2012-2013 Unfinished Business 104.21

After a (24-4) season and a loss in the Upper State Championship last year, the Cardinals are

looking for revenge. This time, however, they will have to take their anger out on unfamiliar

opponents. This year’s team will take on the challenge of moving up a class to Region I AA. The

team returns a majority of last year’s Region II A Championship team. Daniel Bridges (15.3 ppg,

9.7 rpg) an All Region, All State player and Preseason top 5 2A Senior selection will lead the

charge. Daniel is coming off an incredible junior year. He led the Cardinals in scoring and

rebounding last year. The 6’7 Forward has improved his overall strength and athletic ability

during the offseason and has worked hard to improve his skills on the court. Truston

Whiteside, ( 11.5 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 2.1 apg) a 6’2 senior Guard, also returns and has been working

extremely hard at learning the Point Guard spot. Truston will lead the team on the court as he

takes over the reins of the PG position to fill in for Cole McDowell (Coker College) who

graduated last year. The sharp shooting Mark Wilson (11 ppg, 3.3 rpg) also returns and is

looking for a big senior year. Wilson has improved his mid-range game in the off-season. With

more options than just being a three point assassin, Wilson has become a major problem for his

opponents on the court. Other returning players include Senior TJ Fincher who is one of the

best three point shooters on the team, Omar Whiteside (Sr.), JP Henderson (Sr.), and Aaron

Bryant (Jr.) Bryant started a few games last season and has plenty of primetime playing

experience. Bryant who is also the QB for the football team is one of the most athletic players

on the team. He can play multiple positions and his basketball IQ is very high. The top

newcomers to the team include Trevor Walker (Jr.), Jonah Corn (Jr.), Joey Thomas (Jr.), Austin

Miller (Jr.), Ryan Schulman (Fr.), and Chris Schulman (Sr.). Walker and Corn led the JV squad

last year in scoring. Both are good outside shooters and will look to contribute early and often.

Joey Thomas brings a wide, strong athletic body that specializes in rebounding. Ryan and Chris

Schulman are two transfers from Tampa, Florida. Chris Schulman averaged 15.6 ppg, 1.8 apg,

1.5 rpg , shot 39% 3FG and knocked down a team high 62 three pointer last season for Anclote

High School. Schulman is 5 points away from 1,000 career points in his High School career.

The team was picked to finish 2

nd

in the pre-Season poll behind Carolina High School(2012 Region Champions in the league). With the majority of last year’s team returning and

adding in some new faces, this team is primed for a big run at another Region and State

Championship. Head Coach Lyn Smith believes he has a team that can go the distance. “If we

continue to work hard, play together, and get better every day, the sky is the limit for this

team”. Smith also added, “this could be one exciting season for the whole town of Landrum;

it’s going to be one for the memory books”.
