MEDIA & COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER POSITION DESCRIPTION THE COMPANY Bangarra is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation and one of Australia’s leading performing arts companies. We are widely acclaimed both nationally and around the world for our powerful dancing, distinctive theatrical voice and utterly unique music and design. Led by Artistic Director Stephen Page, we are currently in our 30th year but our dance technique is forged from over 65,000 years of culture, embodied with contemporary movement. The company’s dancers are professionally trained, dynamic artists who represent the pinnacle of Australian dance. Each has a proud Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background, from various locations across the country. Every year, the company premieres a brand-new work at Sydney Opera House, which then tours nationally. 2018 was our most successful season on record: the company performed to over 42,000 people in sell-out shows across Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Brisbane. Our annual program also includes a tour of regional Australia, an international tour to maintain our global reputation for excellence, and a touring roster of education programs, workshops and special projects. We are the only Major Performing Arts Company with its origins in the land. THE MARKETING & DEVELOPMENT TEAM Bangarra Dance Theatre’s compact, collaborative marketing & communications team forms part of the marketing & development team, and drives Bangarra’s marketing, media relations, digital, content, customer relationships, audience research, and merchandising activity. The team is comprised of the Director of Marketing & Development; Customer Relationships Manager; Media & Communications Manager; Marketing Manager. We work in close collaboration with external film-makers, photographers, graphic designers, website developers and a search agency. THE ROLE The Media & Communications Manager reports directly to the Director of Marketing & Development (who in turn reports to the Executive Director). The Manager is responsible for developing communications, digital content, social engagement and media exposure for Bangarra Dance Theatre to support audience development, amplify the company’s brand and reputation, and achieve revenue targets. support to the marketing team, and overall media and communications advice to the whole organisation, including the Artistic Director and Executive Director. Underpinning all Bangarra’s activities are strong and vital relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Elders and communities, which inspire Bangarra’s performances. These relationships are reflected in all company communications and PR. KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY Media Relations 1. Showcase the diversity of Bangarra’s offering, its success stories, and its contribution

across arts, culture, education and philanthropy 2. In collaboration with the Director of Marketing & Development, develop and execute

Bangarra's media relations strategy 3. Manage the media relations budget line of the global marketing budget 4. Develop and foster relationships with journalists, media outlets, and content channels 5. Write media releases and alerts and distribute to the full range of media and content

outlets 6. Collaborate with Bangarra’s touring venues’ media teams 7. Manage media calls, photo opportunities and media attendance at opening nights 8. Lead internal media briefings and coordination of interviews and media collateral 9. Oversee evaluation and reporting on the reach and impact of all media activities 10. Manage and update media lists on Tessitura 11. Oversee media filing, and the creation and distribution of PR reports

Communications 1. Develop and maintain strong relationships with external communications partners and

stakeholders 2. Plan, create and distribute the company’s monthly e-newsletter to the Bangarra mailing

list 3. With the Marketing Manager, evaluate and report on the reach and impact of all

communications 4. Copywriting and proofing, as required by the Director of Marketing & Development

Digital & Social Media 1. Lead Bangarra's social media strategies and guidelines 2. Execute Bangarra's social media plans in collaboration with the Marketing Manager 3. Manage the company’s social media platforms (excluding paid activity): Facebook,

Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn

4. Monitor audience engagement and response to organic activity on the company's social media platforms, providing end-of-campaign reports on key stats and insights using Sprout Social

5. Assist with planning email strategy, and creating and distributing EDM campaigns when the Marketing & Digital Coordinator is on leave

6. In collaboration with the marketing team, foster a culture of continual digital improvement

Content 1. Lead the development of content creation at Bangarra, with a clear strategy of how

content will service the company's marketing tactics, digital advertising, and social media calendar

2. Support the Education Consultant in the development of Education kits and guidelines 3. Oversee the creation of rich content assets for Bangarra's Youth Program 4. Contribute to Bangarra's souvenir programs (1-2 per year) 5. Contribute to Bangarra's Annual Report 6. Contribute to Knowledge Ground, Bangarra’s digital archives project

Marketing & Brand 1. Develop and foster Bangarra influencers (particularly around opening nights) 2. Execute Bangarra's media and brand alignments (i.e. Broadsheet, The Saturday

Paper, City of Melbourne, City of Sydney) to amplify the company's marketing objectives

3. Assist with marketing and digital operations when the Marketing Manager is on leave 4. Deliver niche marketing opportunities in support of brand and revenue goals 5. Actively explore ways to improve your skillset and understanding of the media, content,

marketing and digital landscape, and how they can be contextualised for Bangarra General 1. Attend community nights, opening nights and special events as required 2. Contribute to the logistics of keeping the marketing and PR files up to date on

Bangarra’s internal server 3. Take part in Tessitura project meetings and actively play a part in the continuing

success of the system 4. Provide company images on request 5. Other duties reasonably required by the Director of Marketing & Communications

ATTRIBUTES 1. Strong experience in media and communications in the Australian arts landscape 2. A willingness to discover and work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures

3. BA in Communications or a similar discipline 4. At least two years’ experience leading media campaigns and devising content

strategies 5. Outstanding communication skills 6. Experience of crisis communications 7. Extensive copywriting experience 8. The ability to develop innovative solutions to meet targets and objectives 9. Social media fluent 10. Creative, collaborative and ambitious 11. Knowledge of Tessitura

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS 1. Continue Bangarra’s strong presence on all media, social media and e-comms

channels, reflecting the company’s brand and vision with a direct impact on box office income

2. Steady growth in social media followers 3. Positive, regular and collaborative relationships with key external and internal

stakeholders 4. All work undertaken meets the standards expected and articulated by key internal and

external stakeholders
