COACHING CAPSULES

Rex RyanHead CoachFifth season with the Jets

• Now in his fifth season at the Jets helm, Ryan’s Jets have tal-lied a 42-35 record including postseason play during his ten-ure.

• His team has fielded a top 10 defense in each of his first four seasons as Jets head coach and has never fielded a defense that finished worse than eighth in the league in his time as a head coach or defensive coordinator. Ryan has twice fielded the league’s number one defense and finishing with a top five unit five times.

• His first year, the Jets turned a 5-6 record into a 9-7 playoff berth, earning two postseason victories before finishing one-step shy of the Super Bowl. The following season, the Jets fin-ished 11-5, again advancing to the AFC Championship Game before their season ended.

Ryan’s Ranks

Since being named Defensive Coordinator with the Baltimore Ra-vens in 2005, Rex Ryan’s defenses have always ranked near the top of the league. Combining the Baltimore Ravens defense from 2005-08 to the New York Jets Defense from 2009-12, Ryan has ranked in the top five in the following categories: Total Defense, Rushing Defense, Passing Defense, Scoring Defense, Rushing Average Al-lowed, Passing Yards per Attempt Allowed, Completion Percentage Allowed, Takeaways, Third-Down Percentage Allowed and Total First Downs Allowed.

“There’s a purpose behind everything he was doing. John’s a very deep thinker. He’s trying to play it like chess, like we all do. You can’t just live the moment today, you have to look down the road one — two, three years. That’s the hardest part of being a GM.”

-Mark Dominik, General Manager, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Worked with Idzik in Tampa Bay from 1995-2003)

“He’s going to do what’s best for the club, period. He’s not going to get bullied or pushed around, whether it’s media influence or what-ever.”

“His work ethic was off the charts. When we were in free agency, he pulled all-nighters many times. That’s who he is. Jerry Angelo and I might have at some point said to John, ‘That’s enough,’ but he wouldn’t have it.’’
