The Endicott College field hockey team celebrated its most successful season in program history in 2008, as the Gulls went 18-5 overall while going unbeaten in the regular season (8-0) against The Commonwealth Coast Confer-ence. Endicott played its way into the TCCC Championship game for the seventh time in 11 seasons, but was ultimately defeated in heart-breaking fashion by New England College as the Pilgrims notched their astounding seventh-straight conference crown.

Following the defeat, the Gulls were awarded the top seed in the Eastern College Athletic Conference postseason tourna-ment. Following a 1-0 win over Saint Joseph’s College (Maine), the Gulls moved to the ECAC finals where the Blue and Green defeated Plymouth State, 1-0, to capture the programs second-ever ECAC Championship.

Endicott begins the pursuit of its first-ever conference championship in 2009 under the guidance of third year head coach and 2008 TCCC Coach of the Year Jodi Cipolla. Cipolla enters the 2009 campaign with a 29-12 overall record while also sharing the highest winning percentage in the program’s his-tory at a 70.7%. Laura Blanchard returns for the second year as an assistant coach while recent Endicott graduate and three-time All-TCCC selection Jenny Beech joins the staff as an assistant.

After graduating five seniors––in-cluding four starters––the Gulls will attempt to retool on both offense

and defense. Lone senior Megan McBride (Saugus, Mass.) looks to build off her game-winning goal in the ECAC semifinals while fifth year senior Aisling Mullen (Bev-erly, Mass.) will try to sure up the goaltender position for the second straight season.

The Gulls will be led by three captains in 2009 with two of those leaders being juniors Lindsey Mills (Arlington, Mass.) and Delia McDermott (Shaker Heights, Ohio). Mills was third on the team in points (20), while also finishing third in goals scored (8) last year. McDermott, the veteran defense-man of the squad, looks to steady up a defense that graduated a pair of all-conference honorees from a season ago.

Four other juniors make up the 2009 roster including last year’s second leading scorer Joanne Reid (Clarksville, Md.), who netted 10 goals and handed out five assists. Cara Hanrahan (Franklin, Tenn.) and Caitlin Keating (York, Maine) will see more time on the field as they replace a pair of starters on defense. The pair combined for 13 starts and three goals last season while also playing a major role on the defensive half of the field. Junior Allison Forgues (Auburn, Maine) enters her second season on the team and will compete for a forward position, while Erin McGurgan (Southington, Conn.) battles for a spot on defense after appearing in eight games last year.

TCCC Rookie of the Year Anna Giannoni (Granby, Conn.) is coming off a breakout freshman season

where she led the league with 20 goals including eight game-winners. Giannoni was named the Gulls’ third captain––a rare honor for a sophomore––joining both Mills and McDermott. Fellow sophomore Alexandra Parese (Wilton, Conn.) looks to follow up her strong rookie showing

as she was fourth on the team in points (19) while leading the Gulls with nine assists. The other three returnees for the Gulls include Francesca Cacace (Pembroke, Bermuda), Lauren Atkinson (South-bury, Conn.), and Court-ney Dronsfield (Penfield, N.Y.). All three will enter into tough positional battles at for-ward and midfield in the 2009 preseason to fill the vacant positions left by graduation.

The Gulls will be mak-ing somewhat of a youth

movement as coach Cipolla has brought in 10 freshmen for this year’s squad. Taylor Teixeira (Exeter, N.H.) looks to take over in goal for the Gulls, replacing ECAC Championship MVP Chelsea Defeo (York, Maine) in the cage. Classmates

Cassie DeSimone (Reading, Mass.) and Trista Johnson (Bomoseen, Vt.) will both compete for playing time at midfield in their first seasons. Grace Anne Tornovish (Nantucket, Mass.), Claire Franjola (Washington, Conn.) and Taylor Matties (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) also figure into the midfield position battle.

At forward, Hannah Thornberg (Oakland, Maine), Courtney Lyford (West Kingston, R.I.), Michaela Brotherton (Bartlett, N.H.), and Melissa Enright (York Beach, Maine) will all attempt to work their way into the rotation that saw the Endicott lead the TCCC in offense with 66 goals and a 2.87 goals per game average last season.

Endicott squares-off with a competitive schedule and will look to win their first The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship when the TCCC postseason begins on October 31, 2009.

Jodi CipollaThe 2009 season marks Jodi Cipolla’s third season as the head field hockey coach at Endicott College.

Cipolla began her playing career at Kutztown University where she was a stand-out four-year varsity letter winner and an All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference selec-tion. In her senior season with the Golden Bears, Cipolla was named team captain and team MVP while being voted to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association North/South All-Star team.

Following a brief stint as the assistant field hockey and women’s lacrosse coach at Nichols College, she returned to her Alma Mater to serve as a graduate assistant while obtaining a Masters Degree in higher education administration. Upon returning to Kutztown, Cipolla helped lead the Golden Bears to a 14-6 record after four consecutive losing seasons. The following year, 2005, the Golden Bears broke their single season scoring record as well as boasted the nation’s top ranked defense in all of Division II. In three seasons on the sidelines for Kutztown University, Cipolla helped to compile an impressive 39-22 overall record in the always competitive PSAC.

As the head coach at Endicott College, Cipolla has accumulated a career record of 29-12 and has earned a The Commonwealth Coast Conference Coach of the Year award. In 2008, the Gulls had a record breaking year as the Blue and Green accumulated their highest single season win total (18) and scored the most goals in a season (66). Cipolla’s Gulls have played in a TCCC Final and captured the 2008 ECAC Division III New England Field Hockey title. Cipolla has served as a Head Coach and Site Director for the USFHA Futures program. In December of 2008, she attended the NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy in Denver, Colorado.
