I have to do.” (On player he tries to emulate)...“A guy I look at now is Mookie Betts. He doesn’t strikeout a lot, he can steal bases, he’s not the biggest guy and he plays hard every day.” (On dealing with injuries the past several seasons)...“Three years ago I broke my hammate bone and that was in Spring Training. That was pretty frus-trating because I couldn’t get a chance to go to a full-season club and show what I could do. I overcame thatand then (in 2017), I suffered the face injury when I ran into Gabriel Cancel, our second baseman--which cost me a huge chunk. Then last year it was just nag-ging stuff that started early and just lingered. I was having decent years, but there’s nothing you can do about it but continue to work hard

Melendez said it: (On being a catcher)...I definitely take a lot of pride in catching just because I’m not only catching for myself but also for the pitchers. I have to be able to call a good game, be able to frame pitches that are borderline, be able to block balls. I want my pitchers to have confi-dence in me and trust in me to be able to throw breaking ball with two strikes and know that I’m going to be able to block it. I do think that defense comes first but it’s a bal-ance. I don’t think hitting should be very far behind.” (On his relationship with fellow catching prospect Silberto Rivero)...It’s been amazing working together, we have a great relationship. On and off the field. I think on the field when one of us are struggling a little bit whether it’s with the bat, were able to help each other out, give each other advice. If one of us is doing good in that category, be able to like pick each other back up, and just give each other advice and kind of boost each other’s confidence when we may not have it. And then when we’re both doing well, just trying to piggyback on that and make sure that we can keep that flowing for as long as possible.” (On passing up the chance to play for his Dad at FIU)... “It was definitely a tough decision. I grew up watching my dad’s teams play all my life and have never been to the College World Series Super Regional. So that’s something that I wanted to do. I wanted to go play for him, not only for myself, but also for him. I wanted to bring that bring back the College World Series title to wherever he’s coaching if I knew at that at that particular moment, and so it was definitely a tough decision. But my dad and my family supported me.”

Perkins said it: (On learning how to switch hit)...Our senior year of high school it was our last home game of the year and me and a couple of buddies wanted to do something cool so we went up left handed. I was the first one to go up left-handed and I hit a home run. It was definitely something I wanted to do growing up. When I got drafted, I went to a pre-draft workout for the Nationals and I took a round of batting practice for them left-handed because they saw the video from my high school game my mom took. It kind of just blossomed from there. It was from the ground up though once I continued. First it was a good swing path, making sure I was getting a good swing on the ball. A lot of tee-work, cage work, and then it transitioned to being competitive in the game playing. At first I was happy to just have a good at-bat or putting a good swing on the ball. Now it’s about performing, producing and helping the team win.” (On being traded last season from Washington to Kansas City)...“I don’t want to say shocked, but more so speechless. I didn’t really know what to think and I said, ‘Wow it actually happened to me.’ It’s never sur-prising when somebody gets traded, but at the same

#30 Nick Pratto INF Ht: 6’1 Wt: 195 Age: 20 B/T: L/L Born: Huntington Beach, CA PRONUNCIATION: PRAH-TOE

Notes: Selected in the first round (14th overall pick) of the 2017 Draft out of Huntington Beach High School in California...Baseball America touted him as the best high school hitter in his draft class and he turned down a scholarship at USC to sign for $2.5 million...Won world championships in back-to-back seasons in 2015 and 2016 with USA Baseball’s U18 National Team...First time he wore a Royals uniform was in Little League, and it just happened to be the year he hit the first home run of his life on a pitch he said came in above his eyes... Had a walk-off single with the bases loaded as a 12 year old to defeat Japan 2-1 in the Little League World Series

2019 Notes: - Entered the season as the fifth-ranked prospect in the KC system according to MLB.com- 4-9: Got Rocks’ first walk-off win w/10th inning single vs WS- Slashed .167/.262/.230 w/2HR, 21RBI, 27BB, 8-2B in First Half

