COURSE OVERVIEW This Media & Communication HND course is intended to establish skills and knowledge in a range of media as a basis for further study or employment in some aspect of the media and communication industries. The course covers production, theoretical and professional aspects of media study.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO STUDY? This course aims to develop students’ skills in media vocational areas and to develop understanding of issues central to the media industries, their products and their audiences. The course content includes: Contextual studies; Media project; Communication and research; Digital imaging; Video production; Radio production; Film and TV studies; New media

WHY STUDY MEDIA IN BIRMINGHAM? Britain’s second city is simply buzzing with creative energy, and with one of the biggest media communities outside London, the possibilities here are limitless. At the heart of the community lies the Custard Factory, a well-established arts and media centre which houses more than 100 media companies, including young creative companies, galleries, fine artists and independent shops. The city centre is home to the BBC’s major television centre, while just a short drive away at Selly Oak, top BBC dramas such as Dalziel and Pascoe and Doctors are filmed. ITV Central is also located in Birmingham and number of independent production companies have also made their home in here, including Maverick Television (How to Look Good Naked) and North One (Fifth Gear, The Gadget Show).

MODULES STUDIED

The HND Media & Communication course consists of five modules: • Broadcast Production • Publication Production • History and Structure of the Media • Media Texts and Cultural Contexts • Professional Studies The production side introduces and develops skills in television and video production, radio presentation and production, photography, desktop publishing, journalism and multimedia production.

ASSESSMENT

Teaching methods include theory and practical workshop sessions, lectures, seminars and tutorials. Methods of assessment include examination and coursework. The Professional Studies element of the course involves work with media organisations and students have to spend two weeks in a media production business.

FURTHER STUDY

Course graduates have the opportunity to progress onto the second year of the BA (Hons) Media and Communication at Birmingham City University - if you pass all 16 modules and gain Merit grades in at least 12 of them - where the course offers a high level of flexibility, with the choice of nine degrees with eight different specialisms: Journalism, Media Photography, Music Industries, Public Relations, Radio, Television, Web and New Media, Events and Exhibition Industries.

EMPLOYABILITY

Areas of employability after your studies iclude: journalism, press and public relations, video and television production and presentation, radio presentation, publishing, photography and much more.