2018 Notes: - Played in a career-high 127G for Low-A Lexington- Batted .280 w/14HR 49XBH 62RBI 45BB 22SB- Ranked top six in the South Atlantic League in runs, doubles, hits, total bases, games, XBHs and average- Was named to the South Atlantic League midseason All-Star Game was named the game’s MVP- Named the Frank White Defensive Player of the Year as the organization’s top defensive prospect- Entered the season as the Royals’ top-ranked prospect according to Baseball America

2017 Notes: - Spent the season with Rookie-Surprise - Batted .247 w/4HR 22XBH 34RBI 24BB in 52G - Was named the Surprise Player of the Year- Led the team in homers and RBI and was 2nd in hits

Pratto said it: (On his first year of full-season ball)...I think overall it was a good year offensively. There were some areas I can work on like consistency and cutting down on the strikeouts, but I made progress. The biggest thing was getting used to full-season ball, all the ups and downs you go through. You have to ride the wave. It was a long year, but having guys like MJ [Melendez] and Seuly [Matias]…we all just built off each other. It was a fantastic team.” (On Making a Playoff Run last year in Lexington)...That was my first taste of the playoffs. Obviously, you put expectations in your head, but it lived up to it and was a lot of fun.” (On his defense)...I had to work on my throwing a little bit, on throws to second and to first. I changed my arm slot mid-year, and it really didn’t help me out. So we went back to how I normally do it. Naturally, I’m in a lower slot, a little more sidearm. I’ve always been fine in terms of accuracy, but the infielders were complaining that my throws moved too much [like a two-seam fastball]. But I went back to my normal slot and everything is fine. I think what I’m best at is picking balls in the dirt, and my agility around the bag. Picking balls and saving bad throws is huge.” (On Who He Admires in Game) I really like Joey Votto’s offensive approach at the plate. He has the average, the on-base percentage, the slugging percentage. He doesn’t strike out too much. That’s what I’d like to be.

They follow so close for being so far. I got to go home and spend some time with them this offseason. That was great because I don’t know if I will get back there next winter. I’m going to spend a lot of time in Arizona working (to improve at the) Royals’ facility. It’s tough, but they understand and support me.”

Schultz said it: On living with a host family “I have lived with host families in the past during summer ball. It’s awe-some. What host families do for the players, the behind the scenes stuff that they take care of to make it an easy transi-tion for us, they are the real heroes. On going to UC Riverside “I went to a community college out of high school and at the time, they came and saw me play a few times and I had a few teammates on the team who were committed there so they would come out and watch them play and consequently saw me play and after that, I signed and really enjoyed my time there.” On signing free agent deal with the Royals “It was a dream come true. The fact that they are giving me an opportunity to continue my baseball career is something I will forever be greatful. I want to ride this wave as long as I can.” On playing other positions “I can play third base, but middle infield, espe-cially shortstop is where I played mostly in college. As long as I’m out on the field trying to help the team win, it doesn’t matter where I play. At third base, it’s more of a one-handed position. Sometimes you are playinig for a bunt, other times you don’t have that much reaction time and you have to be ready.” On deciding to want to pursue baseball as a career “I grew up playing the game. “My two older brothers played and my dad played in college and a little bit after that. I’d say it was after high school when I had the opportunity to either pursue baseball or sit back. Due to an elbow injury, I actually took my freshman year off and that really opened my eyes and solidified that I would miss the game. It’s a grind and if you don’t really love the game, it can chew you up and spit you out.” On learning more than just the elbow injury “I actually found out that I have a gluten allergy so now my diet is extremely important to me. I put on muscle, I put on weight and now I’ve never felt better and it’s really been beneficial for me. Person or player he idolized “Although my dad is a Boston Red Sox fan, I’ve always loved watching Derek Jeter. Just the type of guy he is and his work ethic. Dustin Pedroia is an absoulte grinder and a little guy. Then there’s my dad, he’s been there every step of the way baseball wise. My mom as well, she has been the worker of the house, suporting myself and my brothers. My family in general just really have supported me and I can’t thank them enough.”
